Problem

A delegated Claude child can start a background Bash command, return an interim result, then wake itself when the command finishes. The later run completes, but its parent receives no notification. Reproduced on current main with an async Claude Opus 5.5 child running sleep 60: the parent received WAITING, while the child's final canary remained unread.

Change

Allow non-monitor notification wakes to create ordinary delegated follow-up tasks after the original result. Use the same eligibility check for follow-up intake and parent-before-child locking, and permit provider notifications without a parent sender. Monitor, scheduled-task, and restart-continuation exclusions remain in place.

This uses the follow-up eligibility approach proposed in #21813, with a focused regression test against current main.

Scope and approval

Fixes #21772 GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/21772 Triaged bug via the automated issue flow; accepted report #21772. Changes are limited to server orchestration and its existing test file.

Verification

The regression also asserts the exact final assistant result from the provider-woken run (9ca66bb61c). This test-only follow-up leaves the production code used for the runtime evidence unchanged.

  • Red test at c9cfae301c: the provider-woken run has no delegatedTaskId; the new assertion fails. Failing output.
  • vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/DelegatedCompletionDelivery.test.ts: 27/27 passed, including the regression and existing monitor cases. Neighboring orchestration suites: 168/168 passed.
  • vp run check:changed: passed format, lint, knip, server GraphQL generation, scoped typechecks, and selected tests. Lint reports one pre-existing unused-variable warning.
  • Fresh Codex and Claude reviews found no blocking issues. Proof audit independently matched the transcript to persisted events and passed.
  • Runtime: Linux x64, isolated seeded worktree state, real web dev server/browser at 1280Γ—800, Claude Agent with claude-opus-5-5. Same native background-command sequence before and after; the parent never polls or manually resumes/sends to the child.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 9ca66bb

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable β€” This is a focused server bug fix that lets non-monitor provider wakes create delegated follow-ups and notify the parent, while preserving scheduled-task, restart-continuation, and monitor exclusions. The change is confined to orchestration logic with a targeted regression test and no schema or deployment impact.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

The orchestrator now applies shared eligibility checks to delegated-child follow-ups and parent-thread locking. A regression test verifies that recovery of a provider-notification run delivers the child result and requests a subsequent wake for the parent.

Changes: Delegated child follow-up notifications

Layer / File(s)Summary
Notification eligibility and follow-up handling
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts
A shared predicate excludes scheduled tasks, restart continuations, and monitor notifications. Follow-up recording and parent-thread locking use this predicate. The child-thread check permits eligible notifications from the parent thread.
Regression test for provider notification follow-up
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/DelegatedCompletionDelivery.test.ts
The test recovers an initial delegated wake, completes the parent run, and dispatches a provider-originated notification in the child thread. It verifies that recovery marks the delegated task completed with the assistant result and requests a distinct subsequent wake for the parent run.

Explanation

The PR satisfies the coding requirement in [#21772]. mayStartSubagentFollowup now admits eligible provider notifications, including background-command wakes, and excludes monitor notifications, scheduled tasks, and restart continuations. Follow-up intake and parent-before-child locking use this eligibility check. The regression test verifies that the provider-woken child creates a delegated follow-up and delivers its final result to the parent. Reported focused and neighboring orchestration tests passed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within [#21772]. The production change updates server orchestration eligibility and locking. The test change covers the provider-woken delegated-child case and preserves exclusion coverage. No unrelated client, platform, or feature changes are identified.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description covers the problem, change, scope, approval context, and verification. It includes reproduction details, linked issue references, focused test results, runtime evidence, and tool attribution. It does not quote an explicit maintainer approval comment, but the triaged issue and accepted report provide sufficient scope context for a focused bug fix.

Assert the provider-woken result

The test checks delivery metadata, but not followup.result. A regression that stores the original interim result while preserving the asserted status, delivery state, and request identifiers can pass. Add a distinct assistant result to the provider-woken run and assert that the parent task receives it.

  • test(server): assert a background-wake follow-up delivers its final message9ca66bb

Addressed the result-coverage finding in 9ca66bb61c: the provider-woken run now gets a distinct assistant response, and the regression asserts that exact follow-up result. Removing the response makes the assertion fail against the placeholder. Scoped check:changed passed, including 38/38 tests; both fresh reviewers approved. Production code is unchanged.
