Problem

A thread resumes in an existing managed worktree folder even when cleanup left only node_modules or .next and removed its Git checkout. The next turn runs without the thread's files, and storage cleanup repeatedly fails when it stats the missing .git.

Change

Recover managed folders without .git when their only entries are node_modules and/or .next: remove the leftovers, prune stale Git metadata, and recreate the thread branch before starting the provider. Keep folders containing other files and existing checkouts intact. Storage cleanup treats a missing .git as “Not a linked worktree.”

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24390

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. GitCafe: #24390.

Verification

  • Two focused test files: vp test run src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.test.ts src/storageCleanup.test.ts from apps/server: 158 passed, including after integrating current main. Red log, green log.
  • Server typecheck passed. Targeted lint passed with three existing unused-variable warnings. Two independent reviewers found no blocking defects.
  • Real web dev app on Linux with Codex: created a worktree thread, installed a pnpm dependency, removed everything except node_modules, then sent another message. Before, the provider saw only node_modules. After, it saw .git and tracked files on the original branch. Also verified node_modules plus .next without pruning, an existing checkout, and preservation of unrelated notes.md.

Proof matrix, public reproduction driver, and evidence scope and limitations. Service controls use synthetic provider dependencies; the composer/provider transcripts are the integrated app proof. No rendering changes, so the visual matrix is empty. All clients/providers share this server recovery path. Empty folders and .next alone also recover.

Unverified: actual Windows NTFS junction and locked-directory removal. Linux verification simulates the resulting leftover folders. Dev-server watch restarts interrupted two control turns; both resumed and completed.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 7e369b6

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped server bug fix that restores managed Git worktrees only when their checkout is gone and the directory contains only known leftovers, while preserving unrelated files and existing checkouts. Cleanup now handles missing Git metadata safely, with focused regression tests and no product-default or configuration changes.

Walkthrough

Provider turn startup now detects and recreates certain managed worktree directories that lack .git. Storage cleanup handles missing .git metadata as “not a linked worktree.”

Changes: Managed worktree recovery

Layer / File(s)Summary
Detect and recreate leftover worktrees
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.test.ts
Startup treats a managed directory without .git as a leftover when its only entries are node_modules and/or .next. It removes eligible leftovers before pruning and recreating the worktree. Tests cover eligible directories and a directory containing an additional file.
Handle missing worktree metadata
apps/server/src/storageCleanup.ts, apps/server/src/storageCleanup.test.ts
The linked-worktree check returns “not a linked worktree” when .git is absent. A test verifies cleanup keeps the remaining directory and its node_modules.

Explanation

Issue #24390 requires that a managed worktree path without a valid checkout is recovered: cleared and recreated from the thread branch. The limited case is a folder whose only entries are node_modules and/or .next, with no .git. The change in apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.ts computes a 'leftover' flag. The flag is true when the path exists, is managed, has no .git entry, and every entry is in LEFTOVER_WORKTREE_ENTRIES (node_modules, .next). When the flag is true, the service removes the folder recursively, runs pruneWorktrees, and then calls createWorktree. Missing managed folders keep the previous recreation path. Folders with other entries are not marked leftover and are not removed. Existence and read errors resolve to the conservative outcome. The storage cleanup requirement is met in apps/server/src/storageCleanup.ts. The code checks fs.exists(.git) before fs.stat, so a missing .git returns keep("not a linked worktree") instead of an error. The PR tests described in the summary cover node_modules-only, node_modules plus .next, preservation of a folder with a regular file, and the cleanup case with pruned metadata. I did not read the test files directly. The issue's suggested check for a .git link that is not listed in git worktree list is not implemented. The issue limits the fix to node_modules/.next leftovers, so this gap does not fail the assessment. Windows junction removal through Effect FileSystem.remove is not verified, as the PR description states. The issue's deterministic reproduction does not depend on junction behavior.

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against the merge base changes two source files and their tests. apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.ts adds the leftover-worktree detection, cleanup, prune, and recreate flow for issue #24390. apps/server/src/storageCleanup.ts adds the missing-.git guard for the linked-worktree check, which the same issue requires. The summarized tests in ProviderTurnStartService.test.ts and storageCleanup.test.ts support these two behaviors. No unrelated files, rendering changes, or unrelated refactors appear in the reviewed summary. The raw summary and diff excerpts show no change that lacks a connection to the linked issue.

Require leftover entries to be directories.

If a managed folder has no .git and contains a regular file named node_modules or .next, this name-only check marks it as a leftover. Line 521 then deletes the file and its contents. Check each entry’s type before allowing removal, while retaining support for directory junctions. As per the PR objective, folders with other files must remain intact.
