Problem

migrate-dev-db --source state.sqlite reports success but drops all legacy threads when the source predates V2. A migration-54 fixture containing one project and one thread exits 0 with Repro: 0 threads; the same loss occurs after schema migrations when the server has not imported the legacy thread shells.

Change

Read the source schema, validate pending legacy shell imports, and copy rows in one read-only source transaction. Refuse unsupported legacy data before checkpointing or replacing the destination. The error explains how to import a copy through the server and select the resulting userdata/statev2.sqlite. Empty legacy sources and already-imported V2 sources retain their existing behavior.

Scope and approval

Fixes #19018

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. This is a focused refusal of a source the command cannot preserve, rather than a second implementation of the server's legacy importer.

Verification

  • Focused migration suite: 10/10 pass. Regression tests cover populated V1 and migrated-but-unimported V2 sources, typed refusal, and byte-for-byte destination WAL preservation. A deterministic late-write regression commits the first V1 thread after the former preflight boundary; validation now sees the same snapshot as the copy. The V2 fixture includes an already-imported legacy thread to check it remains accepted.
  • Targeted lint and formatting: pass. Server typecheck: pass.
  • Two independent final reviews: MERGE, no findings at a007595b42.

Runtime transcript and standalone synthetic reproduction script.

The original regression test failed at e0fba36b0d before implementation (assertion: “a source whose threads would be dropped must fail”). Final runtime proof was captured at a007595b42. The late-write regression fails at 44bd595e77 and passes at the current head. Render matrix is empty: CLI-only change, with no web, desktop, or mobile rendering paths. Browser and native client verification do not apply.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 5de8830

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This focused CLI bug fix prevents migrate-dev-db from silently dropping unimported legacy threads and verifies that rejected migrations do not modify the destination. The added behavior is narrowly scoped to unsupported legacy input, with existing valid migration paths preserved.

Walkthrough

The migration checks for unimported legacy threads within the source-copy transaction. It rejects sources with pending legacy threads and reports the source path and thread count. Destination-use checks run after the source copy and before migration.

Changes: Legacy thread migration guard

Layer / File(s)Summary
Source snapshot guard and migration error
apps/server/scripts/migrate-dev-db.ts
The migration counts legacy threads without a matching V2 thread.created event, or counts all legacy threads when the V2 projection table is absent. A positive count raises MigrateDevDbLegacySourceError. Snapshot SQL errors map to a snapshot phase error. The destination-use check runs after the source copy.
Fixtures and rejection tests
apps/server/scripts/migrate-dev-db.test.ts
Fixtures set event versions to V2 and add a legacy thread. Tests cover pre-V2 sources, V2 sources with legacy threads, and a race. They verify that rejection preserves destination database and WAL bytes.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: migrate-dev-db now refuses sources that contain legacy threads not yet imported into V2, instead of silently dropping them. It follows the conventional commit format and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the problem, the change, scope and approval, and verification. It links issue 19018, explains the refusal behavior, and gives concrete test results and a before/after evidence table. The Verification section is detailed and states the render matrix is empty. The template's guidance to state what could not be checked is only partly met, since the description does not list untested items. The template's approval requirement is addressed by pointing to the triaged issue via the automated flow. The description also keeps the same conventional title format the template asks for. Overall it is mostly complete.

  • test(server): migrate-dev-db refuses a legacy thread committed after the guard44bd595

Confirmed a narrower race at 9bf8c50e9a: an explicitly selected, initially empty V1 source can receive its first legacy thread after preflight. A deterministic regression test commits that row between preflight and copy; the command exits 0 with the late project present and zero threads. A V2 server does not insert legacy rows, but this V1 sequence requires consistent validation and copying.

  • fix(server): migrate-dev-db checks for legacy threads in the copy's own snapshota007595

Fixed in a007595b42: schema inspection, legacy validation and copying now share one source transaction. Destination checkpointing runs only after successful validation/copy. The deterministic late-write regression fails before this change and passes afterward; all 10 focused tests, lint, formatting and server typecheck pass. Both fresh reviewers returned MERGE.

  • Merge remote-tracking branch 'origin/main' into fix/issue-190185de8830

Merged current main into the fix branch at 5de88300e7. Resolved the FTS5 copy conflict by keeping main’s shadow-table filtering and index rebuild while moving schema inspection into the same source transaction as legacy validation and copying. Focused migration tests: 10/10 pass; targeted lint and formatting pass. Server typecheck was terminated with exit 143 before producing a result; current-head CI remains the typecheck gate.
