Fixes #23844. Follow-up to #23828.

Muse put running children on the provider-thread background roster under itemId, but their subagent turn items carry childSessionId || subagentId ?? itemId. Readers pair roster entries with turn items by that id:

  • derivePendingBackgroundWork dedupes the two.
  • Restart recovery skips roster tasks it already cancelled as turn items.
  • #23828 drops the running follow-up turn's own children from the banner.

With different ids, the same child could show up twice. Real transcripts (subagent_v2/muse_transcript.ndjson) have three distinct ids per child, and childSessionId only appears in revision 2, so the turn item's id changes while the child runs.

Summary

diff
1 publishItem(subagent | workflow)
2 observedChildren keyed by itemId # stable key for routing and cleanup, unchanged

10
11+backgroundTaskId(item)
12+ subagent: childSessionId || (subagentId ?? itemId) # what the turn item's nativeItemRef already used
13+ workflow: itemId # its turn item uses itemId

The extra resync condition relists a running child when its id moves. A running child with an unchanged id is already listed, so it adds no extra provider_thread.updated emits.

Evidence

New test in packages/provider-muse/src/server/adapter.test.ts. It takes one child through four revisions and checks the roster ids against the turn item's native id:

text
1rev ids on item turn item nativeId roster (before) roster (after)
21 itemId only sub-1 [sub-1] [sub-1]
32 + subagentId subagent-1 [sub-1] ✗ [subagent-1]
43 + childSessionId child-session-1 [sub-1] ✗ [child-session-1]
54 completed child-session-1 [] []
  • Before: fails on main, because the roster stays sub-1.
  • After: passes. Muse adapter 37/37, MuseReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts 8/8, orchestrationV2PendingBackgroundWork 16/16. GPT-6.1-Sol (Codex) reviewed it and reported no findings.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

Only the roster's taskId strings change. Nothing persisted depends on the old ids beyond the live roster, which Muse rewrites on its next sync.

Blast Radius: Muse-only

The Muse adapter is the only file changed. The roster still clears on completion, failure, cancellation, and session release.

📝 Walkthrough

The Muse adapter now uses a shared identifier for subagent turn references and pending background task entries. It also refreshes the pending roster when a running child’s task ID changes. A regression test checks identifier selection across revisions and verifies that completion empties the roster.

Changes: Muse subagent task identity

Subagent native references and pending background task entries now use childSessionId, then subagentId, then itemId. Other items use itemId.

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, scope, affected behavior, regression test, and verification results. It also references the related issues and explains why prior approval is applicable to this focused bug fix.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR satisfies the coding requirements in issue #23844. backgroundTaskId selects childSessionId, then subagentId, then itemId for subagents, and itemId for workflows. The roster and turn-item native reference use the same identity. Running children resync when the identity changes. itemId remains the key for routing and cleanup. The regression test covers native-ID precedence, fallback, ID changes, and completion cleanup. The reported tests also cover pending-work deduplication and follow-up-turn filtering.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #23844. They modify Muse roster identity and synchronization, plus focused Muse adapter regression coverage. The tests support the requested behavior. No Claude background-command or unrelated provider changes are reported.

Fall back when an optional subagent ID is blank.

If Muse sends subagentId: "" without a childSessionId, backgroundTaskId returns an empty string. syncBackground then emits a pending task whose taskId violates the trimmed non-empty contract, even though itemId is available. Whitespace-only IDs have the same problem. Select the first non-blank ID, then fall back to itemId.

✅ Addressed in commit 83964f3

Fixed in 83964f30b8: blank childSessionId and subagentId now fall through to itemId (|| instead of ??), and the roster test covers a revision with subagentId: "". Whitespace-only IDs are not handled: Muse IDs are machine-generated and nothing indicates it ever sends one.

@koushikxd The updated || chain fixes the empty-string fallback. Thanks for adding regression coverage. I agree that whitespace-only handling is unnecessary here without evidence that Muse emits whitespace-only IDs.

Cover roster cleanup for failure, cancellation, and release.

The identity test checks an empty pendingBackgroundTasks roster only after completion. The failure test uses a mismatched native ID but does not inspect the roster. The cancellation tests do not create a mismatched-ID child. The disconnect tests check session state or hasPendingBackgroundWork, not the roster itself. Add one focused assertion for each path: after failure, cancellation, and release, read the latest provider_thread.updated event and assert that pendingBackgroundTasks ?? [] is empty after the child previously used a native ID different from its itemId.

@coderabbitai Declining the roster-cleanup nitpick. syncBackground rebuilds pendingBackgroundTasks from scratch out of observedChildren, which is keyed by itemId. Failure, cancellation and release all remove a child by deleting that key and resyncing, the same path the completion assertion already covers. The changed taskId only labels a running entry and plays no part in removing it, so three more assertions would retest unchanged code.
