Problem

When an agent commits changes on branch A and switches to branch B in the next turn, that turn’s diff includes A-only files as deletions. Files edited on both branches also use A’s contents as the old side instead of B’s starting contents.

Change

Record a validated HEAD reflog cursor with checkpoints. When a turn checks out a different commit, construct its starting tree with the checkout changes applied and retain that baseline as a checkpoint parent. Patch and line-count queries use it only when it belongs to the requested preceding checkpoint. Resets remain visible; older checkpoints or unavailable reflogs retain the existing fallback.

Scope and approval

Fixes #8204

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow: #8204. The change stays in shared server checkpoint capture and diff calculation; web, desktop and mobile consume the same result.

Verification

  • Reproduced on Linux in the real web dev app at ed9b7ca9c5: commit a.txt on A, switch to B in the following turn, write b.txt, then open that turn’s diff. It shows the false a.txt deletion. The original red test failed with expected Set{ b.txt, a.txt } to deeply equal Set{ b.txt }.
  • Focused CheckpointStore and CheckpointDiffQuery tests: 23 passed across 2 files after main integration. They cover same-file baselines, named/detached switches, reset controls, short reads, premature EOF and non-UTF-8 paths. The rerun on final head 26511d7c40 also passed: 23/23 tests across 2 files.
  • Server typecheck and scoped lint over the five fix files: exit 0 before the final branch rebuild. All five fix files are byte-identical after rebuilding on the verified main base.
  • Fresh normal-provider turn through the real server: C2 persisted only shared.txt +1/-1; getTurnDiff(1→2, ignoreWhitespace=false) returned -base / +B edit. No a.txt appears in the summary or patch. Actual RPC transcript and checkpoint provenance, actual patch.

Evidence

These are separate reproduction fixtures, not a matched pixel-comparison pair. The original fixture uses a.txt/b.txt; the candidate adds a shared-file edit to check the old hunk contents and counts too.

Candidate recording: provider turn completion → summary → Open diff → shared-file hunk. Recording began at 02:54:56 UTC; dispatch at 02:55:06; C2 ready at 02:55:36; recording ended at 02:59:08. Rendering environment, fixture commands and provenance: Linux, T3 preview, light appearance, reported CSS viewport 1440×900; saved screenshot raster 1280×800.

The runtime capture is from the earlier integration head ce07f0babe. The final head 26511d7c40 removes an unrelated integration commit; the five checkpoint-fix files are identical. It is not a fresh final-head capture.

Unverified: matching baseline interaction recording, zero/threshold pixel diffs, final-head browser capture, pure-switch empty review, remaining compatibility fixture matrix, Electron, native iOS and Android. Infrastructure stalls prevented the complete capture set; the proof audit does not certify it as complete. No claim of historical checkpoint repair or changed nonadjacent whole-thread diffs.

Models: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1-Sol through T3 Code’s Claude Agent and Codex harnesses.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This fixes branch-switch diff baselines, but it adds a substantial reflog parser and multi-parent checkpoint reconstruction path in the shared server VCS driver. The production behavior and stateful Git interactions warrant human review despite the focused scope and added tests.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request updates Git checkpoint diffs to account for branch switches. It also adds array wildcard support to webhook path lookup and filter matching, with corresponding tests and documentation.

Changes: Branch-Switch Checkpoint Diffs

Layer / File(s)Summary
Capture contract and reflog resolution
apps/server/src/checkpointing/CheckpointStore.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/VcsDriver.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/CheckpointService.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.ts
Checkpoint capture passes the preceding checkpoint reference when the ordinal is greater than zero. Git reads reflog cursors and resolves a turn start against a baseline only when its second parent matches the starting checkpoint.
Branch baselines and diff validation
apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.ts, apps/server/src/checkpointing/CheckpointStore.test.ts
Capture applies branch-switch diffs to the prior checkpoint tree and may add a baseline commit. Diff resolution and authored-path parsing use the updated checkpoint data. Tests cover branch switches, resets, renames, reflog read behavior, and non-UTF-8 filenames.

Webhook Array Wildcards

Layer / File(s)Summary
Wildcard lookup and template rendering
apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/webhookTemplate.ts, apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/webhookTemplate.test.ts, packages/contracts/src/scheduledTask.ts
Template lookup resolves wildcard paths across array elements and omits undefined results. The contract documents array fan-out. Tests check rendered label and reviewer arrays.
Wildcard filter matching
apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/webhookFilter.ts, apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/webhookFilter.test.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/orchestrator/tools.ts, packages/contracts/src/scheduledTask.ts
Filter matching applies operators to scalar elements selected by wildcard paths. The contract and tool description document the matching rules. Tests cover wildcard and non-wildcard comparisons.

Explanation

Issue #8204 requires the latest-turn diff to use the destination branch state after a branch switch. GitVcsDriver.ts records a validated HEAD reflog cursor, constructs a checkout baseline, and uses it only for the matching preceding checkpoint. CheckpointService.ts and CheckpointStore.ts pass the preceding checkpoint reference. CheckpointStore.test.ts verifies named and detached switches, shared-file baselines, reset behavior, short reads, premature EOF, and non-UTF-8 paths. The reported focused tests passed.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description is complete and relevant. It covers the problem, implementation, scope, linked issue, focused verification, runtime evidence, limitations, and models used. The scope section identifies triage through issue #8204, although it does not include a direct maintainer approval comment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The pull request also changes webhook wildcard matching and rendering in apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/webhookFilter.ts, webhookFilter.test.ts, webhookTemplate.ts, and webhookTemplate.test.ts. It changes related documentation in packages/contracts/src/scheduledTask.ts and the schedule_task description in apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/orchestrator/tools.ts. These changes do not implement issue #8204 and are outside the stated checkpoint and diff scope.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated webhook behavior, tests, and documentation changes from this pull request, or link them to a separate active coding issue.

🟠 Major · Evaluate wildcard exists before discarding non-scalar elements. · webhookFilter.ts:39-41

apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/webhookFilter.ts:39-41 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Evaluate wildcard exists before discarding non-scalar elements.

For a request with labels: [{name: "bug"}], the filter {path: "body.issue.labels[]", op: "exists"} fails. scalarText drops the object, so texts.some(...) sees an empty list. The contract says a non-empty wildcard list satisfies exists, and the delivery is incorrectly filtered. Check the resolved list’s length before converting elements to scalar text.

apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/webhookTemplate.ts:108 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve arrays at non-wildcard leaf segments.

For body.groups[].members[].tags, lookup flattens the tags arrays because the remaining path contains members[]. The tags segment has no [], so its array must remain a leaf value. The current result exposes individual tags to matchesWebhookFilter, allowing a scalar filter to match a tag that the path did not select.

Change the resolver to flatten only arrays produced by wildcard traversal. Do not use the presence of any wildcard in the remaining path as a proxy for that result.

The webhook findings refer to the superseded integration head ce07f0babe. The branch was rebuilt against verified main. Current head 26511d7c40 changes exactly five checkpoint/VCS files; the webhook, contract and MCP changes are absent from this PR. Both isolated final reviewers approved that scope. Focused tests on the current head passed 23/23.

CI on 26511d7c40 reports failures in run 39714623085: all eight server shards, Build and Typecheck, and the aggregate Test check. Local focused tests passed 23/23; CI failure causes remain unverified.

GitCafe exposes check metadata but returns no CI runs for this head. Its typed view command rejects numeric provider IDs; the run and job-log API endpoints return HTTP 400 (request IDs 234a01523a6d958eaebc26ddb9ceed69 and c2667ef2c76a66675b9100c507d6bf7a). No source change was made without a confirmed cause.
