fix(web): collapsed reasoning previews no longer process the whole block#23004
Problem
Opening a thread with a large reasoning trace can freeze web and Electron desktop while rendering a collapsed label. The full Markdown was parsed, then remarkThoughtPreview repeatedly concatenated and normalized the growing text for every fragment, producing quadratic work. This addresses #22985, mirrored as #22988.
Change
Bound collapsed and live preview source parsing to 8,192 characters, and stop transformer traversal after 2,048 characters. Text fragments are joined and whitespace-normalized once per text run. The source lookahead lets ordinary links and inline formatting close before the output cap. Expanded reasoning keeps the complete original text; layout, classes, and expand/collapse behavior are unchanged.
Scope and approval
Fixes #22985
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow; GitCafe mirror #22988.
Verification
Finite lookahead can leave exceptionally long inline constructs or distant reference definitions unresolved, or consume the source budget on hidden markup. Very long formulas can be truncated. These limits affect compact labels; expanded content stays complete. Mobile uses a separate plain-text preview renderer.
Final-head, five-sample medians (Codex proof-audit run):
| 190k-character fixture / measurement | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Mixed Markdown, transformer only | 9,778.89 ms | 0.348 ms |
| Mixed Markdown, parse + transformer | 10,705.35 ms | 26.01 ms |
| 10,000 bold fragments, transformer only | 9,027.12 ms | 0.317 ms |
The bold-fragment baseline is the earlier failing test run on this workspace VM (8,525–9,736 ms); its final after samples are 0.235–1.110 ms. Mixed before/after were measured together in the same process against the git-materialized original transformer. The independent Claude audit found comparable mixed medians: 9,990.86 → 0.491 ms transform and 11,012.75 → 25.39 ms parse+transform. The temporary original <200 ms benchmark assertion passes on the final code; retained regressions assert deterministic work bounds rather than wall-clock time.
Synthetic fixtures are exactly 190,000 source characters: 10,000 short bold fragments, plus a second fixture with headings, paragraphs, inline code, bold fragments and lists. Measurements use fresh trees in Vitest on this VM, with parsing outside the transform-only timer. Parse+transform compares the complete baseline input with the final bounded source path. These are isolated CPU measurements, not desktop window timings.
Validation: 23 focused tests pass, including deterministic traversal bounds, whitespace/math/fallback parity, actual collapsed-row source boundaries, live previews and full expanded content. Removing the live source slices makes both added source-boundary guards fail. Focused lint, formatting, web package typecheck, knip and React Compiler checks pass. No repo-wide test/typecheck run. Codex GPT-6.1-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 code reviews: MERGE. Independent evidence audits by both models: SUFFICIENT. Both reran the final benchmarks and retained tests; historical measurements using the earlier 2 KB source bound are superseded.
Cannot-verify desktop live: no client capture or end-to-end desktop timing was collected. The web/Electron preview path is shared. No dev server or browser was started; live userdata was not modified.
Draft for dispatcher certification of mirrored GitHub CI; leave this PR draft.
Implemented with GPT-6.1-Sol through the Codex harness; reviewed and proof-audited with GPT-6.1-Sol/Codex and Claude Opus 5.5/Claude Agent.

Approvability
Verdict: Needs Human Approval
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The production change is a focused fix that bounds collapsed and live reasoning-preview parsing while preserving expanded content, supported by targeted tests. The included development database fixture seeder has unresolved cloning, position, and path-safety concerns that require human review before approval.

📝 Walkthrough
Collapsed and live reasoning previews now limit source text before Markdown rendering. The transformer caps output at 2,048 characters and stops traversal when that limit is reached. Expanded reasoning continues to render the full trace. A new script seeds reasoning-preview fixtures in a specified database.

Resolve the canonical database path before enforcing the live-database guard.
If the supplied statev2.sqlite path or a parent directory is a symlink into ~/.t3, NodePath.resolve() keeps the alias path. The lexical prefix check can pass, while new NodeSqlite.DatabaseSync(dbPath) opens the live database. The script can then archive all currently unarchived threads and modify the database.
This script requires an explicit developer-supplied path, so the risk is limited to this workflow.

Derive the reasoning position from stored turn-item positions.
The issue is not that assistant.ordinal uses a different scheme. EventSink normalizes each turn-item payload to the position allocated by TurnItemPositionStore. When the user and assistant positions are consecutive, assistant.ordinal - 1 equals the user’s position.
Because orchestration_v2_turn_item_positions has UNIQUE (thread_id, ordinal), INSERT OR REPLACE removes the user’s position row before inserting the reasoning row. Derive a separate position from the stored user and assistant positions. If no gap exists, shift later positions before inserting the reasoning position.
