Problem

Closing the Add project folder picker, creating a folder outside T3 Code, and reopening the same path shows the old directory listing for up to five minutes. Web and mobile use the same cached browse query.

Change

Rebuild the browse query's stale-while-revalidate wrapper when it mounts again, while retaining the underlying cached listing during the refresh. Only filesystem browsing opts into this behavior. Add a regression test and a small reproducible directory fixture, registered as a directly run script for the unused-code checker.

Scope and approval

Fixes #11476 GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/11476 Triaged bug via the automated issue flow; reported issue. No server, contract, provider, or permission changes.

Verification

Current head includes main merge 745930bf9b and the fixture entry registration. The three runtime/test files are unchanged from the integrated-check revision. Both focused suites pass again (32 tests), and formatting passes on the four original files and the Knip configuration. The scripts-only Knip unused-file check passes after registering the manually invoked fixture.

Historical image pairs include incidental update/CPU notifications, caret and background git-count differences in addition to the folder changes. These are disclosed in the evidence index; no pixel-exact unchanged claim is made.

  • Regression test independently fails on the baseline: expected created-externally, existing, received only existing.
  • Final merged branch: runtime and filesystem suites, 32 passed. Client-runtime typecheck passed. Scoped lint found one existing unused AuthSessionState import; no new lint findings. Diff whitespace check passed.
  • Final branch integrated check in Chromium on Linux, 1280×800, light theme, real dev server and isolated populated state: open /tmp/t3-11476-recovery-check/, close, external mkdir created-externally, reopen; the new folder appears. Web Add project and clone browsing share the changed query; desktop wraps web, native mobile consumes the same query. Native behavior remains unverified.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This is a narrowly scoped client-runtime fix that refreshes cached filesystem listings when a folder picker reopens, with focused regression coverage and development-only fixture changes. The new fixture suppresses multiple static-analysis diagnostics, and an unresolved concrete correctness finding is also supplied, so the change warrants manual review.

Walkthrough

Environment query atoms now support configurable cache retention and revalidation on remount. The filesystem browse query enables remount revalidation. A test checks that a directory added while the picker is unmounted appears after reopening it. A fixture script adds filesystem setup phases for evidence capture.

Changes: Filesystem Browse Revalidation

Layer / File(s)Summary
Query cache behavior
packages/client-runtime/src/state/runtime.ts
Environment query atoms add revalidateOnRemount. This option selects whether the source or wrapper atom retains the idle-TTL cache. The RPC query atom family forwards the option when defined.
Filesystem browse behavior and validation
packages/client-runtime/src/state/filesystem.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/runtime.test.ts, scripts/folder-picker-evidence-fixture.ts, knip.jsonc
The filesystem browse query sets staleTimeMs to zero and enables remount revalidation. A test checks that a directory added while unmounted appears after remount. The fixture script adds filesystem setup phases, and knip.jsonc includes the script in the scripts workspace.

Explanation

The description includes the required Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It explains the bug, implementation, regression coverage, validation results, known limitations, and unverified environments.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #11476 requires the local-folder picker to show the current directory listing after reopening. packages/client-runtime/src/state/filesystem.ts enables zero stale time and remount revalidation for filesystem browsing. packages/client-runtime/src/state/runtime.ts keeps the source cache warm while rebuilding the wrapper on remount. The regression test in packages/client-runtime/src/state/runtime.test.ts verifies that an externally added directory appears with the existing entry. The shared client-runtime atom covers the web and mobile consumers named by the issue.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes support issue #11476. They modify the shared query lifecycle, configure filesystem browsing, add the regression test, and add the directory fixture plus its Knip registration. These changes have a direct connection to the refresh behavior and its verification. No unrelated change is established by the reviewed diff.

Merged current main in 745930bf9b. The webhook files now have no diff against main. CodeRabbit’s object-wildcard exists finding concerns unchanged main code, so it is outside this folder-picker fix; the underlying main behavior is not changed here. Macroscope’s combined webhook scope rationale is likewise stale. The folder-picker test suites pass again: 32 tests. The required fixture is also registered as a directly run Knip entry.

The remount test does not assert the stale listing during the pending refresh.

The test reads only after the scheduled work runs and asserts the final RPC result. A remount implementation that clears ["existing"] while the RPC is pending, then returns ["created-externally", "existing"], would pass. Add a controlled pending RPC and assert that the remount read still exposes ["existing"] before releasing the RPC.

The new regression test checks the refreshed listing, without asserting the intermediate pending state. W3 evidence exercises that state with a held browse response: the cached existing folder remains visible, then created-externally appears after release. Those captures are historical, as labeled in Verification; the relevant runtime and filesystem source is unchanged. A fresh read-only review found no implementation defect requiring a fix. Additional pending-state test coverage is optional.

  • Merge origin/main into fix/issue-11476881e5b4

Merged current main in 881e5b4485. Resolved the Knip entry-list conflict by retaining both main’s browser fixtures and the folder-picker fixture. Runtime implementation is unchanged. Focused tests: 32 passed across two files. Scripts-only Knip, formatting, and diff whitespace checks passed.

On 881e5b4485, client-runtime typecheck passes. Running node scripts/release-smoke.ts locally fails at its temporary workspace install with ERR_PNPM_UNUSED_PATCH for @expo/fingerprint@0.21.5 and expo-network@58.0.3. The smoke script, workspace manifest, and mobile manifest have no diff against the merged main revision; this failure is outside the folder-picker change. This is a local reproduction, not a diagnosis from CI logs: GitCafe reports no CI runs for this head, so the Build and Typecheck failure details remain unavailable through the required forge path. Macroscope’s rebase note reports no code changes and retains its human-approval requirement.

Assert the cached listing while the refresh is pending.

createEnvironmentQueryAtomFamily documents that the cached value remains visible during revalidation. This test does not check that state. Its browse response completes immediately, so an implementation that clears the cached listing during revalidation can still pass.

Hold the remount response pending, assert existing with waiting: true, then release the response and retain the final refreshed-list assertion.

The latest CodeRabbit nitpick repeats the pending-refresh coverage suggestion already dispositioned above; it identifies no new implementation failure. The runtime source is unchanged, and W3 demonstrates cached entries while the response is held. The new thread-transfer report passes every ceiling with zero measured impact. The aggregate Check failure follows the previously reported CI failures; the local smoke reproduction and missing GitCafe run logs remain documented above.

Merged current main in b2e9f462e8, retaining its Knip configuration and this fixture entry. The required changed-file check also found four Effect diagnostics in the standalone Node fixture. a31e704420 applies the same diagnostic opt-outs used by standalone scripts. vp run check:changed now exits successfully: formatting, lint, both Knip passes, typecheck across affected packages/dependents, and 32 tests pass. Runtime implementation is unchanged. Pushed to the existing GitHub branch for CI.
