Read-only projection and persistence queries could queue behind the server's single SQLite writer connection, delaying message sync. The trace showed the waiting query but not which operation held the connection.

Route independent reads through the reader worker, including isNodeStored, shell snapshots, event replay, auth lookups, and scheduled task lookups. Reads inside an existing write transaction still use its writer connection. Full getThreadProjection reads stay on the writer: routing this method to the reader caused repeatable CI timeouts in restart replay tests, while the same shard passed after restoring its original route. A separate first commit records the writer connection owner at the start of a wait in the waiting query's trace.

The mixed read/write audit found that conditional claims, ordinal allocation, dedupe, and guarded updates depend on atomic SQL or transaction state. Splitting those reads would add races or require another writer-side recheck. The legacy transcript lookup already uses a separate read, so this branch routes it to the reader.

vp run check:changed passed, including 349 tests across 15 files. The full CI suite passed on the latest commit. A file-backed test confirms shell snapshots complete while the writer connection is occupied.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

Selected server-side SQLite reads now use NodeSqliteClient.readOnly. The SQLite client also tracks writer ownership and records available owner details on acquisition spans. Tests cover reader routing, shell snapshot access during a writer transaction, and ownership annotations.

Changes: SQLite read routing and writer ownership

Layer / File(s)Summary
Writer ownership and span annotations
packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.ts, packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.test.ts
The client tracks active writer ownership by fiber and enclosing span. Acquired spans record available owner identifiers. Tests check the annotations.
Orchestration persistence reads
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/*, apps/server/src/persistence/Orchestration*
Selected outbox, project, projection, snapshot, legacy import, receipt, and event-store reads use NodeSqliteClient.readOnly. Persistence tests check reader use and snapshot retrieval while a writer transaction is open.
Other server reads
apps/server/src/mcpApps/*, apps/server/src/persistence/*, apps/server/src/pullRequest/*, apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/*, apps/server/src/serverSettings.ts, apps/server/src/storageCleanup.ts, apps/server/src/workspace/*
Selected authentication, provider-session, pull-request, scheduled-task, settings, cleanup, workspace, and model-context queries use the read-only client. Existing query and result handling remain in place.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval β€” This PR broadly reroutes production SQLite reads to a separate reader connection and changes shared connection-acquisition instrumentation across orchestration, scheduling, persistence, and authentication paths. Because the behavior spans many existing request paths and shared concurrency infrastructure, its runtime impact warrants human review.

Remove the local snapshot timeout.

If reader routing regresses, getShellSnapshot() waits for the held writer. In it.effect, the TestClock does not advance this two-second Effect.timeoutOption, so the assertion cannot report the timeout as intended. Assert that the snapshot completes while the writer remains held, and rely on the project timeout for a stalled test. As per coding guidelines, β€œThe project timeout is the ceiling” and β€œit.effect runs on a TestClock; Effect.sleep only advances through TestClock.adjust.”
