Problem

On macOS, t3 update rewrites the background service's launch agent so ProgramArguments starts the new runtime, but its PATH still names the previous runtime's directory. t3 run by the service, and in every agent shell, terminal and tool it starts, resolves to the build the update just replaced. Once that version is pruned, the entry points at a directory that no longer exists. @boundsj reported this in #17532 with plist lines from two machines: ProgramArguments on ...versions/0.0.46-nightly.20261009.2873/t3, PATH ending in ...versions/0.0.46-nightly.20261006.2735.

The cause is in BootService.make (apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.ts). The launch agent PATH is the installer's PATH plus path.dirname(host.execPath). During t3 update, host is the old CLI doing the update (cli/update.ts passes only cliVersion: targetVersion), so the old directory goes in. When t3 update runs from a terminal T3 started, its PATH comes from the plist and already names the current runtime, which is copied over too. program uses the runtime being installed, so the two disagree.

Change

When make builds the launch agent PATH, any entry inside this T3 home's runtime/versions/ is swapped for the directory of the runtime being installed. Order and de-duplication stay the same. It reuses pinnedRuntimeVersionsDir and launcherOwnsVersionsDir from pinnedRuntime.ts, the check t3 update already uses for its t3 launchers. Other entries, including another T3 home's runtimes, are untouched. The systemd unit sets no PATH, so Linux is unaffected.

status still ignores PATH when it compares the installed plist, so this doesn't change when a plist counts as current. An existing plist gets the right PATH the next time an update or t3 service install rewrites it.

Scope and approval

Fixes #17532, a bug report with repros from two machines. The maintainer triage comment (https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/17532#issuecomment-6328272501) asked whether it still happens on current nightly. The code path is unchanged on current main, and the new test reproduces it there. One expression in make plus one test. No UI, protocol or contract change, so there is nothing to screenshot.

Verification

New test in bootService.test.ts, "puts the runtime an update installs on the launch agent PATH". It installs 1.2.4 on macOS with the 1.2.3 runtime as the host executable and the 1.2.3 directory in the installer PATH, which covers both routes above. It checks that the plist PATH names the 1.2.4 directory in that slot. The harness gained an optional host executable argument for this.

sh
1cd apps/server && vp test run src/cloud/bootService.test.ts
  • Main's bootService.ts (bd6940beab) with the new test: 1 failed, 33 passed. ProgramArguments names versions/1.2.4/t3, the plist PATH names versions/1.2.3.
  • This branch: 34 passed, including the existing launch agent PATH cases.

The new test failing on main:

bootService test failing on main: the plist PATH names runtime 1.2.3 while the program is 1.2.4

All 34 bootService tests passing on this branch, launch agent cases shown:

bootService launch agent tests passing on this branch, 34 of 34

vp lint and vp fmt --check on both changed files are clean. apps/server typecheck exits 0 with no diagnostics in the changed files.

Not checked:

  • A real launchd run of t3 update between two nightlies. t3 update has no version flag, so this needs an older nightly served from a release mirror.
  • Plists written before this fix stay stale until an update or t3 service install rewrites them. status stays PATH-blind on purpose.
  • Client-driven server updates. On main they don't rewrite the plist, so its program and PATH both keep the installing runtime. #19652 repoints only the program on that route and keeps the plist PATH, so that route would need the same swap once it lands.
  • A T3 home reached through a symlink. An entry that uses the resolved path is not swapped; launcher repointing checks both forms, this change checks only the configured one.

Prior PRs

  • #8173 (@t3dotgg) added the launch agent PATH and the host.execPath entry. This keeps both and only swaps the runtime directory.
  • #19652 (@Marve10s) repoints the program after remote updates and leaves PATH alone. #14875 (@JonasFocus) moves the t3 symlink after a self-update. Both touch bootService.ts for other causes, and neither changes how PATH is built.
  • Thanks to @boundsj for the report, the second-machine data and the pointer to environmentPath.

📝 Walkthrough

The boot service now replaces PATH entries owned by the pinned runtime versions directory with the pinned runtime’s version directory. A macOS regression test checks the generated launch-agent PATH after a runtime update.

Changes: Runtime PATH correction

Layer / File(s)Summary
Pinned runtime PATH generation and regression coverage
apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.ts, apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.test.ts
The service calculates pinned runtime paths before building its environment PATH. It replaces retained paths owned by the pinned versions directory with the pinned runtime’s version directory. The test helper accepts a configurable host executable path, and a macOS regression test checks the generated PATH.

Explanation

Issue #17532 requires the macOS launch agent to use the runtime installed by an update. bootService.make now replaces PATH entries inside this T3 home’s runtime/versions/ directory with runtimePaths.versionDir. It preserves other entries and de-duplicates the result. The new regression test covers an update from 1.2.3 to 1.2.4 and verifies the generated plist PATH. The issue’s stable shim is a preference, not a required implementation. Current client-driven updates do not rewrite the plist, so the reviewed behavior does not establish a second mismatch path.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #17532. Production code changes only launch-agent PATH construction and reuse existing pinned-runtime path helpers. Test changes add the host executable input and a regression case for the stale runtime path. No unrelated UI, protocol, Linux unit, or contract changes are present.

Reject the previous runtime directory explicitly.

The positive toContain check can pass if the expected PATH is followed by the old previous directory. Add a negative assertion so the regression test checks that the old runtime directory is absent.

Verified in a real dev environment

no changed runtime behavior could be verified on this linux boat vm. result: unverifiable, not verified by passing ci.

inspected the description, discussion, reviews, both changed files, and exact head 979aa50c77bb71f7a1e34dc7f4c4396e59f9f27d. the pr is open and its single commit has no author matching either maintainer stop condition. git.cafe mirror: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/23249.

environment transcript:

text
1$ timeout 20 uname -s
2Linux
3$ timeout 20 bash -c 'command -v launchctl'
4(no output; exit 1)

source inspection shows the changed environmentPath is passed only to the darwin launchd manager; linux selects systemd without it. users reach this through t3 update rewriting an installed service or t3 service install. a foreground dev server or a codex turn on linux would not exercise the changed launch-agent environment.

no code changes, commits, pushes, service changes, or dev servers were made. no screenshots or recordings were captured because the changed behavior could not run here. the reported ci snapshot has 32 successful checks, 0 failing and 0 pending; those are not runtime proof.

Not verified

the original failure on main, the fix on this head, and neighboring service behavior all remain unverified. main/pr dependency installs, dev-server startup, browser flows and provider turns were not performed because this vm cannot execute macos launchd. no mocked darwin platform or generated-plist-only check was substituted for the requested real path.

verification requires a macos host: install an older runtime as a launch agent, run the update from its terminal with the old runtime directory in PATH, and inspect the rewritten plist. confirm ProgramArguments and PATH resolve the new runtime, then start a real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn through the client and check command -v t3 and its version in the agent shell and terminal. repeat after pruning the old runtime. also check service restart/status and preservation of unrelated PATH entries, including another t3 home's runtime. native mobile, windows, and remote-update behavior were not exercised.
