Problem

A native Claude background agent can return an interim completed / WAITING, then resume itself while its parent is idle. T3 leaves its card and Lineage Completed and holds its new child-thread steps until the final notification. The exact reported background-sleep prompt reproduces this in the real web dev app and server.

Change

Treat a registered terminal subagent's task_started under its current launch tool ID as continuation evidence. The existing continuation path reopens the same child, keeps a run subscribed to its events, and persists subsequent steps live. Explicit SendMessage resumes retain their existing admission behavior.

One adapter regression covers the real SDK frame order, child-owned background Bash, changed native run ID, parent user-turn coexistence, child routing and final completion. The committed scenario and composer seeder rebuild the same live SDK flow for evidence verification.

Scope and approval

Fixes #16610

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow; GitCafe mirror #16610. This changes only native Claude self-resume admission; it adds no option, persisted field or contract.

Verification

Merged current main f416175804 into the branch as 74c7c7722b. vp run check:changed passed: format, lint, knip, GraphQL, affected typechecks, and 209/209 adapter tests. git diff --check passed. The only conflict was Knip configuration; main’s general fixture entry covers the seeder, so this PR no longer changes Knip configuration. The adapter and regression auto-merged without overlapping changes.

vp run check:changed passed on b99b2daa5e: format, lint, knip, GraphQL, typecheck, and all 208 adapter tests. Check transcript. git diff --check passed.

Main 22840ab943 was merged with a merge commit. The audited adapter and regression test are byte-identical to 1f20a8caa2; later fixture import cleanup preserves the exact emitted browser expression. Main’s existing fixture glob covers the directly invoked seeder.

  • The new real-frame regression fails without resume admission: AssertionError: expected 1 to equal 2 (continuation count). The initial baseline also showed expected completed to equal running.
  • Real app baseline: SDK resume at 19:16:01.426; T3 only reopened at 19:17:09.698, immediately before final completion. Final implementation: SDK resume at 19:53:16.881; persisted Running at 19:53:17.298; subsequent child steps persisted live. Parent PONG completed while the child remained active, then DONE_SELF settled the same child.
  • Independent proof audit accepted all 16 viewport/theme/milestone pairs and independently verified all 32 diff images. Its rebuilt lifecycle persisted one child and five completed commands, including reload. The rebuild has 2.06% unmasked pixel differences from live titles, durations and hover; this is disclosed, with no claim of visual identity.

Integrated-head runtime

Repeated the exact committed fixture after merging main, at b99b2daa5e, on the real dev server and Chrome 154 at 1440×900 CSS, DPR 2, normal light appearance, default fonts. Recording starts 20:37:35.955 UTC and ends 20:39:43.673. SDK self-resume at +44.707s (20:38:20.662); persisted Running at20:38:20.663. At +52.3s send PONG request; assistant PONG persists at +53.8s while child remains Running. Open original child at +57s and expand running command group around +77s; resumed command rows appear live. DONE_SELF persists at +114.151s; reload the original child around +120s and verify final result survives. Return to parent at +126s. Exactly one persisted child and five completed commands (initial background sleep plus four resumed commands).

Evidence

Claude idle self-resume evidence

Before e54e71d725; after 1f20a8caa2. Fixture-only head d6a049d0bd.

Conditions and reproduction

Real web dev servers and live Claude Agent SDK, Claude Opus 5.5 Medium, fs-24 Linux, Chrome 154, no device emulation, DPR 2, zoom 1, default font scaling and loaded fonts. CSS viewports 1440×900 and 390×844, light and dark. Desktop PNG snapshots are tool-downsampled to 1280×800; desktop recordings preserve 2880×1800. Narrow snapshots and videos are 780×1688. Same exact synthetic prompt and cloned development data; clocks and provider-generated text are live, not frozen. No production projection seeding.

Run node scripts/fixtures/issue-16610/seed.js from the checked-out SHA and evaluate its output in a new isolated development draft with Claude Opus 5.5 Medium selected; submit normally. The committed scenario starts a background agent that launches a 30-second background Bash sleep, returns WAITING, resumes itself for four successive 15-second commands, then returns DONE_SELF. During resumed work send Reply with exactly PONG. Do not use tools. Open the original child and expand command history at successive milestones; return to parent and inspect Lineage, then final completion and reload.

What else changed

Intended: resumed cards and Lineage return to Running, progress and child commands stream before DONE_SELF, an existing background continuation run appears and adopts the child. Both original and continuation activity cards may reference the same child; persisted child IDs remain unique. Final outcomes settle normally.

Incidental visible differences: generated thread titles, model prose, timestamps, elapsed durations, command descriptions, native IDs, sidebar thread order and ages, branch/ref and commit controls, VCS diff counts (+227/−19 and later fixture +26), scroll positions from different text lengths, expanded command groups/Previous agents, number of recorded assistant responses, and live working indicators. Narrow-dark after recording includes a reconnecting banner before the later persisted final still. No claim that nothing else changed or that the pixel deltas isolate only the fix.

Limitations

Narrow M2 and M4 tables use supplemental full-lifecycle recordings with Lineage open; these replace the initial chat-only stills. See supplemental narrated checkpoints below.

The initial desktop-dark parent still preceded resume and is excluded. A supplemental baseline recording and post-resume still at 20:16:40 replace M1/M2; its SDK resume was 20:16:18.226. M3/M4 use the original baseline run. The original narrow-dark recording reconnects before final settlement; the independent supplemental recording replaces that missing final checkpoint. Native mobile and Electron are not separately certified; changed code is the shared Claude server adapter. Other providers are unchanged.

Comparison: original final 390-dark-M3-after.png versus first rebuild capture mvjzp73e-f3e3fea7. Raw changed pixels27,174; >16 pixels6,526. A conservative isolated achromatic-edge rule identifies only2 possible antialias pixels: all8 neighbors must be identical between images, both center colors interpolate the same achromatic neighbor bounds, and edge contrast exceeds32. Excluding only those candidates leaves27,172 pixels (2.064%). This is not a comprehensive or certain antialias classification; the raw27,174 remains authoritative. No data difference was erased as antialias. The dynamic differences are explicitly finding1.

Coverage is the four requested responsive-web/theme conditions for a shared Claude adapter change. Native mobile, Electron-specific shell behavior, other providers, remote relay/tunnel and exhaustive protocol combinations are not separately certified. Existing tests address protocol regressions; this review does not replace them.

Independent proof audit: SUFFICIENT. All 16 count pairs and 32 diff images independently match. Rebuild differences are disclosed above.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 74c7c77

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped Claude orchestration bug fix that restores running state and live event routing for self-resumed subagents. It includes a targeted regression test, while the additional fixture files are development-only and introduce no defaults, schema changes, or static-analysis overrides.

You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.

The one-line Knip change registers the manually invoked reproduction seeder as an executable entry, following the adjacent fixture pattern. It retains analysis of that entry and its dependencies; no ignore rule or analysis setting is disabled. The fixture and seeder are required by this issue's verification procedure.

A fresh source review confirmed this scope. The human-approval decision remains with the maintainer.

Walkthrough

The adapter now reopens a known terminal subagent when it receives a matching task_started event. The event can trigger a continuation. A regression test and reproduction fixture cover the resumed subagent lifecycle.

Changes: Claude subagent self-resume

Layer / File(s)Summary
Reopen terminal subagent tasks
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts
A matching task_started event resets the known subagent’s status and lifecycle data. The matching start can also trigger a continuation.
Validate resumed task lifecycle
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts, scripts/fixtures/issue-16610/*
The regression test checks that the subagent reopens under the continuation run, routes Bash to the child thread, and later completes with its final result. The fixture defines the reproduction prompt and a script that inserts it into the browser composer.

Some SendMessage resumes may leave the subagent’s displayed status out of sync or give it an incorrect final status. Restrict the early reopen to matching launch tool IDs before merging, or explicitly accept this bounded risk.

Explanation

The title "fix(server): show self-resumed Claude subagents as running" follows conventional commit format and names the main change: a native Claude background subagent that resumes itself while the parent is idle is reopened as running instead of staying Completed. The changeset (ClaudeAdapterV2.ts resume admission for task_started under the original launch tool ID, plus its regression test and reproduction fixture) matches this title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's sections (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification) and fills each with specific content. Problem explains the bug and reproduction. Change explains the continuation-evidence fix and the regression coverage. Scope links issue #16610 and states the change adds no option, persisted field, or contract. Verification gives test results, a failing-then-passing regression run, integrated-head runtime evidence, and disclosed limitations. The description is long and contains some noise (many media links and pixel tables), but the required information is present and substantive.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #16610 requires a terminal native Claude subagent to return to Running when task_started has the same task ID and original launch tool_use_id, then stream resumed child steps before final completion. The adapter change reopens the registered terminal task, clears stale terminal data, and admits only the matching launch tool as continuation evidence. The supplied regression summary covers the changed run ID, child Bash routing, parent user-turn coexistence, and final completion. The reported adapter checks pass.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #16610. The product change is limited to native Claude self-resume admission. The regression test and the issue-16610 scenario and seeder support the required reproduction. The change adds no unrelated provider behavior, option, persisted field, or contract.

Reviewed the registry finding against base and head with a fresh step agent. The registry reopen is unchanged from base: it previously used Ref.update with the same state transition for every known terminal task_started. This PR adds only the matching-launch-ID boolean for continuation admission. Mismatched IDs and SendMessage retain base behavior. The existing races-past-settle regression covers buffering a SendMessage resume until its notification. Restricting the registry mutation would change that separate path; the hypothetical buffer-clear/query-exit sequence is not an introduced regression. Declining this suggestion to preserve the existing behavior.
