Problem

The PR Code tab can discard its loaded diff when PR activity refreshes. A file-tab round trip also loses expansion choices, scroll position and the selected commit. Reproduced on main for #22886.

Change

Keep lightweight view state in the existing review store, scoped by environment, thread and PR, with bounded retention. File choices use stable paths. Refresh revalidates the loaded pages and restores the saved view after they load; background revalidation retains unchanged slices. File reveals and user input take priority over restoration. Changed patches invalidate stale line anchors.

Scope and approval

Fixes #22886 GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/22886 Triaged bug via the automated issue flow.

Verification

Evidence re-captured as narrated before/after recordings per EVIDENCE.md. Compared 448b8a9186 → 0a986b24eb.

Partial verification: 4 recording pairs cover matrix rows 01 and 09; 0/34 rows fully verified against the fixture matrix. Capture index · Proof audit pass 2: INSUFFICIENT on coverage; narration and bounded claims confirmed; independent rebuild differs by 0.167% of pixels, confined to the header.

The same script runs on both builds: scroll the expanded seven-file PR to 470 px, make three Summary and three Timeline round trips, then use PR-menu Refresh and observe for ten seconds. Tab returns retain 470 px in both builds. After Refresh, baseline shows an empty diff; the after build returns seven files at 470 px.

Viewport/themeNarrated recordings, stills and comparisonsCoverage
1440×900 lightPairPartial 01/09
1440×900 darkPairPartial 01/09
390×844 lightPairPartial 01/09
390×844 darkPairPartial 01/09

Rows 02–08 and 10–34 remain unverified: controlled update/error/page fixtures, watch/background refresh, editor round trips, commit contents, selections, huge scrolling, isolation/retention, raw/empty/error paths, desktop and remote runs are absent. Rows 01/09 also lack the short/long fixtures, split layout and thread surface the matrix asks for.

Environment: Linux x86_64, Chrome 154, DPR 2; 1440×900 and 390×844, light/dark. Real read-only GitCafe PR, unified/wrapped global review, identical isolated SQLite seed. Live UI clock. Video trails event timestamps by 0.25–0.76 s; corrected seek times are in the index. Native mobile and Electron are untested.

What else changed: seven web files implement review-session retention, fold identity, scroll restoration and page revalidation. Server, contracts, desktop shell and native mobile are unchanged. Live metadata and settling layout introduce documented capture differences.

Supplemental static starting state, 390×844 light (does not satisfy an interaction row; no starting pixels exceed the >16/255 threshold; difference and overlay images are linked in the index):

Capture: Codex gpt-6.1-sol; proof audit: Claude Opus 5.5.

Implemented and reviewed with GPT-6.1-sol through the Codex harness and Claude Opus 5.5 through the Claude Agent harness in T3 Code.

Superseded: the Verification section above (the 448b8a9186 → 0a986b24eb captures and the INSUFFICIENT pass-2 re-audit) is replaced by the Evidence below, captured on the merged head.

Evidence

Before 8d3b061121 (origin/main, the merge-base; already includes https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/22917's refresh fix) → after 2b388c27fa (PR code with main merged). 8d5bc57aea adds only the seed and driver scripts under apps/web/scripts/evidence/pr-22930/. Matrix · Captures index · Audit pass 2

Same script on both builds: expand long-b.ts and renamed.ts and collapse the rest, scroll to the middle (3000 px), select commit C2, then trigger the row's update path. Metrics are measured by the driver; captions are burned in.

RowPathBefore 8d3b061121After 2b388c27faResult
R1new push (C4) + Refreshmp4mp4Unverified: C4 never reached the UI in either build
R2external push + focus refresh——Unverified: not run (65 s cache wait per build exceeded the budget)
R3background refreshmp4mp4No regression: both keep C2, the fold and 3000
R4PR-menu Refresh, 390×844mp4mp4Regression at 390: before keeps 3000; after remounts and lands at 3340 (~27 lines low)
R5Summary/Timeline round tripsmp4mp4No regression: both keep 3000 and C2
R6hide/show panel, close/reopen PRmp4mp4Fixed: before resets to All commits, all collapsed, 0; after restores C2, long-b.ts expanded, 3000
R7switch threads and back, 390×844mp4mp4Fixed, with drift: before resets both threads; after restores commit and fold on both threads, with A at 3760 vs 3400 saved
R8select commit, back, reloadmp4mp4No regression: both reset, by design

At-rest stills after Refresh (S1 1440×900, S2 390×844):

S1: 274–309 px differ (no visible change). S2: ~115k px differ (after sits 340 px lower).

Environment: fs-17, Linux 6.1.102 x86_64; Playwright 1.60.0 headless Chromium 148.0.7778.96, DPR 1; 1440×900 and 390×844, light/dark emulated. Local fixture forge codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo:11 (11.0.16) at forgejo.127.0.0.1.nip.io:3000; deterministic fixture main 65c1abc, PR L review-l (8 files, C1 13ab638 C2 1d32c27 C3 6329e89), PR S review-s c34151c (7 files). Each build ran vp run dev against its own isolated home seeded identically.

What else changed: the merge with main resolved one conflict in PullRequestCodeTab.tsx, keeping the PR's refresh path, which supersedes https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/22917's three-line fix. It also added codeViewKey to the browser test that https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/22917 introduced. The code diff vs main is still 7 files under apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/, plus the evidence scripts. Incidental: an "Update available" toast was hidden by injected CSS in both builds.

Verification log
 • Proof audit pass 1: matrix v2 (10 rows, local Forgejo seed).
 • Proof audit pass 2: INSUFFICIENT R1 R2 (report). R4, R6 and R7 were verified against decoded frames; R3, R5 and R8 against event data. The fixture rebuilt from the committed build-fixture.sh with identical SHAs, and S1/S2 diff pixel counts reproduced exactly. Events JSON does not embed build SHAs; builds are tied to ports.
 • Audit assessment of the 390 px drift: PullRequestCodeScrollRestoration restores a pixel scrollTop once, before wrapped rows are measured, so at narrow widths it lands 27–34 lines off. It is still much better than before for thread switches and panel reopen (R6/R7), but a small regression for explicit Refresh (R4/S2), where main kept the exact position. Possible fixes: anchor to the first visible line, re-apply once rows are measured, or avoid remounting on Refresh.
 • Unverified: R1 (pushed C4 not shown after Refresh within 60 s in either build; in-app Push is replaced by Merge/Commit once a PR exists) and R2 (not run, budget). The PR watch never notifies the web client, so the focus refresh stands in for it.
 • Tests on merged head: vp test run src/components/pullRequest/ passes 208/208 unit and 3/3 browser; web tsc --noEmit is clean; lint/fmt pass on the changed paths.
 • CI: pending for 8d5bc57aea. cafe pr status lists Check and Lint as failing but has no runs at this head yet; locally, lint and fmt pass on the changed paths.
 • Model/harness: Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code in T3 Code (evidence lead, auditors, capturer).

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR introduces substantial production state, pagination, anchor-validation, and scroll-restoration behavior across the PR review UI rather than a narrowly isolated fix. An unresolved concern identifies possible draft/selection loss during refresh, while the evidence harness also has fresh-run defects, so the asynchronous behavior warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull-request Code tab now persists view state by environment, thread, and pull-request reference. It reconciles refreshed diff pages, validates selections and drafts against file identity and content versions, and restores saved scroll position and pagination depth.

Changes: Pull request Code-tab state

Layer / File(s)Summary
Persist Code-tab state
apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestReviewStore.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestDetailPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestCodeTab.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestCodeViewState.test.ts
The review store keeps Code-tab state under a composite review key, with limits on retained sessions and file overrides. The detail panel passes the key to the Code tab and stores commit selection and Code-tab condensation. Tests cover state persistence and key isolation.
Refresh diff pages and validate file anchors
apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestDiff.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestSelection.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestCodeTab.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestCodeViewState.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestCodeTab.browser.test.tsx
Diff refresh merges cursor slices and discards later slices when a changed slice invalidates them. The Code tab uses stable file identity and content versions for diff items, comments, and selection anchors. Tests cover pagination changes, file identity, and stale anchors.
Restore saved scroll position
apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestCodeScroll.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestCodeTab.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestCodeViewState.test.ts
Scroll restoration waits for usable layout, loads pages as needed, and clamps the saved position to available content. User input cancels restoration. Tests cover refreshes, page loading, layout changes, and interaction cancellation.
Build and capture review scenarios
apps/web/scripts/evidence/pr-22930/*
The evidence scripts build and seed a local fixture, run browser scenarios, and save event logs and recordings. The README documents setup and cleanup.

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to web PR Code-tab retention, diff revalidation, stable file identity, scroll restoration, line-anchor validation, bounded store retention, related tests, and evidence scripts. These changes support issue [#22886]. No unrelated production behavior is demonstrated.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description includes all required sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. It explains the issue, implementation, linked issue and triage, test results, evidence, environment, limitations, and agent usage. The verification is incomplete and documents known unverified scenarios and a narrow-width scroll-position regression, but the description clearly reports these limitations.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#22886] requires unfinished inline comment text and selected lines to survive an editor round trip when the file is unchanged. At the reviewed head, PullRequestCodeTab.tsx stores draft and selectedLines in local React state. PullRequestCodeViewState stores commit, fold, file, scroll, page, and chrome state, but it has no draft or selection fields. The current code therefore does not establish persistence for this required flow. The reported verification also leaves this flow unverified.

Resolution

Persist the unfinished comment and selected-line anchor in the scoped review state. Restore them after the editor round trip when the file identity and content version match. Reject the anchor when the file content changes. Add automated tests for unchanged-file restoration and changed-file invalidation.

Keep the previous slices during explicit refresh, or defer anchor validation until the first refreshed page arrives.

registry.refresh puts the pullRequestEnvironment.diff result into its waiting state, which useEnvironmentQuery exposes as diffQuery.isPending. Because restartPullRequestDiffPagination also returns an empty slice list, the loading branch unmounts the viewer. The empty files list then clears selectedLines and draft, even when the refreshed patch is unchanged.

The anchor-validation clear is new relative to the merge base. The minimal guard below prevents draft loss, but keeping stale slices mounted is still required to preserve the viewer and its composer text during the refresh.

🟠 Major · Persist inline draft state across Code-tab remounts. · PullRequestCodeTab.tsx:329-346

apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestCodeTab.tsx:329-346 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Persist inline draft state across Code-tab remounts.

selectedLines and draft are component-local state. The inline textarea also stores its text locally because PullRequestCodeTab does not provide onTextChange. When the pull-request surface is replaced, these components unmount. Returning to the same environment, thread, PR, commit, and unchanged content creates empty state, so the user loses the selected lines and unfinished comment. The review store currently restores only view settings.

Persist the selection, draft anchor, and draft text under the existing review scope. Restore them on mount, and clear them on submit, cancel, scope changes, or content-version mismatch. Add a remount regression test for this unchanged-content round trip. This is separate from refresh-time viewer restoration.

231L89:
232L90: Workspaces are handled out-of-the-box by Knip.
233L91:
234L92: Workspaces are sometimes also referred to as package-based monorepos, or as packages in a monorepo. Knip uses the term workspace exclusively to indicate a directory that has a `package.json`.
235L93: ## Configuration

337
338### `paths`
339
340Section titled “paths”
341
342Tools like TypeScript, webpack and Babel support import aliases in various ways. Knip automatically includes `compilerOptions.paths` from the TypeScript configuration, but does not automatically use other types of import aliases. They can be configured manually:
343
344knip.json
345
346 `
347
348 {
349
350 "paths": {
351
352 "@lib": ["./lib/index.ts"],

354 "@lib/*": ["./lib/*"]
355
356 }
357
358 }
359
360 `
361
362Each workspace can have its own `paths` configured. Knip `paths` follow the TypeScript semantics:
363
364 * Path values are an array of relative paths.
365 * Paths without an `*` are exact matches.

Exclude the manual evidence scripts from Knip.

The apps/web workspace does not declare these scripts as entries. Knip can report driver.mjs, mcp-call.ts, and pair.mjs as unused files during knip:check. Use a workspace-relative pattern:

Add the missing fresh-run setup.

The documented workflow uses directories that no preceding command creates. start-dev.sh writes to $EV_DIR/logs, seed-threads.sh writes its redirected output to $EV_DIR/drv, run.sh writes to $EV_DIR/out, and post.py writes to $EV_DIR/media.

start-dev.sh also requires the after worktree at $HOME/wt/pr-22930. Create its parent directory before adding the worktree.

Propagate scenario failures through the evidence runner.

driver.mjs catches scenario errors and completes finalization without setting a failure exit code. run.sh pipes the driver through cut without pipefail, so the documented workflow can return exit code 0 for a failed recording. Preserve the error artifacts, but propagate the failure status.
