Problem

Importing a Claude Code terminal session and sending its first follow-up fails with “Session ID … is already in use.” Reproduced on Linux with Claude Code 2.1.303 through the real web dev server: import a terminal conversation from the welcome wizard, then send one follow-up; only resending succeeds.

Change

Use the existing transcript scan to distinguish an existing conversation from an empty or missing transcript. When loading a conversation, record its native session as opened so the existing turn-start logic uses resume on its first T3 turn. Fresh sessions retain their existing creation behavior.

Scope and approval

Fixes #15243 GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/15243 Triaged bug via the automated issue flow; #15243. This focused Claude adapter fix restores the existing import workflow and adds one regression test.

Verification

 • vp test run src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.test.ts from apps/server: 230 passed.
 • Scoped server tsc-rs --noEmit: passed, suggestions only. Targeted lint: no errors; existing unused layer warning outside the diff. Formatting passed.
 • Final-fixture baseline red proof: the imported-session test fails against the unchanged baseline adapter because resume is undefined.
 • Two isolated code reviewers returned MERGE; the independent proof audit returned SUFFICIENT (four focused tests independently passed). No authentication, permission, mode, sandbox, or MCP surface changes.

Evidence (server-only exception; matrix: zero visual rows):

ScenarioBeforeAfter
Imported Claude session, first follow-upRuntime transcript, b5a226e: uses sessionId, fails, resend succeedsRuntime transcript, a1bf172: uses original resume; first follow-up returns the remembered marker apricot on attempt 1
Later turn and server restartRetry resumes successfullySame after transcript: continued, then restarted after restart; all three turns completed on attempt 1

Integrated current main with merge commit e8fb198. The adapter and regression fixture are byte-identical to the reviewed and runtime-verified a1bf172; focused tests rerun after integration: 230 passed.

Environment: Linux, Claude Code 2.1.303, isolated T3 home, real web dev server and T3 Browser panel. Baseline used populated copied state; fixed-head import used an empty isolated home. No rendering paths changed. Desktop, mobile, macOS, and Windows runtime behavior were not independently exercised.

Implemented and reviewed with Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1-Sol through T3 Code’s Claude Code and Codex harnesses.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 9868f5e

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Imported Claude conversations now use the existing resume path on their first T3 turn. Empty-session rejection and existing tool permissions remain unchanged, keeping the change limited to session continuation.

Walkthrough

The Claude adapter now distinguishes conversation, empty, and missing transcripts when resuming native sessions. A test verifies that an imported native session resumes on its first T3 turn without allocating a new session ID.

Changes: Claude native-session resume

Layer / File(s)Summary
Classify Claude transcript state
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts
Transcript inspection returns conversation when it finds conversation entries, empty when transcript files exist without conversation entries, and missing when no transcript file exists.

For non-live native threads, the adapter rejects empty transcripts and marks conversations as opened. The test verifies that the first T3 turn resumes an imported session and leaves sessionId unset.

Unreadable transcript copies can still prevent an imported session from resuming, but that failure predates this change. No new merge-blocking risk was identified.

Explanation

Issue [#15243] requires the first follow-up for an imported Claude session to use resume: <sessionId> and run successfully. The reviewed changes classify the transcript as conversation, empty, or missing. For an imported conversation, resumeThread records the native session as opened. Existing query startup then selects resume instead of sessionId. The regression test covers a strong imported native reference with no T3 provider turns. The reported focused test run passed with 230 tests.

Continue scanning after unreadable transcript copies.

For a non-live native thread, an unreadable copy currently fails claudeTranscriptState before later copies are checked. resumeThread maps that failure to "missing", so a later readable conversation cannot mark the imported session as opened. The first turn then does not use resume.

Continue after an unreadable copy and retain an unreadable flag. Return "missing" when no conversation is found and any copy was unreadable. Return "conversation" when a later readable copy contains a conversation. This preserves the existing fallback.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Fixed in 9868f5e5d9a: claudeTranscriptState now skips an unreadable copy and keeps scanning, returns conversation if a later copy has one, and returns missing (not empty) when any copy was unreadable. The import test now includes an unreadable copy in another project dir and fails on the previous head.

@juliusmarminge The supplied code confirms the fix. claudeTranscriptState continues after a copy read fails and returns "conversation" if a later copy contains one. If no conversation is found, an unreadable copy makes the result "missing", not "empty". This addresses the finding.
