When T3 Code compacted a thread, the timeline showed a /compact user bubble, a "Working for Ns" row and a live "Compacting context" divider: two bars for one action. The automatic compaction before cache expiry also sent a Done notification on every idle thread.

What changed

  • One status, never two. The /compact bubble is gone. When you send to an idle thread, the compaction holds your message back, so the working row says why: "Compacting after being idle…". Every other compaction shows only its live divider ("Compacting before the cache expires…", "Compacting context"), with no working row above it. When the compaction finishes, the divider leads with why: "Context automatically compacted before cache expiry 252K → 18.3K tokens" or "Context compacted after being idle …".
  • Provider compactions are unchanged. When Claude compacts on its own in the middle of a turn, the live divider stays, because by then the working row is usually off screen.
  • Why it compacted. The /compact T3 Code sends now carries idleCompaction: "onReturn" from the composer when you send to an idle thread, "beforeCacheExpires" from the server's idle timer. It travels through message.dispatch, the message and the user turn item to both clients. Messages from older servers fall back to the agent/server origin.
  • Background compactions stay out of lists and notifications. The thread shell (SQL and in-memory paths) skips runs whose prompt is one of those /compacts, along with the prompt itself, unless the compaction fails. The sidebar, inbox and mobile list never flip the thread to Working or move it, there is no Done notification, the relay (mobile Done alerts and Live Activity) stays quiet, and auto-settle timing is untouched. Failures still surface, and a /compact you type behaves like any turn. The open thread still shows the compaction, because it reads the full projection.
  • Claude's resume question. When Claude asks "Compact it before continuing?" and you choose to compact, the answered question folds into the compaction row ("Context compacted after 1h 12m idle …").
  • Mobile. Mobile gets the same folding and notes. It has no "Working for" row, so it keeps a single compaction divider.

Evidence

The recordings are real Claude turns on a dev server. To avoid waiting an hour, the idle thresholds were shortened for recording only (1 minute for case 1; for case 2, 15 seconds after the turn and no context minimum). That patch is not part of this PR.

Case 1: sending a message to a thread that has gone idle

Case 2: automatic compaction before the cache expires

A turn finishes, then T3 Code compacts the thread on its own.

Sidebar check (live, case 2): sampling the sidebar row every 250 ms, the user's turn showed "Working 0s → 1s", then during the automatic compaction (18.5–24.8 s) the row stayed "now" with no Working state and no position change, while the timeline showed the live divider.

Case 4: a /compact that fails

Claude Code echoes /compact's stdout ("Not enough messages to compact.") as a synthetic assistant message and as the result text. The adapter now drops both for /compact turns. The reason goes on the failed compaction item's summary, and the divider shows it in the error style.

Tests

  • ProjectionStore.test.ts: a running idle compaction (server or on return) is not the shell's latest, active or activity run and its prompt is not the latest user message, in both shell paths; a typed /compact and an ordinary prompt are; a failed idle compaction surfaces.
  • agentAwareness.test.ts: a silent run stays quiet unless it fails.
  • ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts: a failed /compact carries its reason on the compaction item, whether Claude reports it with compact_error or only as the result text, and no /compact turn emits a reply.
  • MessagesTimeline.logic.test.ts: compacting on return is the working row alone; automatic and typed compactions are their live divider alone; an answered resume question folds into its compaction.

Not run: mobile in a simulator.

Rebuilt on the original branch, preserving the contributor history and merging main. Removed redundant timeline state; fixed pending mobile controls, runless/retry rows, item-scoped resume reasons, collapsed dividers, and the item/run completion transition. Product decisions: successful automatic compactions stay quiet; typed compactions and failures notify. Web/desktop use the working row only when compacting on return and one live divider otherwise; mobile uses one divider. Both new wire fields remain optional. Julius approval remains required for this feature; this PR is not merged.

Evidence

The original evidence above is historical. The takeover matrix below uses the real web dev app, isolated synthetic state, an offline gated provider, and unmodified compaction paths; no live provider account. [9c717508] versus [27e0c684]: manual, idle-on-return, pre-expiry, and provider mid-turn; running/finished; light/dark; 1440/390 CSS viewports. The final main merge changes only upstream analytics; web, mobile, orchestration, contracts, shared, and client-runtime Git tree hashes match this captured head exactly. The head fixture also holds a completed compaction item while its run is still running, and includes a reconnect control. [Full fixture matrix and verification artifacts] — 64 stills, 32 sampled transition clips, 32 paired diffs; independent final evidence audit: PASS. Before and after: automatic pre-expiry compaction at 390px Before and after: finished pre-expiry compaction at 390px Running to finished transition. Clips contain eight real timestamped preview frames, without interpolation, plus a one-second final hold. Preview output scaling and dynamic layout differences are documented in the archive.

Verification log
  • HEAD: 7ab6cddc; refreshed main is an ancestor (merged by commit, never rebased).
  • Initial focused client/shared baseline: 119 → 123 passing; regression reverts failed as expected. Final merged head: 206 focused tests, 19 Chromium browser tests, and 16 upstream analytics tests passed. The full projection suite (42) and compaction-filtered server run (21, overlapping) were already green.
  • Scoped lint, formatting, diff checks, and web/mobile/server/contracts/shared/client-runtime typechecks passed. Browser execution: both changed files explicitly ran under the web browser project, 19 passed.
  • Two fresh full-diff reviewers returned MERGE on final merge head 7ab6cddc (round 7). Earlier rounds fixed mobile pending attachments, runless ownership, retry IDs, and resume reason ownership. Historical bot and visual audits additionally exposed collapsed dividers and the transient duplicate row; both now have failing-before regressions.
  • Steering objections were withdrawn: command policy queues work behind maintenance, and the orchestrator rejects steering into a maintenance run. The accessible reason and SQL text/attachment parity findings are addressed. All seven historical inline findings were rechecked.
  • Optional fields decode older payloads; old/new peer round-trips passed. Mobile reconstructs reasons per compaction item and keeps pending controls/attachments.
  • Unverified: native mobile simulator, Electron shell, real providers, relay/tunnel, OS notification delivery, native resume-question and failure/no-token visuals. Notification and fallback behavior are covered by focused tests.
  • Evidence is external only; no fixture, screenshot, recording, or scratch artifact is committed.
