fix(clients): later image reads show updated file contents#23510
Problem
A later Read of an overwritten image reused an earlier Read’s signed URL and displayed stale bytes. Writing red, green, then blue to the same path and expanding each Read showed red in all three previews.
Change
Include the Read item identity in the client asset-query cache key on web and mobile. Strip that identity before RPC execution, including the local-media fallback, so each later Read obtains a fresh URL while repeated rendering of the same Read reuses its cache entry. The server contract is unchanged.
Scope and approval
Fixes #13138
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. This only corrects inspected-image cache reuse; it does not snapshot historical image bytes.
Verification
- Regression test failed on main: later Read descriptors were identical. Both focused files now pass, 22 tests, including after merging main.
- Production atom test verifies same-key reuse, distinct-key URLs, and removal of the client key from remote and fallback RPCs; a mutation check fails when stripping is removed.
- Scoped client-runtime, web, and mobile typechecks passed. Targeted lint and formatting passed.
- Real app with Claude: already-open red rows remained red; a new Read after overwriting green displayed RGB 0,255,0.
- Paired real-web recordings show stale red/red/red before and red/green/blue after, including atomic replacement outside the workspace. Row collapse/reopen and one lightbox open/close added no signing requests in summarized traces; the atom test directly proves reuse.

Before: atomic overwrite recording · After: atomic overwrite recording. At approximately 0.8 seconds R1 is red, 2.4 seconds follows green replacement/R2, and 4 seconds follows blue replacement/R3. Baseline stays red; fixed previews update.
Visible differences: later Read image colors change; small breadcrumb hover contrast also differs. Desktop recording-derived frames include codec noise and a Scroll-to-end affordance difference. The index lists every observed difference; no pixel-equivalence claim is made.
Limitations: captures above predate the main merge; exact revision provenance is in the index. Independent final-head reconstruction passed: atomic overwrite yielded decoded red/green/blue; all 17 delivered diff pairs and 68 image hashes verified. Grouped/detail-only extraction, event-ingestion captures, retry/thread revisit, and ordinary markdown/tool-output visual controls are incomplete. Static conditional fixtures bypass signing. Native iOS is unverified: both source-specific EAS builds failed to resolve GhosttyKit despite the framework being included. Electron desktop is unverified on this Linux VM. cannot-verify ios desktop.
Independent final-head rebuild: red, green, and blue

Approvability
Verdict: Needs Human Approval
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This is a focused web/mobile bug fix that separates cached image URLs by Read identity while preserving existing server behavior, with targeted regression coverage. It also adds a Knip ignore entry for a standalone fixture, so the static-analysis configuration change warrants human review.

- fix(scripts): seed Read fixture paths with JSON escapingbf4c90b
Fixed in bf4c90b147: JSON-escape the replacement path and parse the fixture before creating its destination. A real seed with quotes and backslashes now succeeds with exact paths in all three Read rows; malformed fixture JSON leaves no destination behind. Also reproduced Knip’s unused-file finding for the browser-pasted fixture and added a single-file workspace exemption. Knip, scoped lint, formatting, and focused follow-up review pass.

📝 Walkthrough
Viewed work-log images now use each work-entry ID as a signing key for asset URL cache identity. Mobile and web renderers pass the key through URL resolution. Tests and fixtures cover repeated reads and image states.

Explanation
Issue
#13138requires an image preview to show the current file contents after a later Read. The web and mobile renderers pass each Read item ID as a signing key. The client asset query uses that key for cache separation, then removes it before remote RPC and local-media fallback execution. Focused tests cover same-key reuse, distinct-key URLs, and key removal. The implementation therefore refreshes later Reads without changing the server contract.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed renderer, shared client-runtime logic, regression tests, image fixture, seed script, and Knip entry support the image-preview cache fix in issue
#13138. The fixture and seed script provide reproducible verification for successive image overwrites. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated feature is demonstrated.

The CodeRabbit Knip finding is against 8c711e7 and is already fixed by bf4c90b147: knip.jsonc documents and exempts exactly this browser-pasted fixture in the scripts workspace. Local Knip passes. Macroscope has also marked the path-escaping finding no longer relevant on the new head. Current CI is still running.
Reviewed at bf4c90b. The fix is correct and I have no blocking concerns on the production change. Notes below.
Why the mechanism holds (checked on main)
AssetAccess.tsbuilds each token fromexpiresAt = now + ASSET_TOKEN_TTL_MS(~L522), and that value goes into the signed claims. Two signing calls therefore return different URLs.http.ts:107serves these withCache-Control: private, max-age=3600, so the browser HTTP cache is only bypassed because the URL string changes. The newsigningKeyforces a fresh signing call per Read, which is what bypasses it.- Stripping
signingKeyinexecutebefore both the RPC and the local-media fallback keeps the server contract unchanged. The atom test covers this, including the fallback path.
Non-blocking
- Earlier Read rows can still change later. The key is the Read's item id, so row 1 keeps its URL only while that cache entry lives. Once the entry is evicted, or
useAssetUrlRefreshre-signs after expiry or an image error, row 1 signs again for the same path and shows the file's current bytes. The PR scope already says historical bytes are not snapshotted. The "already-open red rows remained red" evidence only covers rows that were not re-signed. I did not run this. A line in the PR description would keep #13138 reporters from reading it as a regression. - About 380 of the 562 added lines are verification tooling kept in-tree. That is
read-image-cache.json(237 lines),seed-read-image-cache.py(69),read-cache-web-states.js(78) and aknip.jsoncexemption. The seed script hardcodes/tmp/issue-13138-fixture/.... The JS fixture says it bypasses asset hooks and signing, so it does not exercise the fix. The same goes for the 5-state appearance page: it only rendersChatMarkdownImagewith preset states. The production change plus its two unit tests is roughly 180 lines. I'd drop these from the PR and keep them in the linked evidence index, which also removes the Knip exemption. - Minor duplication.
signingKey === undefined ? { resource } : { resource, signingKey }appears inapps/web/src/assets/assetUrls.ts(assetUrlInput) and inline inapps/mobile/src/state/assets.ts. A small helper next toAssetUrlQueryInputinclient-runtimewould keep them in sync.
Housekeeping
mergeable_stateisdirty, so the branch needs a rebase onmain.- The open CodeRabbit thread (Knip,
read-cache-web-states.js:1) looks addressed by theknip.jsoncchange in bf4c90b. It is not resolved yet. - iOS and Electron are unverified, as the PR says. Grouped and detail-only Read rows are also listed as incomplete. Since
itemIdis now a required argument, a grouped row passing a group id instead of the entry id would silently share one key, so those paths are worth a quick manual look.

Following up on my review to make one thing explicit. This PR fixes stale images in chat Read rows (#13138) and I'm not asking for it to grow. It does not cover the Files preview panel when a PNG is regenerated on disk outside an agent turn, and I'd like that case fixed too, as a separate change.
FilePreviewPanel loads images from a signed URL with ?workspace-revision=<workspaceMutationId>. ChatView.tsx derives that ID only from the thread's latest settled command_execution / file_change item and the latest checkpoint's completedAt. I found no filesystem watcher or mtime check feeding it. If something other than the agent rewrites the PNG (a terminal, an editor, a dev-server task), the preview stays stale until the next agent command or edit.
Related, still open:
- Discussion 20927 asks for the opposite: don't reload unless the open file actually changed.
- PR #23732 adds a server-reported file revision for PDF previews. The same revision could key image previews and would cover both directions.
If a maintainer prefers a different home for this, say so and I'll move it to an Ideas discussion.
