Problem

On macOS 15, launchctl bootout --wait is a usage error (exit 64): launchctl reads --wait as the target. The optional stop step swallows it, the old job stays loaded, and the strict bootstrap then fails with EIO. So t3 service install (repair), t3 update … --yes and t3 service restart fail with "Background setup failed while starting the service (exit code 5)", possibly with the new version's files already on disk, and t3 service uninstall can report success while the job keeps running. Julius confirmed the failure on macOS 15.7.9 in the #11995 triage, which also gives the fix direction.

Change

The launchd stop and deactivate steps now run plain launchctl bootout <service-target>, then wait on launchctl print <service-target> once a second until it answers 113 (no such service) or 112 (no such domain), within the existing 120 s STOP_STEP_TIMEOUT. The wait is an optional untilExit field on BootServiceStep, run by a small waitForStep beside runStep. systemd steps are unchanged.

bootout stays optional, since it fails on a job that is not loaded. The strict print wait is the fail-closed gate: if bootout fails for any other reason, the job is still loaded and the wait fails at 120 s, before any file changes or bootstrap runs. Under withStopped, which makes every stop step strict when it has a running service to restore, that bootout fails at once. An unexpected print exit fails the wait at once. Only launchd's not-found answers count as gone. I saw 112 and 113 on macOS 27.0, and kareemsetl confirmed both on macOS 15.8.1.

This follows the triage's four steps:

  1. --wait is no longer passed, so there is nothing to probe.
  2. bootout, then print until the label is gone or 120 s pass.
  3. Fail closed, as above.
  4. The tests that hard-coded bootout --wait now expect bootout, then print.

Scope and approval

Fixes #11995 (bug, accepted). maria-rcks closed #18252 asking for "a smaller replacement that preserves shutdown verification". This is that replacement: +155 −18 across bootService.ts and its test, against #18252's +506 −34. The triage asked not to open a competing PR while keithce had one; his #12005 and #18252 are both closed and he has not opened another. Credit to keithce (#12005, #18252) and lastobelus (#7874).

Server only: the t3 CLI's launchd service. No desktop, web, mobile, contract or provider change.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.test.ts: 36 passed. With main's bootService.ts swapped in, five fail: the two darwin expectations (the stop argv, and the 120 s timeout on bootout), and the three new cases (a draining agent is waited out before bootstrap; one still loaded after 120 s fails the install; an unexpected print exit fails it). Two of those fail by hitting the 120 s test timeout, because main never polls. The fake runner now models a loaded launch agent, and the waits run on TestClock.
  • vp lint and vp fmt --check on both files, vp run --filter t3 typecheck, and vp run check:changed upstream/main (against this repo's main): clean.
  • Not reproduced: this Mac runs macOS 27.0, where launchctl bootout --wait is accepted, so the exit 64 is from Julius's 15.7.9 check and kareemsetl's 15.8.1 check, where t3 service install exited 5 with the old job loaded and succeeded after a plain bootout. I did not run t3 service install here, since it writes the real com.t3tools.t3code.service agent.
  • Real launchd on macOS 27.0, with a throwaway agent com.example.t3probe.drain (a /bin/sh loop that ignores SIGTERM, ExitTimeOut 6) bootstrapped from a scratch folder and removed afterwards. Plain bootout returns while the job drains and a bootstrap then fails with EIO; waiting on print until 113 makes it succeed:
1== plain bootout, then bootstrap at once
2 1.22s bootout returned: exit 0
3 1.22s print right after bootout: 0
4Bootstrap failed: 5: Input/output error
5 1.24s bootstrap during drain: exit 5
6 7.50s print: 113 (gone)
7== plain bootout, then wait on print until 112/113, then bootstrap
8 1.03s bootout returned: exit 0
9 1.04s print: 0
10 2.06s print: 0
11 3.08s print: 0
12 4.10s print: 0
13 5.12s print: 0
14 6.14s print: 0
15 7.17s print: 113
16 7.18s bootstrap after the wait: exit 0

Walkthrough

Boot-service steps can poll commands until configured exit codes occur or a 120-second timeout expires. macOS launchd stop and deactivation sequences now run bootout and poll launchctl print. Tests cover missing agents, draining, timeout, and probe errors.

On macOS, if the launchd drain check fails after the service has been booted out, an update or restart can leave the previously running service stopped. This only happens on an unexpected status error or timeout, but it is a regression from the prior restore behavior. Re-check the drain state before skipping restoration, and restart when the job is confirmed gone.

Explanation

The description includes all required sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. It provides reproduction context, implementation details, linked issue and approval context, focused test results, manual validation, and limitations.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR meets the coding requirements in #11995. bootout --wait is removed from both launchd stop and deactivate steps. The implementation polls launchctl print once per second and accepts only exit codes 112 and 113 as completion. Unexpected probe exits and a 120-second drain timeout fail before bootstrap. Tests cover the new command sequence, both not-found codes, drain polling, timeout, and probe failure.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #11995. The untilExit support implements launchd drain verification, and the test harness changes verify that behavior. The changes are limited to the server boot-service implementation and its tests. No unrelated product or platform changes are shown.

Independent macOS 15.8.1 confirmation of the exit codes your print wait depends on — the gap your description flags as unchecked on 15:

1launchctl print gui/$UID/com.example.doesnotexist -> 113
2launchctl print gui/99999/com.example.doesnotexist -> 112
3launchctl bootout --wait gui/$UID/com.example... -> 64 (Unrecognized target specifier)

Also hit the failure end-to-end: t3 service install exited 5 with the old job still loaded, and the same command succeeded after a manual plain bootout. Closing my duplicate #24631 in favour of this.

@kareemsetl These match the wait. It polls while print exits 0, treats 112 and 113 as gone, and fails on any other exit. I added your 15.8.1 results to the description.

  • fix(server): restore launchd only after confirming removale49fd29

Note

Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria

updated the original branch at e49fd29d93844f6f3fd0eefa2529220910b331f3, preserving @tiliakoos's commits and merging current main without rebasing.

  • kept plain bootout, strict bounded drain polling, and the 112/113 completion codes. shared command validation/logging removes the duplicate runner.
  • kept the drain check mandatory during maintenance, even after a failed initial status probe. after a failed stop, restoration makes one final five-second probe and bootstraps only on 112/113. systemd recovery is unchanged.
  • added coverage in the existing test file for 112, failed maintenance probes, drain timeout during maintenance, and restoration after a transient probe failure. both maintenance failures and the restoration failure were reproduced before their fixes.

verification: blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip passes, graphql validation, affected server/scripts typechecks, and all 40 service tests. the existing darwin regression fails against current main's unsupported --wait command. all 28 final-head checks are green and git.cafe reports mergeable. two independent reviews approved the preceding head; their restoration-comment nit is also corrected. the final commit addresses the subsequent bot restoration finding with a failing-then-passing regression. coderabbit's final review was rate limited; its green check is not a fresh review. review rounds stopped at the requested limit.

unverified here: native macos 15 launchd and packaged CLI/provider/client integration, because this vm is linux. the original discussion independently confirms 112/113 and rejected --wait on macos 15.8.1; the contributor's macos 27 drain evidence is preserved. no client UI changed, so there are no screenshots.

known limit: optional bootout plus polling can total 240 seconds only when bootout itself hangs, as already discussed and accepted in the original thread. the old shared-deadline suggestion adds machinery for that bounded failure path, so it remains declined. no labels changed, no pr closed, and nothing merged.

Verified in a real dev environment

no changed application behavior could be verified on this linux boat vm. this is an unverifiable result, not a passing runtime verification.

reviewed the description, complete two-file diff, discussion, inline review threads, and commit authors at e49fd29d93844f6f3fd0eefa2529220910b331f3. the pr is open; its listed commits are by tiliakoos and maria-rcks. git.cafe also numbers it #23017. its 28 reported checks are successful; native mergeability was pending when inspected. ci is not runtime proof.

checked the real host prerequisites:

text
1$ uname -s
2Linux
3$ node -p process.platform
4linux
5$ timeout 5 launchctl print gui/<uid>/com.t3tools.t3code.service
6timeout: failed to run command ‘launchctl’: No such file or directory
7exit: 127

uploaded platform command transcript, downloaded and inspected after upload.

Not verified

native macos launchd is required for every changed behavior: plain bootout followed by bounded print polling, delayed bootstrap until exit 112/113, fail-closed drain timeout/probe errors, and restoration after a failed maintenance stop. the affected user paths are t3 service install, t3 service restart, t3 service uninstall, and update/maintenance through withStopped.

could not reproduce the original macos 15 failure on main or verify the pr fix on this linux vm. linux selects systemd, so a running web app or a real codex turn would bypass the launchd path. no platform mocks or fixtures were substituted. no main worktree/install, pr checkout/install, dev server, provider turn, screenshots, or recording was made. nearby service restart/uninstall and update recovery remain unverified in a real runtime. no source changes or pushes were made, and no processes were started or retained.

next verification requires a disposable macos 15 environment with real launchd: reproduce the rejected bootout --wait on main, then exercise install/repair, restart, uninstall and update on this exact head, including a draining service and recovery failure paths. the macos evidence already in the discussion is prior evidence, not a check reproduced during this pass.
