Problem

Sending a message while Pi compacts its context can reject and lose the message. Reproduced with real Pi 1.4.0 by sending from the web composer during extension-started compaction after a completed turn.

Change

Hold turn-start prompts and steers in the Pi adapter until compaction ends, then deliver them once in order. Retry compaction-specific rejections that race with the start event, preserve settlement ownership, and discard held work when its turn is stopped.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24227 GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24227

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. Changes are confined to the Pi server adapter and its existing tests; no contracts, settings, persisted state, or client render paths change.

Verification

  • Two delivery regressions failed before implementation with expected +0 to equal 1 (red-step report). The final focused run, vp test run packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.test.ts, passed 92/92: execution output.
  • Scoped typecheck passed. Targeted lint reported only two pre-existing unused-variable warnings. Two isolated reviewers found no blocking findings; one independently ran the 92 tests.
  • Real Pi 1.4.0 replay at 588b1c29f0: compaction began at 10:27:58, the app submitted the marker at 10:28:02, Pi recorded compaction at 10:28:31.555 and accepted the marker once at 10:28:31.565. It replied RECEIVED, and the turn completed without resend. Before transcript · After transcript.
  • Reproduction steps, temporary native driver, and evidence index. No reproduction artifacts are committed.
  • Server-only proof matrix: 0 changed render fixtures, audited sufficient. Runtime verification covers detached compaction and one message; FIFO, cancellation, aborted compaction, and rejection races are covered by source review and focused tests.

Illustrative web captures, Chromium 154 on Linux, 1280 × 800, no device emulation. They use different threads and sidebars and make no pixel-diff claim.

Walkthrough

The Pi adapter now holds prompts and steers while native compaction is active. When compaction ends, it sends held requests for active turns and tracks their acknowledgments. Interrupts during native compaction take the Pi termination path.

Changes: Pi compaction prompt handling

Layer / File(s)Summary
Queue and route prompt requests
packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.ts, packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.test.ts
The adapter tracks prompt requests and holds turn-start prompts and steers during compaction. Interrupting during native compaction uses the termination path. Tests cover held requests and interruption.
Release requests and settle turns
packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.ts, packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.test.ts
On compaction end, the adapter sends held requests for active turns. It retries prompts rejected with Pi’s compaction-in-progress error and preserves other rejection failures. Settlement probes account for released prompts and acknowledgments. Tests cover compaction outcomes and delivery.

Possibly related issues

  • pingdotgg/t3code#16846 concerns Pi settlement probes during compaction. This change adjusts settlement probes when it releases held prompts, but the reported no-rearm behavior may remain unresolved.

Possibly related PRs

  • pingdotgg/t3code#24805: Both changes modify Pi turn completion around compaction. This PR handles held prompt release and retries; that PR addresses message-level failures when a continuation recovers the turn.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#17891: That PR establishes Pi prompt acknowledgment ownership and settlement barriers. This change uses the prompt-send path to hold, retry, and release prompts during compaction.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#21597: That PR holds queued Claude messages across failed or unconfirmed compaction. This change covers corresponding prompt-queue behavior in the separate Pi provider path.

A narrowly timed prompt can still fail after compaction and require resending. Make the retry handle that ordering and make the regression test wait for the pump before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(pi): hold messages until compaction ends" states the main change. The adapter now holds turn-start prompts and steers while Pi compacts, then delivers them after compaction_end. The title is specific, follows conventional commit form, and names the affected provider (Pi). It does not list files or use vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section states the bug and reproduction context (Pi 1.4.0, web composer, extension-started compaction). The Change section explains the hold-and-deliver fix. The Scope section links issue #24227 and states that the change stays in the Pi server adapter and its tests. The Verification section gives concrete results: a 92/92 passing test run, a typecheck, lint output, and a runtime replay with timestamps. It also states what was not covered by runtime checks (FIFO, cancellation, aborted compaction, and rejection races were covered by source review and tests only). The scope section cites an automated triage flow rather than a maintainer approval comment, which the template asks for. The template also asks for a model and harness attribution at the end, which the description provides. The description is mostly complete, so it passes. A maintainer may still want the approval comment linked explicitly.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #24227 requires the Pi adapter to hold turn-start prompts and steers during compaction and deliver each active prompt once after compaction_end. The adapter tracks compaction state, queues prompts, restores rejected prompts for compaction-specific races, preserves prompt ownership, and drops held prompts after the turn stops. The focused tests cover detached compaction, in-turn compaction, rejection races, cancellation, and delivery. The reported focused run passed 92/92.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The current head also adds attachment behavior that is not required by issue #24227. adapter.ts imports providerMessageTextWithAttachmentPaths, and adapter.test.ts adds tests for native image bytes, saved paths, and unavailable attachments. These changes do not implement prompt holding, compaction release, rejection retry, or stopped-turn cleanup.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated attachment implementation and its tests from this pull request, or link them to a separate active coding objective.

Wait for the pump to observe compaction_start before startTurn.

fake.emit only queues bytes. It does not wait for the pump to process them. The pump can therefore process startTurn before it sets nativeCompacting. The prompt can be sent immediately, and the test can miss the post-compaction delivery.

🧪 Proposed fix: await a pump-observed event before starting the turn

Retry a compaction rejection that arrives after compaction_end.

Pi reports a rejected prompt from an asynchronous callback. That callback can run after Pi emits compaction_end. In that case, nativeCompacting is already false, so this branch skips the retry and the active turn reaches the terminal failure path.

8Update the compaction-rejection handling in the prompt response callback so it
9recognizes the rejection even after nativeCompacting becomes false. For a
10matching pending prompt and responseTurn, reinsert the prompt into heldPrompts
11while compaction is active; otherwise retry it through sendPrompt, then return
12without reaching the terminal failure path.

Thanks for handling both detached compaction and the prompt-rejection race. One remaining recovery case is a server restart after steerTurn returns during compaction: sendPrompt has only appended to the in-memory heldPrompts, so the steer is reported successful before it is sent to Pi. A second case is unexpected Pi exit while a steer is held: the transport handler finalizes the turn without returning the unsent message for follow-up, and the compaction_end release loop also drops entries whose providerTurnId no longer matches the active turn. These can be exercised by emitting compaction_start, awaiting steerTurn, and then either restarting the server or closing fake Pi stdout before compaction_end, checking that the unsent message remains available for delivery. Could held messages retain a durable pending-delivery state until they are sent, while preserving the intentional cancellation behavior on Stop?
