Problem

In long timelines, removing the final row while an animated scrollToEnd is running can leave LegendList pointing past the end of the data. Measuring that missing target resets total content height to one estimated row, making the timeline jump far up.

Reproduced on main with the reporter's standalone dependency fixture served by the real web dev server: 150 rows of 900px, estimate 90px, MVCP enabled, animated end scroll followed by removing the final row.

Change

Skip the MVCP target-size correction when the target index no longer resolves to a row. Apply the same null guard to all six LegendList 3.3.5 React and React Native bundles in the existing dependency patch. Add a regression test and a reusable synthetic browser fixture.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/13706

GitCafe identity is explicit; the corresponding GitHub issue number was not exposed by GitCafe metadata, so no GitHub number is assumed.

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow; GitCafe mirror #13706. This corrects invalid-target measurement without changing scrolling policy or upgrading the dependency.

Verification

Current head c81e17ac40 registers the manual harness entry points with Knip and uses stdout for materializer output. All 14 focused tests, scripts typecheck, scoped Knip, targeted lint/formatting, and materializer smoke pass. Runtime guards are unchanged; remote CI for this push is pending.

Integration commit 02a225fbc5 merges main 8acbefefc5. Conflict resolution preserves upstream's complete dependency patch and reapplies only our six null-target guards; the lockfile changes only the patch hash relative to that main. Frozen-lockfile installation passed and the focused suite passed 14/14. git diff --check origin/main passed.

Capture limitation after updating main: recordings below retain their actual historical SHAs. They prove A1 on the earlier dependency patch; they have not been recaptured against upstream's newer list patch. The fixture, materializer and regression test are unchanged; current runtime proof is the focused test, not a new browser capture.

Final review round: Claude Opus 5.5 returned MERGE; GPT-6.1-Sol returned NEEDS_JULIUS for disclosed verification gaps, with no confirmed code defect. This is a maintainer handoff, not an all-surface merge-readiness claim.

Proof audit: A1 passed, including an independent exact pixel-match rebuild. The overall matrix verdict is INSUFFICIENT for A2, C1, C2, P1–P4, N1, D1 and U1; this PR is for maintainer review with those gaps disclosed. Full audit. Independent rebuilt still, pixel comparison, rebuild recording.

  • Red: all four new bundle cases failed with total size 90, expected 134100; the ten existing tests passed.
  • Green: vp test run scripts/legend-list-initial-reveal.test.ts passed all 14 cases at the final fixture head (48.28s). Frozen-lockfile install succeeded. Focused lint passed.
  • Real web client, Linux Chromium, 1280×800: short and long Claude replies on main did not reproduce the product send timing. A post-fix short reply also stayed at the end (final end distance 0.5px), including a CPU stall. These are smoke checks, separate from the positive dependency-race reproduction.

Evidence: complete index, environment, hashes, timing traces, commands and matrix disposition, fixture matrix.

This is an isolated harness of the actual installed dependency, served by vp run dev, because the precise race was not induced through product sends. Both revisions use the same committed synthetic fixture, public size warm-up and driver. Before = b5a226e49c; after/fixture = e84990bae5. Linux Chromium 154, DPR 2, zoom 1, 16px/20px monospace, reduced motion off, fixed displayed date. Wide layout is 1440×900 CSS; Browser exports its stills at 1280×800 and video at 2880×1800. Narrow layout is 390×900 CSS, with 780×1800 stills/video. No manual crop or masking.

All four ready pairs have zero changed pixels at threshold 0. Settled differences are visible row identity/position and the scroll/end-distance readout; numeric changed-pixel metrics and raw 1× differences are in the index. These harness captures establish the null-target race, not every product caller or native runtime.

A2's actual size-only callback remains unverified; C1's surviving-target resize is inconclusive. C2 has partial unchanged-path controls. Product replay/navigation/nested-list/catalog rows and native platforms remain unverified as listed in the report. No broader coverage is claimed.

Unverified: native Electron desktop, Windows, iOS and Android runtime behavior; 390px browser evidence is web only. Additional matrix gaps are listed in the evidence report. No merge or auto-land requested.

Implemented by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code; triage, fixtures and evidence coordinated by GPT-6.1-Sol in the Codex harness through T3 Code. Reviewed by GPT-6.1-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5.

Evidence

Final-head proof: before 8acbefefc5, after c81e17ac40. Independent final audit: SUFFICIENT for the narrowed matrix, including labeled synthetic client replay; this is not merge readiness. Matrix, capture index, supplemental index.

What else changed visibly: intended failed-vs-correct row/position,stripes/borders,and offset/end-distance readout; narrow readout wraps/clips in the fixture. All fresh ready pairs are pixel-identical. Historical/current font raster differs; the independent rebuild matches the current image exactly. No unexplained product style change found.

Verification log
  • Proof audit: initial gaps led to additional captures; final independent audit closes every narrowed row. Prior code-review verdicts remain historical; no new implementation review claimed.
  • Focused tests rerun at final head:14→14 in scripts/legend-list-initial-reveal.test.ts, all pass; no tests or source changed. git diff --check passed.
  • CI snapshot:11successful,0pending,0failing; newer-main merge conflict remains. No CI polling, watch, branch update or merge.
  • Limits/unverified behavior: synthetic client replay proves real client rendering/follow, not provider/server lifecycle emission; citation uses the actual helper/router, not a citation-link click; reduced motion uses a query shim, not OS integration. R3 retains the equal preexisting100px end gap. No required surface remains without accepted proof.
  • Supplemental report documents traces/scripts and failed attempts. Corrected manifest repairs the derived W4montage checksum; raw recordings unchanged.
  • Evidence and independent proof audits: GPT-6.1-Sol through Codex/T3 Code, using test-t3-app and ghdrop.
  • Merge with main (Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Code via T3 Code): merged main 8d3b061121 in 927a628e6c. Main's #23315 layout-pass cap was kept whole, and this PR's six prepareMVCP null-target hunks were reapplied unchanged. The only conflicts were the six bundle index blob-hash lines; they were set to git hash-object of the real post-images. The hunks don't overlap: the cap is in ContainerLayoutCoordinator, the guard is in prepareMVCP. The patch applies cleanly to pristine 3.3.5. pnpm install regenerated the lockfile patch hash with no patch failure, and the lockfile differs from main only by that hash. Installed react.js/react.mjs contain both fixes; the four react-native* bundles contain the guard.
  • Tests after merge: scripts/legend-list-initial-reveal.test.ts passed 14/14. #23315's apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx passed 10/10 on the second run; the first run failed to connect to Chromium within the default timeout on a loaded VM, so it was rerun with --browser.connectTimeout=300000. vp run check:changed passed format, lint, knip, typecheck (32 packages) and test.
  • Behaviour for this PR's code paths is unchanged by the merge: the prepareMVCP hunks are byte-identical, and only main's hunks were added. The evidence above was captured before the merge and was not recaptured.
  • Review round on the merged diff: Claude Sonnet 5.5 returned VERDICT: MERGE: no defect, and both fixes are intact and independent. Claude Opus 5.5 returned VERDICT: FIX_FIRST on scope only: it found no defect, confirmed the cap is intact, and recommended removing the manual repro harness (scripts/fixtures/issue-13706/, scripts/materialize-issue-13706.ts, knip entries) as an uncommitted-work-artifact concern. That harness is this PR's intended reproduction fixture, so it was left for a maintainer decision. No second round was run. Neither reviewer found auth, permissions, modes, sandboxing, trust or MCP changes.

📝 Walkthrough

The patch adds a non-null target ID check to MVCP item-size adjustments across package builds. It also adds a browser reproduction fixture, a regression test, and tooling to materialize the fixture.

Changes: LegendList scroll behavior

Layer / File(s)Summary
MVCP target-size condition
patches/@legendapp__list@3.3.5.patch
MVCP item-size adjustment now requires both a non-null target ID and a positive scrolling view position across the patched package builds.
End-scroll reproduction and regression test
scripts/fixtures/issue-13706/repro.tsx, scripts/legend-list-initial-reveal.test.ts, scripts/materialize-issue-13706.ts, knip.jsonc
The fixture records list and DOM state while rows change, then reports whether scrolling stabilizes. The test removes the final row during an in-flight scrollToEnd and checks total size. The materializer copies the fixture and writes an HTML harness. Knip lists the fixture and materializer as entry points.

Merged current main in 02a225fbc5, preserving the upstream dependency patch and all six null-target guards. Frozen-lockfile installation and all 14 focused tests pass. The verification section now explicitly says the historical recordings do not cover the newly merged upstream list patch. patches/@legendapp__list@3.3.5.patch:1946-1965 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reset animatedDelta when size animation is bypassed.

itemLayoutAnimation also accepts a LayoutAnimationFunction, not only a builder with getAnimationAndConfig. If the prop changes from a builder to a supported function during an active resize, hasItemLayoutAnimation stays true and the wrapper remains mounted. canAnimate then becomes false, but both fallback branches update only baseSize. The animated style can therefore keep rendering logicalSize + animatedDelta.

Reset the delta in both fallback branches.

Exercise both web bundles in the regression test.

The test loads the bundle selected by createScrollToEndList(bundle), but it covers only four of the six patched bundles. Add react-native.web.js and react-native.web.mjs; otherwise either bundle can retain the 90px collapse while the existing cases pass.

Exercise the React Native Web bundles in this regression matrix.

@legendapp/list/react-native resolves to react-native.web.js and react-native.web.mjs for browsers. The current matrix covers only four of the six patched bundles. A regression in either React Native Web bundle can therefore pass this test.
