Problem

When Electron loses the safeStorage key, every desktop connection-catalog read rejects and blocks listing or adding environments. An undecryptable catalog reproduces the failure through the real renderer IPC on Linux; the report describes Windows key loss.

Change

Preserve the encrypted snapshot in a deterministic .undecryptable backup before returning an empty catalog and logging a warning. The next save encrypts a fresh catalog normally. Backup failure still rejects the read, and backing up the snapshot preserves the original ciphertext across concurrent saves. The envelope and IPC contracts remain unchanged.

Scope and approval

Fixes #8341 GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/8341 Triaged bug via the automated issue flow; issue and reproduction. This only changes native desktop catalog recovery, with focused regression tests and a committed native fixture.

Verification

Independent proof audit: SUFFICIENT at 248ab74, including a separate native replay matching every recovery and reload result row. The subsequent diagnostic fix only classifies backup-write errors, removes raw error text from warning annotations, and strengthens the failure test; recovery and backup contents are unchanged. All seven focused tests, targeted lint/format and desktop typecheck passed again after that fix.

  • Focused catalog suite: 7 passed. The lost-key regression fails on the original base with decrypt-catalog; a deterministic concurrent-save regression catches replacement of the original backup. Preservation failure leaves the catalog intact.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, desktop typecheck and all seven tests passed. The standalone fixture was then registered in Knip and vp run knip:check passed both files/dependencies and scoped exports checks.
  • Real Electron 44.9.3, Linux x64, Xvfb and isolated gnome_libsecret: empty recovery, exactly one backup across repeated/concurrent reads, identical ciphertext, encrypted save verified with actual safeStorage, and successful fresh-process reload.

Final evidence index, results, provenance and fixture matrix. The visual matrix is empty because no render path changed. Backup JSON is normalized; ciphertext is preserved, rather than arbitrary JSON formatting. Original RED uses the historical base module in isolation, not a full historical checkout.

Unverified: native Windows DPAPI/Local State/profile reset, macOS Keychain reset, and the actual reconnect UI/account-backed connection. Linux exercises the shared recovery branch; backup-write failure is covered by the focused test only.

Implemented with Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1-Sol through T3 Code using the Claude Agent and Codex harnesses.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The PR adds focused recovery behavior and regression coverage for catalogs orphaned by safeStorage key loss, while preserving the existing IPC and storage envelope contracts. Human review is required because the production file adds a directive disabling the nodeBuiltinImport static-analysis diagnostic.

📝 Walkthrough

The connection catalog store now preserves encrypted catalog bytes when safe-storage decryption fails and returns no catalog. Tests cover concurrent reads, saving during a read, and preservation failures. An Electron fixture checks recovery and reload behavior.

Changes: Connection catalog recovery

Layer / File(s)Summary
Preserve catalogs after decryption failures
apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopConnectionCatalogStore.ts
The store uses the encrypted bytes’ SHA-256 digest to name a backup. It reuses an existing backup, reports preservation failures as write errors, and returns no catalog after safe-storage decryption fails.
Test recovery, preservation, and reload
apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopConnectionCatalogStore.test.ts, apps/desktop/scripts/connection-catalog-native-fixture.cjs, knip.jsonc
Unit tests cover concurrent reads, saving during a read, and failed preservation operations. The Electron fixture checks recovery and reload behavior, records evidence, and Knip lists the fixture as an entry.

Assert the preservation failure and the absence of a backup.

Effect.flip accepts any error. Capture the error and assert its tag and operation. Also assert that the failed preservation does not leave an .undecryptable file. The other tests check backup creation after successful preservation, not this failure contract.

  • fix(desktop): classify failed catalog backups as preservation errorsa4df9e9

Fixed both actionable findings and the failure-test nit in a4df9e9: backup-write errors now retain their cause under preserve-undecryptable-catalog, warning annotations contain only the error tag, and the failure test verifies the error, no backup, and unchanged source. The stronger test failed before the mapping fix; all seven focused tests, targeted lint/format and desktop typecheck pass. Independent review found no regression in this delta.

Test results for #23470 from the macOS desktop app. These builds are arm64 dmgs of main (ff525478), this PR (a4df9e92) and #23488 (64c8a1ac), run on an M-series Mac with isolated state and their own Keychain item.

Setup. I seeded two saved environments through the legacy saved-environments.json migration and let each build write its own encrypted catalog (1088 bytes). Then I quit the app, changed the ciphertext and relaunched, in two ways:

  • Junk decrypt: flip bytes in the first AES block. The last block still unpads, so decryptString succeeds and returns junk, the same as a wrong key whose padding happens to pass (about 1 in 256). The reporter's correction on #23470 says this is what happened on the Mac that lost its catalog: get succeeded and set followed 36 ms later.
  • Decrypt throws: replace the ciphertext with random blocks.
BuildJunk decryptDecrypt throws
maincatalog overwritten with 212 bytes, nothing keptfile untouched, environments don't load
this PRcatalog overwritten with 212 bytes, nothing kept.undecryptable copy kept
#23488original kept as .unreadable-<ms>, then 212-byte catalog writtenfile untouched

212 bytes is the empty catalog from the report. On the junk path, get returns the junk, the renderer's corrupt-catalog recovery in makeCatalogStore saves EMPTY_CONNECTION_CATALOG_DOCUMENT, and this PR never reaches preserveUndecryptableCatalog.

Main before and after the junk-decrypt relaunch:

main before main after

Suggested change. Check that the decrypted text is JSON before returning it, and send the decode error down the same backup path. A JSON check is enough here; a full schema check would reject the partial catalogs this PR's tests store. With this change, the added test fails on a4df9e92 and all 8 tests in the file pass, and the desktop typecheck passes:

#23488 covers the junk case at the write instead, but it changes the same function, so only one of the two approaches should land.
