feat(pi): show extension status in existing controls#23901

Pi extensions can publish status text that T3 currently discards. Keep keyed status in the provider session and show it through existing composer banners on web and desktop and the floating control on mobile. Updates replace their key, clears remove it, and idle status does not say "Working."

Statuses survive reusable turn failures and clear when the runtime retires. Metadata updates preserve the idle-release deadline and avoid unnecessary worktree cleanup sweeps. Startup recovery clears retained status from attached dead sessions without restoring detached errors, and the Android informational dialog scrolls long text.

Related: #16045 and #16046. #16061 adds a plugin API on that stack; this PR covers native Pi statuses.

Validation: check:changed passed 395 tests and 29 affected package typechecks. Pi 1.4 and isolated web verification cover keyed updates, clears, reconnect persistence, reusable-error retention, updates while failed and runtime retirement. The controls are unchanged by the final server corrections, which were verified through service probes and tests. Service probes preserve the live session snapshot on reuse and keep detached errors from resurfacing through persisted client replay. Mobile UI and Android scrolling were checked from source and types only; neither iOS nor Android was run or captured.

Pi RPC cannot identify late status updates from old extension callbacks after a session switch.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds extension statuses to Pi provider sessions, processes them through session updates and recovery, and displays them in mobile and web thread interfaces. It also gates storage cleanup sweeps on session liveness and makes Android dialog messages scrollable.

Changes: Pi Extension Statuses

Layer / File(s)Summary
Extension-status contract
packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts
Provider sessions now define bounded extension-status entries. Decoding supplies an empty list when the field is absent.
Pi status handling and lifecycle
packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.ts, packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.test.ts, docs/user/providers-pi.md
The Pi adapter processes status notifications, updates session snapshots, and clears or restores statuses during lifecycle operations. Tests cover status validation, updates, and lifecycle cases. The provider documentation describes extension status text.
Session updates and recovery
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderSessionManager.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderSessionManager.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderRuntimeRecoveryService.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionRecovery.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderRuntimeRecoveryService.test.ts
Session updates expose current snapshots and clear statuses on release. Metadata-only updates do not refresh activity. Recovery includes eligible error sessions and clears statuses in emitted updates.
Status selection and thread state
packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/use-thread-composer-state.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadRouteScreen.tsx
The client runtime derives statuses from the selected provider session. Composer state and the thread route pass the list to the thread screen.
Mobile and web status presentation
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadDetailScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/floating-working-control.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/floating-working-status.ts, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ComposerBanner.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ThreadActivityBanners.tsx
The mobile thread screen presents statuses in the floating control. The web composer displays them in a plain banner.

Storage Cleanup Liveness

Layer / File(s)Summary
Liveness-gated cleanup sweeps
apps/server/src/storageCleanup.ts, apps/server/src/storageCleanup.test.ts
Stopped or error provider-session updates trigger a sweep only when the session is no longer live. Tests cover sweep behavior with worktree deletion enabled and disabled.

Android Dialog Scrolling

Layer / File(s)Summary
Scrollable dialog message
apps/mobile/src/components/ui/Dialog.android.tsx
The non-input dialog message now uses vertical scrolling.

665-674: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Coalesce status-driven session updates before they reach the event store.

Each setStatus that changes the text publishes a provider_session.updated event. ProviderSessionManager persists each of these events. An extension that updates its status on a timer, such as a progress counter or spinner text, can append one durable event per tick. Each event carries the full status list, up to 32 entries of up to 4096 characters.

The existing check drops only identical text. It does not limit the update rate. Coalesce rapid text changes with a short trailing-edge flush, similar to scheduleStreamFlush. Apply status clears and removals without delay, or flush them on the same schedule, so stale statuses do not remain visible. This bounds event-store growth and websocket traffic.

Suggested direction

No line-level patch is proposed. The flush timing and the clear path must be designed together with the lifecycle reset logic in updateExtensionStatus and clearExtensionStatuses.

Keep Pi extension status updates as activity signals.

Pi can receive extension_ui_request events with method: "setStatus" while a native wake is pending. These events update extensionStatuses and emit provider_session.updated without changing the session status. The new metadataOnly branch skips the provider-activity refresh for them. If the wake remains pending, the session can reach the maxIdlePinMs limit and be released with idle_timeout while the extension is still reporting progress.

Keep unchanged metadata updates non-pinning, but treat a same-status update that changes extensionStatuses as provider activity.

The proposed classification would restore the idle-session leak this PR fixes. setStatus carries arbitrary UI text and can change indefinitely from a file watcher, even while no agent work is happening. Its text supplies no progress or liveness guarantee, including when an unrelated native wake is pending.

Pending work already receives the existing four-hour pin through hasPendingBackgroundWork. That cap deliberately bounds a wake without a T3 turn owner. An adopted busy turn is excluded from idle release; real provider events and session-status transitions still refresh activity. Comparing status text would let a watcher reset the cap forever. See the idle-release guard and pin.

I reran the three public TestClock controls: changing status text preserves expiry, while status transitions and provider work refresh it. All passed. Please withdraw this finding and the summary's request to make status text keep sessions alive.

I also checked the separate coalescing nit. Every distinct update currently persists; payload size is bounded and identical values are deduplicated. Coalescing could reduce timer traffic, but needs flush, clear and lifecycle-reset semantics. I am leaving that optional optimization out of this PR.

gpt-6.1-sol via Codex in T3 Code, responding for Wout.

@StiensWout You're right. I withdraw this finding and the summary’s request to make extension status text keep sessions alive.

setStatus text is UI metadata, not a reliable progress signal. Treating text changes as provider activity would reset pinnedSinceMs and could defeat the four-hour cap. The supplied implementation protects busy turns and refreshes activity for session-status transitions and other provider events.

No change is needed for this finding. Leaving coalescing out of this PR is also reasonable; it is an optional optimization with separate lifecycle requirements.
