Problem

Sending to a second Claude instance with separate native history left the first instance's session and process alive after the handoff. Reproduced on Linux using the real web client and Claude 2.1.303: B answered while A remained bound and no detach effect was queued.

Change

Use the existing switch plan's release list for immediate sends. Before detaching, probe the old runtime for background work, including Claude's native subagents even when the projected roster is empty. Refuse the send while work remains; after completion, retrying releases A and starts B. Shared sessions retain per-thread checks.

Scope and approval

Fixes #20343 GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/20343 Triaged bug via the automated issue flow: #20343. This addresses immediate-send session cleanup and preserves running background work. Broader lifecycle guards remain tracked in #16000.

Verification

  • Regression failed before implementation: expected only B's session after handoff, received A and B. The final regression also observes actual runtime scope closure; dropping only the detach effect makes that assertion fail.
  • After merging main at ed9b7ca9c5, the provider-switch integration and switch-service suites passed 41/41 on b94200d73c. Independent reviews also passed the focused suites; both returned MERGE and proof audit returned SUFFICIENT.
  • Runtime captures are from ccbaab5a84; merging main changed no fix files. The PR diff remains the two reviewed files.
  • Scoped server typecheck passed; targeted formatting and lint passed with one preexisting unused-variable warning.
  • Real web/server/Claude verification: a send to B is refused while A's native background task runs, preserving A and the unsent message. A completes its marker; retry produces B's answer, a successful detach effect, and A's process exit.

Proof index, regression proof, current controls.

Visible-render matrix is empty: server-only proof uses regression tests and runtime transcripts. The baseline delayed marker was interrupted by a dev watcher restart; no delayed-write claim relies on it. Desktop and mobile were not separately exercised; no client or wire contract changed. Other providers' native runtimes were not exercised.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 4f08ecd

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Provider switches now release previous sessions selected by the existing transition policy. Background-work probes block switching when agents or commands are still running, limiting the risk of interrupting ongoing work.

Walkthrough

Provider-switch dispatch checks sessions scheduled for release for pending background work. It rejects the switch if work remains or a probe fails. When the switch proceeds, it detaches the sessions selected by the switch plan.

Explanation

The description includes the required Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It provides reproduction details, linked issue context, focused test results, runtime evidence, limitations, and tool information.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Direct issue #20343 has coding requirements. The immediate send path now uses releaseProviderSessionIds from the provider switch plan. It probes sessions for pending background work before commit, including session-wide native work and per-thread work for shared sessions. A positive or failed probe rejects the switch without state changes. A successful retry emits detach events and effects, which releases the old session and process. ProviderSwitch.integration.test.ts covers the separate-history Claude switch, refusal while background work runs, unchanged state on refusal, and successful retry. The issue's suggested idle-activity guard and queued-run work are outside this fix and remain associated with #16000.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #20343. Orchestrator.ts fixes immediate-send release-list handling and adds the required background-work refusal guard. ProviderSwitch.integration.test.ts adds adapter instrumentation and regression coverage for session closure, refusal, and retry. The test change that removes an explicit detach verifies the same release-list behavior. No unrelated provider, client, wire-contract, idle-timeout, or queued-run changes appear in the supplied two-file scope.

Confirmed the queued-run background-work gap is preexisting: startNextQueuedRun and its failure wrapper are unchanged from the merge base. This PR fixes immediate sends ignoring the release list and guards the newly enabled detachment. Queue failure/retry behavior stays with the lifecycle follow-up in #16000.

Fresh reviews by GPT-6.1-sol and Claude Opus 5.5 found no introduced blocker. At b94200d73c, the focused provider-switch integration and switch-service suites passed 41/41 again. No source changes.

Shorten this comment to four lines or fewer. It fails the CI lint step.

The t3code/no-low-value-comments rule fails vp check on the five-line comment at Lines 6033-6037. The rule keeps the constraint and drops the background. The constraint here is that Claude's native subagents are visible only to the session-wide probe, and that shared sessions are probed per thread.

✅ Addressed in commit 4f08ecd

Synced from GitHub

I'm working on a PR to improve the multi-account Claude UX (signing in and reconnecting each Claude instance from the app, see #28740), and I ran into this bug while working on it. Switching a thread to a second Claude account is exactly this case (#20343). I reproduced it and validated this fix.

Repro on main (47f2c8d29e): new case in ProviderSwitch.integration.test.ts: a thread on claudeAgent, an immediate send to claude-second-account (no shared continuation key), then drain the worker. It fails: providerSessions is ["claudeAgent", "claude-second-account"], so the old Claude process stays attached.

This PR (17c8b58fa6) merged onto current main:

  • the repro, both new cases, and the ProviderSwitchService + ProviderSessionManager suites pass (101/101);
  • the #27206 test (direct send Codex→Claude→Codex) also passes on top of this PR, so this PR covers that case too, with the background-work guard that #27206 lacks.

The only blocker I hit: Lint fails on t3code(no-low-value-comments) for the 5-line comment above the background-work probe loop. Trimming it to 4 lines or fewer should turn CI green.

Add multi-session coverage to the provider handoff test.

Create two live source-provider sessions before the switch, then assert that both planned session IDs receive detach effects or appear in closedSessions. The current fixture has only one source session, so an implementation that detaches only the active session can still pass.
