fix(server): import compressed Codex rollouts#23173
Problem
Onboarding silently omits Codex conversations stored only in rollout-*.jsonl.zst. On current main, a fresh plain rollout appeared in /welcome while the equivalent compressed-only project did not; manually decompressing it made it appear.
Change
Discover compressed Codex rollouts and stream their decompressed bytes through the existing metadata and history readers. Preserve file identity checks and import deduplication, apply the existing byte limits to expanded data, and strip both suffixes for fallback session IDs. The intended 30-day mtime window is unchanged.
Scope and approval
Fixes #21755
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. Accepted compressed-rollout bug; the maintainer explicitly excluded changing the 30-day window.
Verification
- Regression proof: red output, 2 failed / 53 passed before the fix; green output, 55 / 55 passed at 6053165ce2, after merging main.
- Scoped lint and formatting passed. Server typecheck passed without errors.
- Runtime transcript: real web dev server with isolated state and synthetic Codex-format fixtures. After the fix, the compressed-only project is discovered and importing it displays its user and assistant messages. Plain-file control still imports. No provider turn submitted.
- Independent GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 reviews both returned MERGE.
- Evidence index, raw logs, fixtures and revision manifest. Proof matrix: empty under the server-only exception; no rendering code changes. The screenshots below supplement the runtime proof, not pixel-comparison evidence.
| Evidence | Before — 70e5e384da | After — 1b9d71afe4 |
|---|---|---|
| Onboarding discovery, Linux Chrome 154, 1280×800 CSS pixels, DPR 2, light, no emulation | Before: only plain-project is discovered | After: compressed-project is also discovered |
The scanner and its tests are byte-for-byte unchanged between the app-verified commit and final merge head. Visible differences are the recovered project/conversation, elapsed labels and unrelated seeded history activity; no claim of zero pixel change.
Unverified: desktop/Electron, macOS and Windows execution; actual long-lived Codex-produced compressed rollouts. The fixture uses Node zstd compression. The isolated fixture home has no Codex login; the client warning concerns future provider turns and did not prevent history import.
Models: Claude Opus 5.5 through the Claude Code harness; GPT-6.1 Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

Approvability
Verdict: Approved at 6053165
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized server-side fix that streams existing Codex .jsonl.zst rollouts through the current scanner/import pipeline while preserving resource limits and plain-file behavior. Regression tests cover compressed discovery and import, with no schema, deployment, security, billing, or default changes.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 60531
Compressed Codex rollouts that contain more than one Zstandard frame might import only partially. The single-frame fixture would not catch this, so add a multi-frame test, and switch to a frame-continuing decoder if it fails, before relying on this for long-lived rollouts.

Checked both suggestions against the supported Codex writer and the service conventions at 6053165ce2.
The concatenated-frame limitation is valid general Zstd hardening, but Codex encodes the entire rollout with one encoder and one finish, publishes a fresh compressed file, and materializes plain JSONL before appending. This writer does not produce concatenated frames, so broader decoder compatibility is outside this fix.
The tracing suggestion is nonblocking: both callers provide named operation spans (AgentSessionScanner.readCwd and AgentSessionScanner.readTranscript), so the helper is covered by those spans. No implementation change is required for either finding.
Thanks for working on this! I tested head 6053165ce2bb536cf9bd957809c398bd12b41ad7 on macOS arm64 against real compressed rollouts written by Codex itself, with the base b5a226e49c52ecab4ddc2d678a7012d97e651a6a as the comparison. These checks ran on 2026-10-25 (UTC).
Setup: My ~/.codex/sessions had 274 .jsonl.zst rollouts produced by Codex's own compression worker (the CLI is currently 0.163.0). I copied 157 of them, with their mtimes, into an isolated CODEX_HOME. The largest was 8.2 MiB compressed / 34.5 MiB decompressed. As a control, I decompressed the same files into a second copy as plain .jsonl. A small read-only runner called the unchanged scanner's scan, then recentThreads for every candidate.
| Input | Base | This PR |
|---|---|---|
| Compressed only | 0 projects | 2 projects, 72 importable threads (754 messages) |
| Same files decompressed | 2 projects, 72 threads | 2 projects, 72 threads |
| Compressed + other plain rollouts | 6 projects, 78 threads | 7 projects, 149 threads |
- Per thread, the compressed results match the decompressed copy: session ID, title, model, timestamps, message count, and a hash of the message contents. Only the file suffix and size differ.
- Plain-file results are identical between the base and this PR.
- In the mixed run, one project had 101 eligible rollouts, so the existing 100-per-batch cap skipped the oldest one. That's expected behavior.
- Running the same runner under Electron 44.9.3's Node (24.22.0,
ELECTRON_RUN_AS_NODE) gave identical results. This checks the runtime only; I didn't launch the desktop UI. - All 274 compressed rollouts on this machine are single-frame (
zstd -l), which is consistent with your reading of the Codex writer for the concatenated-frame suggestion.
In the app: I started a web dev server with isolated state and a CODEX_HOME containing only the compressed copies:
/welcomelisted the compressed-only projects with the expected thread counts.- Importing one showed "Imported 1 thread". All four messages appeared in the thread; one intermediate reply sits inside the collapsed "Worked for…" group.
- The persisted rows matched the runner's output.
Tests on macOS: AgentSessionScanner.test.ts passes 54/55 on this PR, and both new zstd tests fail on the base. The remaining failure, excludes sandboxes reached through a symlink into the worktrees dir, also fails on the base with its own unmodified test file (52/53), so it isn't caused by this change. I didn't dig into it further; on this machine the unexpected candidate path is under /var/folders/....
Hopefully this helps fill in the macOS and real-rollout verification gap. Not covered: a packaged desktop build's UI, Windows, and this branch merged with current main.
Thanks again for the fix!
