Problem

Reduce repeated SQLite writes from provider snapshots reported in #24003. Current ingestion commits delivered snapshots individually, stable upserts rewrite unchanged index entries, and large-index event inserts spill statement journals.

Change

Persist already-queued root-run snapshots in order, capped at 32 events and 1 MiB of normalized JSON; oversized events commit alone. Controls and source pauses flush pending work under the existing thread command lock so Stop cannot overtake it. Singletons avoid a duplicate schema encode.

Guarded projection updates preserve the upsert for inserts/key changes. Single-row INSERT OR FAIL avoids redundant statement journals while EventSink retains whole-batch rollback; duplicate rejection and sequence preservation are tested. Stale/equal visits keep their receipts and emit no snapshot. Durability settings, checkpoint policy and wire contracts are unchanged.

Scope and approval

Server persistence work for #24003. Maintainer approval of this implementation has not been recorded. Compact advancing visits remain covered by the existing #21778.

Verification

Linux aarch64 VM, COW btrfs, Node 26.12.1, SQLite 3.54.0. The large fixture has 1,288,000 historical events in a 22.01 GB database; real SQLite reader/checkpoint workers remain enabled.

WorkloadProcess write_bytes before → afterReduction
Four runs, 2,400 snapshots over five minutes269.4 → 183.5 MB31.9%
Same data, available groups of eight282.0 → 45.6 MB83.8%
Full server HTTP/WebSocket, 2,000 visit commands294.8 → 93.8 MB68.2%

Snapshot comparisons have identical stored-event and projection hashes. The visit comparison preserves all 2,000 receipts and four watermarks. A controlled insert diagnostic reduced temporary writes from 1,193,100 bytes to zero with identical events/projections.

vp run check:changed passes, including 290 adjacent tests; 88 provider/restart replay cases pass. Process termination inside/after commit and a torn final WAL frame preserve transaction boundaries. Those databases and the final 22 GB database pass integrity_check.

Reproduction scripts, counters, hashes, syscall/checkpoint breakdown and limits.

The paced process-I/O ratio was 115.1× → 78.4×; this does not reproduce the reporter's exact 125–155×. The large fixture uses controlled provider events; the full-server case exercises visits. Direct NVMe writes and actual power interruption remain unmeasured; process-death/torn-WAL fault tests are documented separately.

Important

Batching consumes only events already available, adding no timer window. Singleton commits remain immediate, so savings depend on actual queue depth.

📝 Walkthrough

Provider-event ingestion now batches root-thread snapshots, and queued subscriptions emit event chunks. Projection updates, thread visit dispatch, and event insertion also have updated matching and failure-handling behavior.

Changes: Streaming event processing

Layer / File(s)Summary
Queued event subscription chunks
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderSessionManager.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderSessionManager.test.ts
Queued signals are processed in chunks. Events collected before a failure signal are emitted before the failure propagates. Tests cover normal and failing stream completion.

Consecutive root-thread snapshots are buffered and processed under the thread command lock. Batches flush at 32 events or 1 MiB, before other ingestion, and when processing exits. Tests cover ordering, limits, concurrent Stop, cancellation, source pauses, and normalization failure.
Guarded projection updates

Node, message, and turn-item handlers update mutable fields when indexed values match. If no row matches, each handler uses the existing insert-on-conflict path. SQLite tests cover WAL writes and stored-row equivalence across key and lifecycle changes.

Thread visit timestamps

Layer / File(s)Summary
Visit timestamp dispatch
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/runtimeLayer.test.ts
Dispatch emits no event when a visit timestamp is stale or equal to the stored timestamp. Forward visits use the newer timestamp, and tests verify stale and equal visits store no events.

Event persistence failure handling

Event insertion and rollback
apps/server/src/persistence/OrchestrationEventStore.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/OrchestrationEventStore.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/FoundationPersistence.test.ts
Agent event insertion uses INSERT OR FAIL. Tests check duplicate-ID rejection, sequence continuity, replay contents, and rollback when event insertion fails.

1310-1310: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Skip the size encode for a single-event snapshot group.

bufferSnapshot runs encodeSnapshot (schema encode plus JSON stringify) on every buffered event, but only to compute bytes for the 1 MiB flush checks. When a group holds one raw snapshot that normalizes to one event, the pending batch is empty on entry. The byte count can then trigger only an inline flush of an event of 1 MiB or more. Otherwise the event waits for the group's exit flush. That flush runs under the same thread lock, so the stored events, their order, and the lock scope do not change.

Persistence encodes the same event again with OrchestrationV2DomainEventJson in appendAgentEvents. Schema validation and the stored payload shape therefore do not depend on the skipped encode. One difference remains: a schema encode failure for such an event now surfaces during the group's exit flush, not inside bufferSnapshot.

The group-size check must also require events.length === 1. A single snapshot that normalizes to several events still needs byte accounting.

Addressed CodeRabbit’s singleton-encoding finding in 9201840474.

The size encode is skipped only when one raw snapshot normalizes to exactly one event. Canonical persistence validation and the thread-lock scope remain intact. A new case checks that one snapshot producing multiple large events still respects the byte limit; removing the normalized-event count guard makes that test fail.

The PR also now includes Linux/btrfs process-I/O measurements with a 22 GB disposable database, production SQLite checkpointing, full-server HTTP/WebSocket traffic, and process-death/torn-WAL recovery evidence.

Note

Claude Opus 5.5 (Claude Code) reviewing on behalf of Simas, who reported #24003.

Thanks for the careful work and the thorough measurements. I reviewed 9201840 and found no correctness problems:

  • Thread lock. The thread command lock on buffered ingestion can't deadlock with Stop or turn start:
    • Stop queues provider-turn.interrupt as an outbox effect.
    • Turn start runs from the effect worker without the lock.
    • The code under the lock only updates in-memory state.
  • Buffered writes. The buffered path writes with the same options as ingestNormalized for these event types.
  • Projection UPDATEs. The guarded UPDATEs match every index on those tables, including the partial ones.
  • INSERT OR FAIL. This is safe: each statement inserts one row, EventSink rolls back the whole batch, and no caller catches the error and carries on.

On impact, I measured a live workload (details in #24003):

  • Commits arrive one event at a time: 4/s across 3 threads, ~31 WAL pages each.
  • About 95% of those pages are index and B-tree bookkeeping.

So queued-snapshot batching rarely applies, which matches your live trace (−17.8% WAL). The projection-index guard and INSERT OR FAIL do target real costs.

Larger levers, if maintainers want them:

  • touch fewer event-table indexes per insert;
  • avoid rewriting the projection metadata row on every commit;
  • group commits across threads in EventSink rather than per run. This would also keep provider ingestion off the thread command lock.
