Problem

On a desktop tab that draws no frames (for example one opened with open: false), Page.captureScreenshot never answers. preview_snapshot survives this because #20446 bounded the whole snapshot at 10 s. captureViewport itself has no bound, though, and preview_recording_start awaits it inside the tab's control queue and capture lock. So the recording start never finishes, and every later action on the tab (evaluate, click, type) waits behind it until the broker gives up, evicts the host, and the tab is closed.

Fixes #23514. Refs #23022, the same unbounded capture reported from the viewer's still frame. This bounds that caller too, but a snapshot can still wait up to 5 s on the capture lock before its own 10 s bound starts, so it does not fully fix #23022.

Change

captureViewport (apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowserPage.ts) now races the capture against a 5 s deadline and fails with a PreviewAutomationTimeoutError. That bounds all three callers: the snapshot, the recording's first frame, and the viewer still frame. CDP cannot cancel a screenshot, so a session keeps at most one unanswered: a later capture waits, within its bound, for the earlier one to settle instead of sending another. A capture that cannot finish now fails, and the tab's queue and capture lock move on.

diff
1-export const captureViewport = async (page, cdp, options) => {
2- ...Page.captureScreenshot...
3-};
4+const readViewport = async (page, cdp, options) => { ...Page.captureScreenshot... };
5+export const captureViewport = async (page, cdp, options) =>
6+ Promise.race([readViewport(page, cdp, options), rejectAfter(CAPTURE_TIMEOUT_MS)]);

A healthy capture is unaffected (50–300 ms in practice). A snapshot behaves as before: it still fails at its own 10 s bound, because it retries once.

Scope and approval

This is a very small, focused fix for the bug in #23514, the part of #16567 its closing comment asked to be filed separately. It doesn't make hidden tabs draw; #22877 does that. This PR only bounds the wait, so a capture that still can't finish fails instead of wedging the tab. It touches one function and doesn't overlap the files #22877 changes.

Verification

End to end, before and after, on vp run dev:desktop (isolated dev state, macOS 26.6.2; desktop-rendered tab, confirmed by registerWebview in the desktop trace). An agent ran preview_open {open:false} → preview_snapshot → preview_recording_start → preview_evaluate → preview_click → preview_status. Durations come from the server trace (PreviewToolkit.invoke):

CallBefore (main)After
preview_snapshotfails, 10,010 msfails, 10,012 ms
preview_recording_startfails, 16,002 ms, host evictedfails, 10,867 ms, no eviction
preview_evaluatefails, 16,003 ms, host evictedok, 10 ms
preview_clickfails, 16,003 ms, host evictedok, 213 ms

The "before" sequence matches an incident on the released 0.1.1 (snapshot fails at 10 s, then recordingStart, type, evaluate and click each fail at 16 s with an eviction, until the tab is closed).

Focused test: fails a capture the page never answers instead of waiting for it in apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowserPage.test.ts. Under fake timers, a CDP session whose send never settles makes captureViewport reject with PreviewAutomationTimeoutError once 5 s have passed. Without the change it hangs until the 120 s test timeout. With it, all 39 tests in ServerBrowserPage.test.ts and ServerBrowser.test.ts pass, including the snapshot tests that drive a real headless Chromium. vp run check:changed passes.

What I could not check:

  • Windows and Linux desktop. Only macOS was run.
  • Behaviour together with #22877. With it, hidden tabs should draw and this bound should rarely fire.

The agent-facing error text still says "timed out after 15000ms" for these server-side timeouts, because the broker formats them with its own timeout. That's a separate issue, and this PR doesn't change it.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 246636a

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This narrowly bounds previously unending preview captures with a typed five-second timeout, preventing tab queues from remaining blocked while preserving successful capture behavior. The added test directly verifies the non-answering case.

Walkthrough

Viewport screenshot capture now rejects with PreviewAutomationTimeoutError after five seconds. A new capture waits for an unanswered screenshot request in the same CDP session to settle before sending another request.

A screenshot that never answers no longer holds the capture queue indefinitely. Later screenshots on that session still time out until the original request settles, so session recovery remains a bounded follow-up risk.

Explanation

The changes stay within [#23514] and the capture-timeout portion of [#23022]. They add shared screenshot timeout handling, unanswered-request serialization, and focused regression tests. No unrelated feature or hidden-tab rendering change is included.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is thorough and follows the template. It states the problem (unbounded Page.captureScreenshot wait that blocks the tab control queue and capture lock), the change (a 5 s deadline in captureViewport that rejects with PreviewAutomationTimeoutError, plus single in-flight capture per session), scope and approval (links #23514 and refs #23022, and explains why it is a small focused fix of a bug in #16567 and does not overlap #22877), and verification (before/after end-to-end table on macOS, a focused fake-timer test, 39 passing tests, and a list of what was not checked). It also names the model and harness. The Scope and approval section relies on an argument that the fix is a very small obvious bug fix; the description cites the closing comment on #16567 but does not link an explicit maintainer approval comment, so a reviewer may want that link. That gap is minor and does not undermine the description as a whole.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The change meets the core requirement in [#23514]. captureViewport starts a 5-second deadline, rejects with PreviewAutomationTimeoutError, and prevents additional screenshot sends while an earlier CDP request remains unanswered. The focused tests cover timeout, request suppression, and single-send recovery. The change does not meet the complete coding requirements in [#23022]. The deadline does not cover captureLock acquisition or viewer pause/resume. The pending CDP request is not canceled or retired. The required paintable-frame handling and viewer, profile, background-tab, headless, disconnect, and close coverage are not shown.

Resolution

Add a deadline around the complete snapshot and viewer-capture operation, starting before lock acquisition. Safely cancel or retire stalled CDP and native capture work, and release capture state on failure, disconnect, and tab close. Add the required viewer, profile, background-tab, headless, and lifecycle tests from [#23022].

Bound timed-out screenshot requests on reused CDP sessions.

captureViewport rejects after 5 seconds, but the underlying Page.captureScreenshot request remains pending. Snapshot retries reuse input.cdp. Viewer still-frame captures reuse one session for the viewer lifetime. The capture lock serializes these calls, but it does not cancel or replace the pending request. Repeated timeouts can therefore accumulate pending Playwright command callbacks.

Prevent a timed-out capture from leaving an unbounded pending request on a session that handles later captures. Limit retries until the request settles, or use a disposable or replaceable capture session. Do not detach the shared tab.cdp without replacing it.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @DavidMendesOS

Valid in part, fixed in the next commit. The pending request is real: CDP cannot cancel Page.captureScreenshot, so a timed-out capture stays pending until the page draws or the session closes. This already happened before this PR through the snapshot's 10 s race; without the bound, though, the caller waited forever instead.

captureViewport now keeps at most one unanswered screenshot per session. A later capture waits, within its own 5 s bound, for the earlier one to settle and sends nothing until then, so timeouts no longer pile up requests. A separate or replaceable session would not help on desktop tabs: the desktop relay routes every page session to the same debugger. New test: sends no new screenshot while an earlier one is unanswered.

@DavidMendesOS The supplied implementation addresses the request-accumulation concern. unansweredCaptures permits at most one unanswered screenshot per CDP session. Later captures wait within their own 5-second deadline. The loop rechecks the pending state, so concurrent waiters cannot all send when the earlier request settles.

You are also correct that the snapshot’s existing timeout could already leave a pending request. My original wording did not distinguish that pre-existing behavior from repeated request accumulation.

The per-session gate addresses this finding without replacing or detaching the shared session. I have not run the regression tests.

5Learning: In `pingdotgg/t3code` pull request #8103, `DesktopSnapShot` native region capture serializes timed-out native calls: a timeout prevents overlapping capture work, and capture resumes when the native call later settles. The native API has no cancellation mechanism, so a permanently stuck native call requires an app restart.

Recheck the unanswered capture after each wait.

Callers that wait on the same unanswered capture resume together. Each one then sends a new screenshot without checking whether another caller has already sent one. The second send overwrites the first caller's entry. When the second screenshot settles, its cleanup removes the entry while the first screenshot is still unanswered. A later call can then send another request on that session. This breaks the one-unanswered-request rule described in the comment above unansweredCaptures.

Two callers can wait on the same entry. The snapshot path can throw before its screenshot settles, for example from the ariaSnapshot timeout or from the pageChanged() checks. void pageAndScreenshot.catch(constVoid) leaves that screenshot running. Its captureViewport call then waits on the existing entry. A later caller can wait on the same entry too.

Re-read the map in a loop so that each resumed caller waits for any newer unanswered capture before it sends.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @DavidMendesOS

Valid, fixed with your loop in the next commit: each waiting capture re-reads the map after waking, so only the first to resume sends and the rest wait on its request. New test: lets only one waiting capture send once the unanswered one settles (three waiters produce one new send; three without the loop).

@DavidMendesOS The loop in the supplied code addresses the race. Each waiting capture re-reads unansweredCaptures before sending, so only one caller sends the next request. The reported three-waiter regression test covers this case.
