Problem

preview_open reported “timed out after 660000ms” when Playwright stopped initial navigation after 15000ms. On Linux, opening a page with a controlled 20-second HTTP response delay reproduced the misleading message in 21.780 seconds on current main.

Change

Carry the timeout used by server-browser navigation in the existing operation-error detail. The broker reports a positive integer host timeout capped at its own request budget, and falls back to the request budget when no valid host value is available. Navigation waits and budgets stay unchanged.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24278

GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24278

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. This reuses the existing focused diagnostic fix; no duplicate PR was created. The current title and all issue comments were checked, with no maintainer comment in the preceding 24 hours. No new setting, capability, or persisted state is introduced.

Verification

  • Red on main 27e0c68: preview_open reports its navigation timeout instead of the request budget fails with expected timeoutMs: 15000, actual timeoutMs: 660000.
  • Green: vp test run src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts src/mcp/PreviewAutomationBroker.test.ts from apps/server: 52 tests passed across two files. Scoped lint and server tsc --noEmit passed; only existing Effect suggestions were printed.
  • Independent gpt-6.1-sol and claude-opus-5-5 reviewers found no blocking findings. Proof audit passed.
  • The four changed files tested locally are byte-identical to PR head f722b70, which already includes current main.
RuntimeBeforeAfter
Linux x64, isolated worktree dev server, real server-browser Chromium; fresh tab opening the same controlled 20-second HTTP responsetimed out after 660000ms, elapsed 21.780stimed out after 15000ms, elapsed 15.702s

Both server traces retain page.goto: Timeout 15000ms exceeded. The delay reproduces the navigation timeout mechanism; a cold Vite dependency-optimization run was not separately tested. Two after attempts interrupted by dev-server reloads returned HTTP 503 and were discarded; the stable attempt above supplies the proof.

Server-only diagnostic change: no changed render paths; capture matrix is empty. Web and desktop consume the same MCP diagnostic. No client UI, provider adapter, or wire schema changes. Separate macOS, Windows, and mobile runs were not needed for the Linux server timeout diagnostic. Repro drivers and evidence are uploaded, not committed.

Original implementation: Codex harness, routed model group/deepseek-v4.1-flash, reasoning max. Automated verification: gpt-6.1-sol through Codex and claude-opus-5-5 through T3 Code delegation.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at a135e59

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This focused fix preserves navigation behavior and only carries the actual Playwright timeout through the server and broker so callers receive an accurate diagnostic. It adds a targeted regression test and does not change product defaults, capabilities, or static-analysis configuration.

Walkthrough

Server-browser navigation failures now include timeout context in converted operation errors. The broker uses a valid remote timeout when classifying timeout errors, capped at the request timeout. A test checks that preview_open reports a 15-second navigation timeout.

Changes: Preview timeout reporting

Layer / File(s)Summary
Navigation timeout conversion
apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowserPage.ts, apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts, apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts
toOperationError accepts an optional timeout duration and includes it in converted timeout error details. Initial and explicit navigation failures pass the navigation timeout to the converter. The test checks that preview_open reports a 15,000 ms timeout.
Broker timeout classification
apps/server/src/mcp/PreviewAutomationBroker.ts
The broker reads a positive integer remote timeout and uses the smaller of that value and the request timeout when classifying a remote timeout. Invalid or absent remote values leave the prior context-only behavior unchanged.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(preview): report navigation timeout accurately" matches the main change. The diff makes the surfaced timeout for initial and reopened tab navigation reflect the host navigation timeout (15s) instead of the broker's larger request budget (660000ms). The title is a conventional commit with a clear scope and a specific description. It is 50 characters, within a normal length.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #24278 is the only directly linked issue. Its coding requirement is that preview_open report the host navigation timeout, or include the host message, instead of the broker's 660000ms request budget. The whole-PR summary shows that ServerBrowserPage.toOperationError now attaches { timeoutMs } to initial and explicit navigation timeouts, and that the broker classifies remote PreviewAutomationTimeoutError details with the remote timeoutMs. The reviewed head file apps/server/src/mcp/PreviewAutomationBroker.ts confirms readRemoteTimeoutMs accepts only positive integers and that the timeout error uses Math.min(context.timeoutMs, remoteTimeoutMs). The regression test in apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts covers the new-tab page.goto timeout and expects timeoutMs 15000 with the 15000ms message. The issue's alternative suggestions (a caller timeoutMs or a longer wait) are optional directions, not required criteria. The PR description states that navigation timing is unchanged. Limits: the text diff tool was unavailable for the changed blobs, so the ServerBrowser and test changes rely on the supplied whole-PR summary. The test run was not repeated.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR summary lists changes in four files: PreviewAutomationBroker.ts, ServerBrowser.ts, ServerBrowserPage.ts, and ServerBrowser.test.ts. All changes concern timeout detail propagation for navigation failures, broker timeout classification, and the matching regression test. These changes support issue #24278. The PR description's branch-status and model notes are not code changes. No unrelated implementation or test changes are identified. The incremental change from the previous reviewed head a135e59 to 76d14e2 was not separately diffed because the diff tool was unavailable. The whole-PR evidence and the head broker file show no unrelated change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the required template sections (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification). It states the bug clearly: preview_open reports 660000ms when Playwright stops initial navigation after 15000ms. It explains the change: the operation-error detail carries the navigation timeout, and the broker caps it at its request budget with a fallback. It links the issue (#24278) and says it came through the triaged automated flow. Verification is specific: a red-then-green regression test, a focused vp test run with 52 passing tests, lint and tsc results, and a before/after runtime table on Linux with timings. It also notes what was not checked: macOS, Windows, mobile, cold Vite runs, and ServerBrowserPage.test.ts. The Scope section cites the template's exemption for a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug. The template asks for an explicit maintainer approval link, but the author says no maintainer comment exists in the preceding 24 hours, so approval is not established by a link. That gap is minor and does not block the description, so the check passes.

The earlier host-registration finding is addressed at f722b70: the new regression test awaits the shared ready helper, which completes a successful broker round-trip before invoking the failing navigation. Both independent reviewers verified this path; the two focused suites pass 52/52. The before/after real-server runtime transcripts are now in Verification.
