Problem

The integrated browser has no find on page. Pressing Cmd+F (Ctrl+F on Windows/Linux) on a loaded page does nothing, and the browser's ⋮ menu has no find option, so the only way to search a page is DevTools. Reported in #22952.

Change

Adds find on page for Electron-rendered browser tabs:

  • Find bar. Cmd+F opens a find bar over the page. It searches as you type, shows active/total, and supports Enter / Shift+Enter, the arrow buttons, and Escape to close. Closing it hands focus back to the page, so the next Cmd+F works without clicking.
  • Desktop. PreviewManager gets findInPage / stopFindInPage and forwards Chromium's found-in-page updates. These go through new IPC channels and DesktopPreviewBridge methods. Electron's findNext: true means "start a new search", so the contract names it newSession.
  • The page sees the shortcut first, as in Chrome. Web apps that bind Cmd+F (editors, forums) keep their own find. The guest preload reports the key back only if the page did not call preventDefault. When focus is inside an iframe the preload cannot see the key, so the host claims it first, as the other forwarded shortcuts do.
  • Entry points.
    • preview.find keybinding, default mod+f when previewFocus. It can be rebound in Settings → Keybindings as "Preview: Find on Page".
    • "Find on page" item in the browser ⋮ menu, showing the current shortcut.
    • "Find on page in browser" command palette action while the browser panel is open.
  • Focus after navigation. Submitting a URL now focuses the page, the way a browser's address bar does. Without this, page shortcuts like Cmd+F only work after a click into the page.
  • Where find isn't available. Streamed/server browser tabs and the web build have no Electron webContents to search. There the ⋮ item is hidden, and the shortcut or palette action shows a short "not available" toast.

Scope and approval

This fixes #22952: Cmd+F, a basic browser function, does nothing in the integrated browser. The issue is not triaged yet. The change covers only that one problem, across the layers it needs: the contract, desktop IPC and preview manager, guest preload, preview UI, and the keybinding entry. If maintainers see this as a feature that needs an Ideas discussion first, I'm happy to move it there.

Verification

Focused tests:

  • apps/desktop/src/preview/Manager.test.ts covers the following:
    • findInPage maps to Electron's options.
    • Every found-in-page update reaches subscribers.
    • stopFindInPage clears the selection.
    • The page gets the find shortcut first on macOS (Cmd), Linux and Windows (Ctrl). The host opens find only when the preload reports the key unhandled, and claims it first when a subframe has focus.
  • vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, typecheck and tests.

Manual checks in the desktop dev build on macOS, using https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_browser:

  • Typing in the find bar highlights matches immediately (e.g. 5/134), with no Enter needed.
  • Next/previous work, and a query with no matches shows 0/0 in red.
  • Cmd+F works right after a URL loads, with no click into the page.
  • Cmd+F, Escape, Cmd+F opens the bar again.
  • The binding shows up in Settings → Keybindings.

Not checked:

  • Windows and Linux in a real app (only unit tests).
  • A page that binds Cmd+F itself, to confirm its own find wins.
  • The palette action on a new, unsaved thread. I fixed that after the recording below, where it is missing.

Before: the browser ⋮ menu has no find option, and Cmd+F does nothing.

Browser more menu without a find option

After: Cmd+F opens the find bar and highlights matches as you type.

Find bar open on a Wikipedia page with matches highlighted

After: the shortcut can be changed in Settings → Keybindings.

Explanation

Issue #22952 requires that Cmd+F (Ctrl+F on Windows/Linux) open a find bar and highlight page matches in the integrated browser. The browser ⋮ menu must also offer find. The PR meets these requirements: (1) Desktop: PreviewManager.findInPage maps to Electron webContents.findInPage with findNext set from newSession. stopFindInPage calls stopFindInPage('clearSelection'). The found-in-page listener forwards every update to subscribers. These run through new IPC channels, DesktopPreviewBridge methods, and contract types. (2) Web UI: PreviewFindBar searches as the user types, shows active/total counts, supports next, previous, and Escape, and stops the search on close or unmount. (3) Shortcut: the preview.find command is in STATIC_KEYBINDING_COMMANDS with default mod+f when previewFocus. The guest preload (PickPreload.ts) reports unhandled keys. The host opens find on a reported key, or claims the key first when a subframe has focus. (4) Menu: PreviewMoreMenu shows a 'Find on page' item when actions.find is set, and PreviewView wires it. Unit tests in Manager.test.ts cover option mapping, result forwarding, selection clearing, and shortcut routing for macOS, Linux, and Windows. The reviewed diff of Manager.ts matches these claims. Remaining uncertainty: Windows and Linux behavior and the page-owned Cmd+F case are not checked in a real app. The issue does not require those checks, and unit tests cover the routing logic.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Each change connects to #22952 or supports its implementation. Contracts, IPC channels, preload bridge, and PreviewManager find methods implement the search path. The guest preload shortcut report and host routing implement the shortcut requirement. The find bar, ⋮ menu item, command palette action, and preview.find keybinding implement the entry points. The KeybindingsSettings label and ReopenClosedViewShortcut forwarding register the new command. The shared helper in Manager.ts that filters non-macOS Ctrl+Alt punctuation keys was extracted from existing logic. The reviewed diff shows the same filter applied to existing forwarded shortcuts, so this refactor does not change their behavior. Page-first priority applies only to preview.find (PAGE_FIRST_FORWARDED_COMMANDS). Focus-after-navigation in PreviewView supports the issue's reproduction, which requires a click into the page before Cmd+F works. The F-key pattern in PickPreload.ts is not described in the PR description. Its only effect in the reviewed code is to forward keys that match a page-first command, and preview.find is the only such command, so it is connected to find-shortcut handling. No change is shown to be unrelated to the issue.

Explanation

The description covers the problem, implementation, scope, verification, manual checks, limitations, screenshots, and recording. However, the Scope and approval section states that issue #22952 is not triaged and does not provide explicit maintainer approval or a sufficiently clear exemption rationale under the repository template.

Resolution

Add a link to the triaged issue or maintainer approval comment. If this is an approval-exempt obvious bug fix, explicitly explain why the change qualifies under that exemption.

200# webContents
201
202> Render and control web pages.
203
204Process: Main
205
206`webContents` is an EventEmitter. It is responsible for rendering and controlling a web page and is a property of the `BrowserWindow` object. An example of accessing the `webContents` object:
207
208 const { BrowserWindow } = require('electron')
209
210 const win = new BrowserWindow({ width: 800, height: 1500 })
211
212 win.loadURL('https://github.com')
213
214 const contents = win.webContents
215
216 console.log(contents)

220## Navigation Events
221
222Several events can be used to monitor navigations as they occur within a `webContents`.
223
224### Document Navigations
225
226When a `webContents` navigates to another page (as opposed to an in-page navigation), the following events will be fired.
227
228 * `did-start-navigation`
229 * `will-frame-navigate`
230 * `will-navigate` (only fired when main frame navigates)
231 * `will-redirect` (only fired when a redirect happens during navigation)
232 * `did-redirect-navigation` (only fired when a redirect happens during navigation)
233 * `did-frame-navigate`
234 * `did-navigate` (only fired when main frame navigates)
235
236Subsequent events will not fire if `event.preventDefault()` is called on any of the cancellable events.
237
238### In-page Navigation
239
240In-page navigations don't cause the page to reload, but instead navigate to a location within the current page. These events are not cancellable. For an in-page navigations, the following events will fire in this order:
241
242 * `did-start-navigation`
243 * `did-navigate-in-page`
244
245### Frame Navigation
246
247The `will-navigate` and `did-navigate` events only fire when the mainFrame navigates. If you want to also observe navigations in `<iframe>`s, use `will-frame-navigate` and `did-frame-navigate` events.
248
249## Methods
250
251These methods can be accessed from the `webContents` module:
252
253 `
254
255 const { webContents } = require('electron')
256
257 console.log(webContents)
258
259 `
260
261### `webContents.getAllWebContents()`
262
263Returns `WebContents[]` - An array of all `WebContents` instances. This will contain web contents for all windows, webviews, opened DevTools, and DevTools extension background pages.
264
265### `webContents.getFocusedWebContents()`
266
267Returns `WebContents | null` - The web contents that is focused in this application, otherwise returns `null`.
268
269### `webContents.fromId(id)`
270
271 * `id` Integer
272
273Returns `WebContents | undefined` - A WebContents instance with the given ID, or `undefined` if there is no WebContents associated with the given ID.
274
275### `webContents.fromFrame(frame)`
276
277 * `frame` WebFrameMain
278
279Returns `WebContents | undefined` - A WebContents instance with the given WebFrameMain, or `undefined` if there is no WebContents associated with the given WebFrameMain.
280
281### `webContents.fromDevToolsTargetId(targetId)`
282
283 * `targetId` string - The Chrome DevTools Protocol TargetID associated with the WebContents instance.
284
285Returns `WebContents | undefined` - A WebContents instance with the given TargetID, or `undefined` if there is no WebContents associated with the given TargetID.
286
287When communicating with the Chrome DevTools Protocol, it can be useful to lookup a WebContents instance based on its assigned TargetID.
288
289 `
290
291 async function lookupTargetId (browserWindow) {

Ignore stale findInPage results.

findInPage returns a request ID, and each found-in-page result includes one. Store the active request ID per guest, forward only matching results, and invalidate it in stopFindInPage so late results cannot update the find bar after a newer search or stop.

7Update the find-in-page handling around emitFindResult to track the latest

9ID matches the active one. In stopFindInPage, invalidate that guest’s active

Skipping: Chromium already drops these replies before Electron emits found-in-page. Every page reply goes through FindRequestManager::ShouldIgnoreReply, which ignores replies when no session is active (as after stopFindInPage) or whose request ID is older than the current session (find_in_page_client.cc, find_request_manager.cc). The find bar also unsubscribes on close and hides the count when the query is empty.

@armanarutiunov Thanks for the clarification. Chromium’s FindRequestManager::ShouldIgnoreReply handles the stale-session replies that I flagged. My recommendation duplicated that upstream protection. No change is needed for this finding, so I withdraw it.

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, the Electron find-in-page handler in apps/desktop/src/preview/Manager.ts receives results after Chromium's FindRequestManager::ShouldIgnoreReply filtering. Chromium ignores page replies when no find session is active and replies with request IDs older than the current session. Do not require duplicate request-ID filtering solely to protect against these stale-session replies.

Preserve the AltGraph guard for forwarded keys.

On Windows, an AltGraph key can produce [ with ctrlKey and altKey set and code equal to Digit8. If find is bound to ctrl+alt+8, this payload can open the find bar while the user types. The manager's earlier AltGraph guard does not apply to this IPC path. Preserve the guard when reporting or decoding the event. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Report configured shortcuts without modifiers.

A preview.find binding such as / is valid, but this filter drops it. Manager.ts leaves the key to the main-frame page, so the find bar never opens when the page does not handle it. Match against the configured shortcuts instead of requiring a modifier or function key. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

✅ Addressed in the latest update

Skipping: the modifier filter is deliberate. Typing in a page input does not call preventDefault, so a bare-key binding such as / would open find while the user types, and every keystroke would cross IPC.

@armanarutiunov Understood. defaultPrevented does not distinguish normal text input from an unused shortcut. The filter deliberately excludes bare keys to protect page typing and limit shortcut IPC traffic. I withdraw this finding.

Support find shortcuts on draft routes.

On a draft route, readRouteThreadRef() returns null. If the browser toolbar has focus, the handler consumes Cmd+F or Ctrl+F without dispatching the find action. Resolve the draft’s thread reference before applying the permission check. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Skipping: this is the shared previewCommand, and refresh, zoom and focus-URL have the same gap on draft routes. When the page has focus, Cmd+F takes the desktop menu-action path, which works on drafts. Fixing every preview shortcut on drafts is a separate problem under the one-problem-per-PR rule.

@armanarutiunov Understood. The supplied code confirms that previewCommand shares the draft-route limitation across find, refresh, zoom, and focus-URL. I accept deferring that shared limitation to a separate PR. The toolbar-focus case remains unfixed, rather than disproved.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for preview shortcuts on draft routes?

Defer the browser find dispatch until the command palette closes.

When the find bar is already open, executeItem closes the palette and then runs this action synchronously. PreviewView.handleFind therefore attempts to focus the find input while the preview remains inert. The palette’s finalFocus handler can then restore workspace focus. Defer dispatchPreviewAction("find") until the close lifecycle completes.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @armanarutiunov

Skipping: this follows the existing "Find in thread" palette action exactly. It closes the palette, then opens find, and the bar focuses itself. If palette focus restoration steals focus from actions like these, the fix belongs in the palette for every action, not in this PR.

Correction: I checked this in the desktop dev app and you were right. When the find bar was already open, the palette action focused the input while the palette was still open, so the palette put focus back on the composer. Fixed in d4971487a0: the bar now focuses after render, the same way ThreadFindBar does. With the bar closed and with it already open, the find input now keeps focus after the palette closes.

@armanarutiunov Your later correction addresses this concern. Focusing after render in d4971487a0 avoids the focus conflict without changing the palette’s shared dispatch behavior. Thanks for checking that the find input keeps focus with the bar both closed and already open.

@armanarutiunov Thanks for checking both states. Your reported fix in d4971487a0 addresses the focus conflict by focusing after render. No change to the palette’s shared dispatch behavior is needed.

5Learning: Within repository "pingdotgg/t3code", only for files matching one of ["apps/web/src/components/CommandPalette.tsx"]: When reviewing changes to the browser-find action in apps/web/src/components/CommandPalette.tsx, check that the find input retains focus after the palette closes, both when the find bar was closed and when it was already open. Do not require deferred action dispatch if the find bar's after-render focus handling already satisfies both cases.

Clear or preserve find state when the runtime tab changes.

Switching from tab A to tab B preserves PreviewView, but unmounts the A-bound PreviewFindBar. Its cleanup stops the search, and returning to A mounts a new bar with an empty query. The mount effect then focuses and selects that empty input.

Clear the request on a tab change, or persist and restore the query with the request.

171 * `false`: user interaction with the rest of the document is allowed.
172 * `'trap-focus'`: focus is trapped inside the dialog, but document page scroll is not locked and pointer interactions outside of it remain enabled.
173
174When `modal` is `true` or `'trap-focus'`, render `<Dialog.Close>` inside `<Dialog.Popup>` so touch screen readers can escape the popup.

Preserve find-bar focus after the command palette closes.

executeItem starts closing the palette before the Find action dispatches. PreviewFindBar can then focus its input while the popup is still closing, after which Base UI's finalFocus restores workspace or composer focus. Ensure the palette cleanup does not overwrite the find-bar focus.

The resolved @base-ui/react version is 1.5.0, not 1.4.1.

8Update the focus handling around PreviewFindBar’s inputRef so the find input
9receives focus after the command palette finishes closing and Base UI’s
10finalFocus cleanup runs. Ensure palette cleanup does not subsequently restore
11focus to the workspace or composer.

Skipping: already fixed in d4971487a0 and checked in the desktop dev app, with the find bar closed and with it already open. When the palette closes, Base UI's focus cleanup calls the palette's finalFocus, which focuses the composer. React runs every effect cleanup in a commit before any new effect, so the bar's focus effect in that same commit runs last. The palette close and the find request share one batched commit, so the find input keeps focus.

@armanarutiunov Thanks for the explanation and for checking both states. My finding assumed that finalFocus would run after the find input’s focus effect. Your explanation and desktop checks show that this assumption does not apply here. I withdraw the finding. No further change is needed.
