Problem

Loading older history rebuilt the entire thread's timeline index for every page. On Linux with Node v26.12.1, the reporter's synthetic 13,000-item workload returned 73 pages and took a median 5,399.7 ms of in-process server time per complete scrollback.

Change

Reuse timeline indexes for the eight most recently paged threads. Validate each cached index against the latest committed event across the thread and its fork ancestors, and invalidate affected entries when projections are applied. The revision query explicitly uses the existing stream index so fork paging does not scan unrelated environment events. History and timeline paging retain their existing contracts and payload hydration.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/20427

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/20427

Verification

  • The regression failed on the test-only baseline with four whole-thread reads over four history pages, expected at most one. Both paging APIs pass on the fix, including fork-source invalidation and a committed-event update that bypasses local projection invalidation. Raw red output.
  • vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/threadHistoryPaging.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadSearch.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadFind.test.ts: 92 passed on the final head. Scoped lint, formatting, and server typecheck passed. Raw test output.
  • Same warm synthetic workload, one warmup and three measured walks, Node v26.12.1: 13,000 items / 73 pages fell from 5,399.7 ms to 535.6 ms median; per-page median fell from 72.93 ms to 6.74 ms. Final 1,000- and 5,000-item walks took 35.7 ms and 210.9 ms. Every final repetition verified exact ordered IDs and uniqueness. Evidence index, commands, scripts and raw results.
  • The fork-revision query was checked with 300,000 newer unrelated events: the indexed query took about 0.0034 ms versus 92.7 ms without the index hint, returning the same maximum. Query benchmark bundle.
  • An authenticated browser-to-dev-server HTTP walk on final head 597cc5ac returned all 13,000 items across 73 successful pages. This is a runtime correctness check; concurrent review/evidence load and transport/parsing make its 3.71-second total unsuitable for a controlled server-time comparison. Runtime transcript, request driver.

Server-only change; the visual fixture matrix is empty. No rendering or provider adapter changes. Packaged desktop/mobile clients and remote/tunnel connections were not exercised. Timings cover warm synthetic in-process paging, not production latency or cold storage. Per-page JavaScript filtering remains, and the cache bounds entry count rather than bytes.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 597cc5a

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused server-side performance fix that reuses bounded timeline indexes during history and timeline paging while preserving existing payload and paging contracts. Regression coverage includes long-thread paging, fork invalidation, and externally committed updates.

Walkthrough

ProjectionStoreV2 now caches timeline indexes for history and timeline page reads. It validates cached indexes against the latest thread-event sequences for the indexed threads. SQL tests cover pagination across 600 items and timeline updates in forked threads.

Changes: Timeline index reuse

History and timeline pages use a cache that checks the latest event sequences across indexed threads, rebuilds stale indexes, and retains up to eight entries. SQL tests check pagination and fork timeline updates.

Paging results remain correct, but switching among many threads can cause avoidable index rebuilds. Refresh cache recency and strengthen the history test; the remaining merge risk is low.

Explanation

The title "fix(server): reuse timeline indexes while paging long threads" matches the main change. The raw summary and objectives both describe caching timeline indexes for the eight most recently paged threads, with invalidation on projection writes and cache validation against the latest committed V2 thread event. The title follows the conventional commit format the template asks for and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template structure. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section gives the reported issue, the reproduction workload, and the measured cost. The Change section explains the cache, the validation against committed events, and the query index use. The Scope section links issue #20427 and a triaged bug. The Verification section lists focused test results, the regression red run, synthetic timings, a query benchmark, and an authenticated HTTP walk, and it states what was not exercised. The template's scope requirement asks for a triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion. The description links a triaged issue through an automated flow, but it does not show a maintainer approval comment. The description's verification and scope content is otherwise thorough, so this is a minor gap rather than a missing section.

Explanation

Issue #20427 requires reducing repeated whole-thread index rebuilds during history and timeline paging. ProjectionStore.ts adds an eight-entry per-thread timeline-index cache, tracks fork source threads, validates cached indexes against the latest committed thread event, and invalidates affected entries during apply. Both paging APIs use the snapshot-aware cache. The PR summary reports regression coverage for multi-page reads, fork-source changes, and committed-event invalidation, plus passing focused tests.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to ProjectionStore.ts and its regression tests. The implementation, cache validation, invalidation, query-index hint, and paging tests directly support issue #20427. No unrelated rendering, provider, client, or transport changes are present in the supplied change summary.

Assert exactly one whole-thread read in the history loop.

isAtMost(..., 1) also passes when the tracer captures no statements. wholeThreadReads counts db.query.text span attributes, so a broken capture yields 0 and the check passes without testing the read count.

On this fresh thread, the first history page builds the timeline index with one unbounded turn-item read. Later pages reuse the cached index because no event is written during paging. The history loop should therefore produce exactly one counted statement. Use strictEqual so that a silent capture failure fails the test.

Keep the timeline assertion unchanged.

Refresh cache recency on a hit.

The cache evicts the oldest Map entry, but a cache hit does not move that entry. After eight other thread indexes are inserted, an actively paged thread can be evicted and rebuild its index on the next page.
