Problem

When a preview tab's renderer dies while an agent screenshot of it is still in progress, the whole desktop app segfaults and takes the bundled server down with it (#24026). The bug is in Chromium below 157 (crbug.com/567321049, fixed upstream in f49f3e5). No stable Electron has that fix yet, including 44.9.3 on main and 45.0.0.

Overlapping screenshots make the crash much likelier, and the app produces them on a stalled tab: when a snapshot times out, its Page.captureScreenshot stays pending inside Chromium (CDP commands can't be cancelled), and every retry adds another.

Fix

The desktop CDP relay (DesktopBrowserHost) now sends a guest one Page.captureScreenshot at a time. Later ones wait their turn. The relay lets the queue move on when the guest loads a new document, because a screenshot still pending at a reload or navigation can stay unanswered. Without that, one stuck screenshot could block that tab's screenshots for good. A screenshot queued by a relay the server has since released (or a detached tab) is dropped unsent. Each screenshot still goes out as the same CDP command with the same parameters.

This narrows the crash; it does not remove it. A single screenshot copy in flight at the moment the renderer dies can still crash Chromium 152. The full fix is an Electron release with Chromium 157+ (or a backport of f49f3e5), which is why this says Refs rather than Closes.

Evidence

Reproduced on corex (Linux, Electron 44.9.3, the version on main) with a harness that loads this branch's real DesktopBrowserHost.ts into Electron. It feeds the relay CDP command lines the way the server does, keeps up to 4 agent screenshots outstanding on a <webview> guest (like timed-out snapshots plus retries), then SIGKILLs the guest renderer, the way the out-of-memory kill in the report did. Symbolicated with Electron's published v44.9.3 symbols, main's crash is the same frame as the report: RenderWidgetHostImpl::OnSnapshotFromSurfaceReceived called from RenderWidgetHostViewChildFrame::CopyFromSurface.

renderer killsapp crashes
main329 (about 28%); every run crashed by round 8
this branch77420 (about 2.6%)

Both rows add up runs alone and runs with up to 8 harnesses at once. The rate on the branch climbs with machine load: with 8 at once, most runs crashed at least once.

Native checks of the queue release on the same build: a screenshot left pending by a reload, or by a crash followed by a reload, doesn't block the next one. The recordings below come from the first commit; the second commit only changes what happens to screenshots queued by a released relay or a detached tab, which this harness doesn't do mid-round.

Before (main): the app process dies at round 7 of 30.

before

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/1183af5d-071a-4584-a483-33144f427446

After (this branch): all 15 rounds finish and the app keeps running.

after

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/84ed54cd-5f88-41fd-ae32-b6293ab97980

Tests: DesktopBrowserHost.test.ts adds three cases, each failing without its part of the change: a second screenshot waits for the first; a navigation lets one waiting screenshot go, and the superseded one answering late doesn't start another; screenshots a released relay left queued are never sent. vp run check:changed passes.

Not covered: macOS (where the report came from) and the packaged app. The Chromium code path is shared across platforms.

Thanks @Batuhan1999 for the root-cause write-up in #24026. This is the "one pending screenshot per tab" direction proposed there.

Queued Page.captureScreenshot requests from a released relay still execute and occupy the per-tab serialization queue, delaying screenshots requested by the new relay; their replies are then discarded because the relay is no longer current. Reject or remove queued captures when their relay is released or replaced, while allowing the in-flight capture to finish.

[Opus 5.5][Claude Code] on behalf of shivam.

Fixed in 31543c321e. When a queued screenshot reaches its turn and the relay that asked for it has been released, it is rejected without being sent and the next one goes. Detaching a tab clears its relay too, so its queue empties the same way. A screenshot already sent keeps its turn until it finishes. The new test "drops screenshots a released relay left waiting" covers it and fails on the previous commit.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at bbc1e49

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized desktop bug fix that serializes preview screenshots and handles navigation or relay invalidation to reduce renderer-crash exposure. The production change is bounded to the preview host and is accompanied by targeted tests for the new queue behavior.

DesktopBrowserHost serializes screenshot captures per attached tab. Navigation advances an active screenshot turn. Detach clears the relay reference. Tests cover command ordering, navigation, late replies, and relay release.

Changes: Screenshot sequencing

Layer / File(s)Summary
Serialize screenshot captures
apps/desktop/src/preview/DesktopBrowserHost.ts, apps/desktop/src/preview/DesktopBrowserHost.test.ts
Attached tabs track an active screenshot turn and a queue. Page.captureScreenshot uses this sequencing logic, while other commands retain their existing dispatch. Tests verify that a non-screenshot command proceeds while a screenshot waits, and that the next screenshot starts after the active capture replies.
Update queue on navigation and release
apps/desktop/src/preview/DesktopBrowserHost.ts, apps/desktop/src/preview/DesktopBrowserHost.test.ts
The host registers and removes a did-navigate listener. Navigation advances an active screenshot turn. Tests cover a late reply after navigation and verify that a released relay's waiting screenshot is dropped.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Discard queued screenshots when their relay ends.

release, detach, and announceAll leave queued callbacks executable after clearing the relay. nextScreenshot can later start those callbacks before a new relay’s capture. This causes unnecessary CDP capture work and can delay the live request. It does not establish a crash or availability failure. Reject waiting requests in all three lifecycle paths, but keep the active screenshot turn until it settles or navigation releases it.

✅ Addressed in commit 31543c3

[Opus 5.5][Claude Code] on behalf of shivam.

This is handled lazily rather than eagerly. All three paths (release, announceAll, detach) set tab.relay = null. When a queued entry reaches its turn, start sees tab.relay !== relay, rejects without calling capture, and calls nextScreenshot in the same tick. So a stale entry sends no CDP command and doesn't delay the live relay's screenshot. The active turn is untouched, as you suggest. The test "drops screenshots a released relay left waiting" checks that only the live relay's screenshot is sent. Rejecting eagerly would only free the stale closures a little sooner; their relay is gone, so nothing is waiting on them.

@shivamhwp You're right. In the supplied code, start checks tab.relay !== relay before calling capture. A stale entry rejects and advances the queue synchronously, without sending a CDP command. The lifecycle paths also leave the active screenshot turn intact.

My finding overlooked that guard. Eager rejection is not needed to prevent the stale captures I described. I withdraw the finding.

recoverDetachedControlSession releases the relay and then restores it for the same WebContents. Keep the active screenshot state associated with the WebContents across reattachment, while still dropping queued requests from the released relay.

[Opus 5.5][Claude Code] on behalf of shivam.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comment on reattachment (DesktopBrowserHost.ts:192): leaving this as is. recoverDetachedControlSession only runs after Chromium closes the debugger session on its own, and when a session closes, Electron rejects every command still pending on it ("target closed while handling command"). So the old screenshot's promise settles at detach, and its turn would end there even if the queue state followed the WebContents across reattachment. Covering a capture Chromium is still finishing after its session closed would take a time-based hold. That path is rare (Chromium dropping the session), and this PR is a mitigation rather than a full fix; the full fix is Chromium 157+.
