A pasted image can finish compressing off-screen while the composer is resting, hiding the pending-image indicator even though sending is still blocked. composerHasExpandedChrome only sees hasImageAttachmentAttention, which checks completed standaloneComposerImages; include preparingComposerImages in that condition so the composer cannot collapse until the image is ready.

Keep the composer expanded while images are preparing.
The workspace drop handler clears its drag state and then calls addDroppedFiles. Intake registers preparing images without expanding the composer. If the composer is resting, expandedPreparingImages becomes empty and the temporary tile is not rendered.

β Addressed in commit 6539058
Addressed in 6539058: composerHasExpandedChrome now includes preparingComposerImages.length > 0, so the composer cannot rest while a placeholder is pending (same finding as Macroscope above).
@bmdavis419 Thanks. The supplied code includes preparingComposerImages.length > 0 in composerHasExpandedChrome. This addresses the finding by keeping the composer expanded while image placeholders are pending.

Removing an image while compression is pending still reports its later compression failure as a thread error, potentially replacing a newer send error after the removal frees the slot. The cancellation is checked only before the await; recheck isPreparingComposerImage(...) after it resolves and skip reporting for removed images.
