Problem

With OpenCode 1.x, steering a running turn changes how the rest of that turn runs. Say you pick a custom primary agent and a reasoning variant, start a turn, then steer it. After the steer, OpenCode runs the remaining steps with its default build agent, with no reasoning variant, and without T3's system instructions. T3's MCP and runtime instructions are gone until the next turn. A turn started in Plan mode (sent through the API; the composer hides the Plan toggle for OpenCode 1.x) continues as build, which may edit files.

The cause is in packages/provider-opencode/src/server/adapter.ts. startTurn sends agent, variant and system with the prompt. steerTurn sends only sessionID, messageID, model and parts. OpenCode stores these fields on each user message and runs every later step with the latest user message's agent and system prompt. When agent is missing, it falls back to the default agent (createUserMessage in OpenCode's session/prompt.ts).

To reproduce on main: choose an OpenCode agent other than Build, send a message, steer while it runs, and look at the steer's user message in the OpenCode session. It has agent: "build" and no system.

Change

  • New turnPromptOptions(turn) closure in the adapter builds agent, variant and system from the active turn's modelSelection and runtimePolicy. This is the same logic startTurn had inline.
  • startTurn and steerTurn both spread it into the promptAsync payload, so a steer repeats the turn's settings.

startTurn's payload is unchanged. One new test in adapter.test.ts uses the existing makeOpenCodeRuntimeHarness. The harness gains an optional argument for model options and interaction mode, so the test can start a Plan-mode turn with the high variant. The test starts that turn, steers it and checks that the steer payload carries the same agent, variant and system as the start payload.

Scope and approval

No issue was filed. The fix is small and the bug is plain: the steer payload is missing three fields the turn already set. The change touches only the OpenCode 1.x adapter and its test. It changes no settings, UI or other providers.

Verification

  • vp test run src/server/adapter.test.ts in packages/provider-opencode: the new test fails on main with agent, variant and system all undefined in the steer payload. It passes on this branch. The full file passes with 32 tests.
  • pnpm run typecheck in packages/provider-opencode passes. vp lint and vp fmt --check on both changed files report nothing new.
  • Real app, production builds of main and this branch on Linux. T3 ran the real OpenCode 1.19.3 server against a local stub model (no credentials). The stub logs each request and replies with what it received. I picked a custom primary agent "Docs" with the High variant, sent a message, steered it with the queued message's Steer button, then let the first step finish.

The screenshots show the stub's replies. On main, request 2 (after the steer) has no T3 instructions, no Docs agent prompt and no reasoning_effort.

Main: after the steer, the stub reports T3 instructions missing, Docs agent prompt missing, reasoning_effort not sent

On this branch, request 2 matches request 1.

This branch: after the steer, the stub reports T3 instructions present, Docs agent prompt present, reasoning_effort high

The same check against the OpenCode 1.19.3 HTTP API, with T3's Plan-mode payloads sent by hand. On main's steer payload, OpenCode stores the steer as agent=build and the next step loses the plan-mode reminder.

Regression test failing on main

Regression test passing on this branch

Not checked:

  • T3's composer hides the Plan toggle for OpenCode 1.x. The Plan path was therefore checked through the API probe and the unit test, not the UI.
  • Real models. Only the stub model ran.
  • The OpenCode 2 adapter in packages/provider-opencode/src/server/v2, which is a separate code path.
  • macOS and Windows. The change is server code with no platform branches.

Prior PRs

None for this bug. #6530 by @NeilTheFisher (closed) changed when OpenCode steers are delivered, not their payload. Open #21610 by @juliusmarminge and #21458 by @maria-rcks edit nearby steerTurn lines, but not the payload fields. Their adapter.ts hunks still apply cleanly on this branch. Draft #16528 by @juliusmarminge and #15752 by @Tr1Fecta-7 each add one argument to the buildRuntimeInstructions call this PR moves into turnPromptOptions, so whichever merges second moves that one line.

Walkthrough

Initial and steering prompts now use the same options derived from the active turn. The adapter test harness supports model options and interaction modes, and a test checks that steering receives the same agent, variant, and system instructions as startup.

Changes: OpenCode prompt options

The adapter derives the agent, variant, and system prompt from the active turn and applies them to initial and steering prompts. The test harness accepts model options and an interaction mode. A test checks that steering receives the same options as startup.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 33756ef

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, self-contained OpenCode adapter bug fix that preserves the turn’s agent, reasoning variant, and system instructions when steering. Existing start-turn behavior is unchanged, and a regression test covers the new steer payload behavior.

Verified in a real dev environment

Verified the unchanged head bb6966f47064cd7900b633ec012608ad30f9f85b on Linux with the dev web client, Playwright from the repo dependencies, Google Chrome, and real OpenCode 1.19.5 using gpt-6.1-sol through the local model proxy. No stub model, mocks, fixtures, or seeded database. Created a project pointing at a real git repository and all threads through the app.

Reproduced on github/main at ce9e016406: select the custom Verifier primary agent and High reasoning, start a turn that runs sleep 20, then click Steer. The native OpenCode messages and subsequent assistant step show the agent changing to Build, the reasoning variant disappearing, and the 4,883-character T3 system prompt disappearing. Generation completed without the custom agent marker.

On this PR, the same prompt and steer completed successfully. A second steer during the tool call also worked. All three user messages retained Verifier and byte-identical system instructions. Both assistant steps retained variant=high; the final response included both steering markers and the custom agent marker.

Read-only native session inspection after the actual UI interactions:

2main: start agent=verifier system=4883; assistant variant=high
3main: steer agent=build system=0; next assistant variant=absent
4PR: start + steer + second steer agent=verifier system=4883 (identical)
5PR: both assistant steps agent=verifier variant=high
6PR: STEERING_BASELINE_DONE STEER_RECEIVED SECOND_STEER_RECEIVED VERIFIER_AGENT_ACTIVE

Nearby behavior: changed the next turn to Build/Low, ran pwd, and received NORMAL_FOLLOWUP_OK. Native messages confirmed Build/Low, so prior settings do not stick across turns. Separate Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns ran pwd and returned CODEX_BASELINE_OK on both main and the PR.

Native iOS/Android and Electron clients, macOS/Windows, tunnel/relay connections, and OpenCode 2 were not exercised on this Linux web run. Plan-mode fallback passed the existing adapter regression test; the real-app check used an explicitly selected custom agent because the OpenCode 1.x composer hides Plan mode. External model services beyond the local proxy were not exercised.

Nitpick Add an explicit custom-agent case to the steering regression test.

Add an explicit custom-agent case to the steering regression test.

The test sets no agent option. It sets interactionMode: "plan", so both start and steer assert agent === "plan" through the mode fallback. A steer that drops an explicitly selected agent, such as the Docs agent, would still produce "plan" and pass the test. The explicit-agent branch has no regression coverage. The current production code handles this branch correctly. This is a coverage gap, not a current failure.
