Problem

Cursor skill discovery drops the workspace inventory when ordinary supporting files consume its shared 10,000-entry scan budget. Two project skills, with 11,000 files under the first skill's artifacts directory, leave the sibling undiscoverable and fail the provider probe.

Change

Charge the directory traversal budget only for directories eligible for recursion. Keep file inspection bounded with a separate internal 100,000-entry limit. Nested skills, depth limits, symlink boundaries, and probe error handling retain their existing behavior.

Scope and approval

Fixes #23221 GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/23225 Triaged bug via the automated issue flow: #23225.

Verification

  • vp test run packages/provider-cursor/src/server/skills.test.ts: the regression fails before the fix because b-small is missing; all seven tests pass at b528fd6a84. Coverage includes nested discovery, depth and symlink boundaries, and bounded file inspection.
  • Cursor package typecheck and targeted lint pass. Both independent reviewers returned MERGE for the implementation; current main was merged without changing the Cursor files.
  • Real Linux dev server: fresh workspace discovery fails with scan-budget-exhausted before the fix. Moving only the artifacts out succeeds. At runtime-tested head f88c14035e, the same request with all 11,000 files restored returns both project skills.

The subsequent budget-accounting fix at b528fd6a84 charges skill-file checks to the same inspection limit; its focused test failed at 100,001 calls before the correction and all seven tests pass after it.

No rendering changes; visual fixture matrix is empty. The signed-in Cursor picker and macOS Electron surface could not be verified on this Linux VM without a Cursor account.

Implemented with Claude Opus 5.5 through Claude Code; integrated and verified with GPT-6.1-Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

Independent proof audit

Verdict: SUFFICIENT at head b528fd6a84. Before is main 8d3b061121. All fixtures are synthetic. Every run used an isolated HOME and T3 home under /tmp on Linux ext4 with Node 24.22.1.

New rows (probe result; stat counts come from a wrapper that counts filesystem calls):

Worth knowing: a tree that reaches the new 100,000-entry cap now takes about 5–8 s to fail, instead of about 1 s before. That cost is bounded and applies only to pathological trees.

Verification log
  • Pass 1 (read-only, from the code): the runtime proof in the existing index was at f88c14035e, not the head. Rows R1/R10 at head, R2, R4, R5, R7 and the R10 failure path were uncovered.
  • Capture: all of those rows ran at both SHAs through the package entry point. R10 ran through a real isolated server over WebSocket RPC, with Cursor enabled in an isolated settings file and left unauthenticated.
  • Pass 2: VERDICT: SUFFICIENT. Raw-output SHAs match both commits, driver hashes match, and uploads are byte-identical to the local files.
  • Caveats:
    • During the server runs, the Codex health check installed 5 Codex .system skills into the fake HOME. They show up in the after snapshot and change no outcome.
    • Timings are single runs on a shared VM.
    • For R7, the only record that the directory was chmod 000 is the transcript's command list.
  • Unverified: R3, R6b–d (directory cycle, self-loop and dangling symlinks), R9 (node_modules charge) and R12 have no new captures. The before side was not run through the server with the R4 fixture. As before, the signed-in Cursor picker and the macOS desktop app are unverified.
  • Audited and captured with Claude Opus 5.5 through Claude Code in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at b528fd6

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused Cursor skill-discovery bug fix that decouples directory traversal limits from ordinary file stats, preventing large supporting-file trees from hiding sibling skills while retaining a bounded scan cap. The accompanying changes are test-only regression and safety-limit coverage, with no schema, deployment, security, billing, or authentication impact.

📝 Walkthrough

The Cursor skill scanner now uses a 100,000-operation stat limit for each inspection. It skips node_modules before budget checks and applies the directory-entry budget only to directories within the depth limit. Tests cover discovery and probing of large skill trees.

Changes: Cursor skill scan limits

Layer / File(s)Summary
Track scan budgets
packages/provider-cursor/src/server/skills.ts
The scanner skips node_modules before budget checks. Other entries consume stat budget before inspection. Only directories within the depth limit consume directory-entry budget. Each inspection starts with a 100,000-stat budget.
Test large-tree scans
packages/provider-cursor/src/server/skills.test.ts
Tests verify that discovery and probing find sibling skills when one skill contains 11,000 files. A mocked 200,000-entry tree verifies that probing stops after exactly 100,000 stat calls.

Assert a lower bound that detects the premature cutoff.

The 200,000-entry fixture must prove that scanning proceeds beyond the 20,000-entry cutoff. Keep the upper bound, but do not assert exactly 100,000 child stats. Charging the root SKILL.md stat to the shared budget can reduce the child-stat count.

  • fix(cursor): count skill file checks toward scan limitb528fd6

Fixed the inspection accounting in b528fd6a84: skill-file checks now consume the shared budget. The regression test failed at 100,001 stat calls before the correction and passes with the limit enforced. All seven focused tests, targeted lint, and package typecheck pass.
