Problem

An outside read transaction on statev2.sqlite could indefinitely stop all server writes once the WAL passed its size/frame thresholds. Holding a read open while appending data reproduced a stalled insert at a 39.3 MiB WAL; a real server with an already oversized, pinned WAL stayed unavailable until the reader closed.

Change

Let the checkpoint worker release writer admission when a reader prevents PASSIVE backfill or TRUNCATE from completing. Re-arm the frame-ceiling gate for each write so normal checkpoint/truncate coordination remains intact. The WAL may grow while a reader pins it, matching SQLite WAL behavior. Keep the existing idle retry active above either limit so the WAL is reclaimed after the reader leaves even if no further write arrives.

Scope and approval

Fixes #23482 GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/23482 Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. Shared server persistence only; no client, schema, wire-contract, provider, or configuration changes.

Verification

  • vp test run src/nodeSqliteClient.test.ts in packages/shared: 19/19 passed. Two reader fixtures cover incomplete PASSIVE backfill and fully backfilled WAL with a reader blocking TRUNCATE. Both fail against the base source; restoring only the old TRUNCATE logic fails only the second fixture. A third regression test waits for a failed truncate, closes the reader, then verifies WAL reset without another write; it fails on the prior PR head and passes with the retry fix.
  • Targeted vp lint on the two changed files: passed. vp run typecheck in packages/shared: passed (existing Effect suggestions only).
  • Reporter script: before, write 552 stalls for over five seconds at 39.3 MiB; after, all 1,500 inserts finish with the reader still open at 106.9 MiB.
  • Real server, isolated .t3 state: before, an outside reader pinning a 46.29 MiB WAL prevents startup and returns HTTP 503; after, startup completes and /api/auth/session returns HTTP 200 before the reader closes. Live state was never mutated. All test-owned processes stopped.
EvidenceBeforeAfter

Focused regression suiteRed failures recorded in before transcript19/19 final test output

Server-only proof: visual fixture matrix is empty. The original server availability capture predates the final idle-retry addition, which is covered by the new reset test. The final-head runtime reproduction still completes all 1,500 writes with the reader open. Verified on Linux with Node v26.12.1 initially and Node v24.22.1 / SQLite 3.53.4 for the final checks. macOS/Electron was not exercised; no platform-specific client code changed. Independent Codex and Claude reviews passed; final proof audit found the evidence sufficient.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval โ€” This production SQLite change relaxes writer admission when checkpointing is incomplete so writes continue while readers pin the WAL. Human review is warranted because an unresolved comment identifies that the same checkpoint result may also be caused by an active writer, potentially bypassing intended backpressure.

๐Ÿ“ Walkthrough

The checkpoint worker now distinguishes reader-pinned WAL frames when reporting backpressure and schedules retries while WAL limits apply. The writer admission gate no longer blocks solely because the WAL reaches its frame ceiling. New tests cover continued writes and checkpoint retry after an outside reader closes.

Changes: WAL backpressure

Layer / File(s)Summary
Checkpoint backpressure policy
packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.ts
The checkpoint worker detects when a PASSIVE checkpoint leaves frames uncheckpointed. It reports writes as blocked only when WAL limits apply, backfill remains incomplete, and no reader pin is detected. It schedules retries based on WAL limits. After truncation, it reports blocked: false and schedules another check based on WAL limits.
Writer admission and regression coverage
packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.ts, packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.test.ts
The admission gate no longer blocks solely because the WAL reaches its frame ceiling. WAL observation still sets the blocked state at that ceiling. Tests verify that writes continue while an outside reader pins the WAL and that the worker retries truncation after the reader closes, without another write.

Explanation

Issue #23482 requires writes to continue while a reader pins the WAL. The supplied change summary shows reader-pinned PASSIVE and TRUNCATE checkpoints no longer keep writer admission closed. It also shows that the frame-ceiling gate is re-armed per write and that retry scheduling remains active above the WAL limits. The regression tests cover both checkpoint stages and verify WAL reset after the reader closes without another write. The PR reports 19/19 focused tests passed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The supplied change summary limits the implementation to shared SQLite checkpoint and writer-admission logic and focused regression tests in packages/shared. These changes support issue #23482. No unrelated client, schema, wire-contract, provider, or configuration changes are shown.

  • fix(shared): a WAL a reader kept from resetting resets once the reader closes2f83c05

Verified both findings against the worker and isolated SQLite connections.

The missing idle retry is fixed in 2f83c05. Both PASSIVE and TRUNCATE paths now retain the existing retry while the WAL exceeds a limit, without keeping writer admission closed. The new regression test releases the reader after a failed truncate, sends no more writes, and waits for the WAL to reset. 19/19 focused tests pass.

The PASSIVE finding does not reproduce. SQLite's walCheckpoint implementation backfills its captured committed WAL header subject to reader locks; uncommitted writer frames are outside that snapshot. On SQLite 3.53.4, an active spilling writer returned log/checkpointed 601/601, a small open write transaction 1105/1105, and a pinned reader 1258/1108 (probe output; its later truncate lines are a separate setup, not evidence for the pinned-truncate case). A busy checkpointer returns -1/-1, which is not classified as pinned. Restoring admission blocking for every incomplete PASSIVE result reproduces the original reader stall. Admission therefore remains unchanged for this finding.

Both independent follow-up reviews passed. The final-head runtime reproduction completes all 1,500 writes while the reader remains open. Macroscope's human-approval gate remains in place; this PR will not be merged by this workflow.

Synced from GitHub

Independent check of this PR at 2f83c05, applied to 0.1.2-nightly.20261022.3541 (base 044f072).

PR tests. On stock 3541 the three new reader tests fail (write 39 is held by admission, WAL at 41,517,272 bytes). Patched: src/nodeSqliteClient.test.ts 19/19, all of packages/shared 1026 passed, 2 skipped.

Active writer, no reader (the Macroscope concern). The test below writes 256 ร— 1 MiB rows at concurrency 8 with the checkpoint worker on and journal_size_limit at 32 MiB, sampling the -wal size every 10 ms. Stock and patched were identical across three runs each: WAL max 39.6 MiB, 22.3 MiB after the burst, 256/256 rows. With no reader pinning the WAL, admission behaves as it did before the patch.

Live database, patched build. A 41 GB statev2.sqlite under normal multi-thread agent load. We held one outside read transaction for 150 s. The WAL grew from 29.5 to 74.9 MB while 2,056 write transactions committed. The worst writer db.lock_wait_ms was 2.2 s, and orchestration.dispatchCommand took 2โ€“10 ms. Within 2 minutes of the reader closing, the WAL reset to 5.1 MB without a restart.

Reproduce

  1. Check out 044f072 and save the file below as packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.backpressure.test.ts.
  2. From packages/shared: BP_LABEL=STOCK BP_OUT=bp.txt vp test run src/nodeSqliteClient.backpressure.test.ts
  3. Apply this PR's nodeSqliteClient.ts and run again with BP_LABEL=PATCHED. Compare the two lines in bp.txt.
  4. Live check: from a separate process, run BEGIN; SELECT count(*) FROM sqlite_master; against the server's statev2.sqlite, leave it open for a few minutes while the app works, and watch the -wal size and the db.lock_wait_ms attribute on sql.transaction spans in server.trace.ndjson. Stock stops writes once the WAL passes 32 MiB; patched keeps writing and resets the WAL after the reader closes.
