Problem

An installed hosting CLI whose --version probe fails is reported as missing. Put a gh wrapper that sleeps 10 seconds (or exits 1) first on the server's PATH, open Settings → Source control, and choose Rescan server environment. The GitHub row says "Not available on this server: Install the GitHub command-line tool (gh) …", and the item's auth detail says the command was not found on the server PATH. The CLI is installed; only its probe failed. The Forgejo / Gitea row behaves the same way when fj is slow and tea is not installed.

Change

  • probeCli (source-control-core discovery) keeps the CLI's install hint only when the executable is genuinely absent (isMissingExecutable). For any other probe failure, the hint names the probe command and what happened ("timed out after 5000ms", "exited with status 1", or "failed") and points at the executable the server's PATH resolves.
  • An unavailable item's unknown-auth detail reuses that hint instead of the fixed "not found on the server PATH" text. For a genuinely absent CLI that detail is now its install hint; clients do not render the auth detail of an unavailable item.
  • The Forgejo row falls back to tea only when fj is actually absent. A slow or broken fj keeps its own explanation instead of the shared "install fj or tea" hint.

Probe deadlines, the available | missing status contract and the auth flow are unchanged. Clients render installHint as text, so web, desktop and mobile pick this up without client changes.

Scope and approval

Verification

Focused tests:

  • apps/server/src/sourceControl/SourceControlDiscovery.test.ts: explains a hosting CLI whose version probe failed instead of advising an install covers a timeout, a non-zero exit and an absent executable. It fails on main with expected 'Install slow.' to not include 'Install slow.' and passes on this branch.
  • packages/source-control-forgejo/src/server/ForgejoSourceControlProvider.test.ts: explains a slow fj instead of advising an install when tea is absent fails on main with expected 'tea' to equal 'fj' and passes on this branch.
  • Discovery, registry, Forgejo, GitHub and GitCafe suites pass. vp run check:changed passes.

Runtime, web dev server with a fresh database on Linux, Settings → Source control, after the server's discovery run and Rescan. /usr/bin/gh 2.45.0 is installed; the wrapper is first on PATH:

Not checked: the command palette's clone hint, the publish tooltip and the mobile add-project hint render the same installHint string and were not exercised in a client. The Forgejo slow-fj row was verified by the test only.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 84c172f

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped server discovery bug fix that distinguishes missing CLIs from installed CLIs whose probes time out or fail, with regression tests for each case. Existing successful paths and CLI deadlines remain unchanged, and the Forgejo fallback adjustment is bounded to failed discovery scenarios.

Walkthrough

CLI discovery now distinguishes missing executables from other version-probe failures. Timeouts and nonzero exits receive diagnostic hints instead of installation advice. Forgejo discovery also narrows when it falls back to tea.

Changes: CLI Discovery

Layer / File(s)Summary
Probe failure diagnostics and validation
packages/source-control-core/src/server/discovery.ts, apps/server/src/sourceControl/SourceControlDiscovery.test.ts
Failed probes now report the version command and server PATH guidance, including timeout duration or exit status when available. Missing executables retain the configured installation hint. Tests cover timeout, nonzero exit, and missing-executable cases.
Forgejo CLI fallback and validation
packages/source-control-forgejo/src/server/ForgejoSourceControlProvider.ts, packages/source-control-forgejo/src/server/ForgejoSourceControlProvider.test.ts
Forgejo discovery uses tea when it is available or when fj is missing with the discovery install hint. Other fj failures are returned. A test covers an fj timeout.

Explanation

The description includes the required Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It explains the bug, implementation, linked issue, focused tests, runtime checks, and known verification limits.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes satisfy the coding requirements in issue #10728. probeCli keeps the install hint only for a genuinely missing executable. Timeout, non-zero exit, and other probe failures identify the version command, failure, and PATH-resolved executable. Unavailable CLI authentication details reuse the classified hint. Tests cover timeout, non-zero exit, missing executable, and matching auth detail. Forgejo fallback uses tea only when fj is absent.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes remain within issue #10728. They improve diagnostics for the same source-control CLI probe failure and preserve the existing status, timeout, and authentication flow. The Forgejo fallback change and its test support the same failure classification. No unrelated production behavior or file changes are shown.

Assert the Azure DevOps exit-status diagnostic.

The mock exercises VcsProcessExitError, but the current assertion also passes for a generic failure or a missing provider entry. Assert that the hint contains `az --version` exited with status 1.

Addressed both findings in cc07a0dcd5: unknown-auth detail now uses the classified probe hint, and the existing test asserts Azure’s exact exit-status diagnostic. The new auth-detail assertions fail before the fix; all three focused tests pass afterward. Targeted lint and source-control-core typecheck pass.
