A thread on a worktree cut from a non-default base such as dev showed the newest merged dev -> main release PR, even though the branch had no PR of its own. Every thread on such a checkout showed the same number, and the merged state could settle the thread.

The branch tracks origin/dev, so the PR lookup asked for --head dev. The existing guard only treated the default branch as a base. Now the lookup also treats the upstream as a base when it matches the branch's recorded gh-merge-base, which T3 writes when it creates a worktree from a base. The branch then looks up PRs under its own name, as it already does for a default-branch upstream. This covers the thread row and composer footer, since both read the same server status, and the branch PR lookup that shares the same cache. Cross-repository upstreams are not changed. A branch made with plain git checkout -b feature/x origin/dev and no recorded base is not changed: git gives no way to tell it apart from git checkout --track remote/branch, where a differently named upstream really is the PR head (an existing test covers that case).

Screenshots are component renders in headless Chromium, not a full app run: the sidebar PR badge fed the real GitManager.status output from each version for a worktree branch cut from dev.

Proof: the new test status does not inherit a release PR from a worktree's non-default base upstream in apps/server/src/git/GitManager.test.ts fails on main (it gets PR 49) and passes with the fix. Ran vp test run apps/server/src/git/GitManager.test.ts (101 passed) and vp run check:changed (all pass). Not checked against a real GitHub repository with a dev branch.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 12570e8

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable β€” This is a narrowly scoped server bug fix that prevents worktrees with recorded non-default bases from inheriting the base branch’s merged PR. It includes a focused regression test and preserves existing lookup behavior for other branch configurations.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

GitManager now recognizes a configured gh-merge-base when resolving a worktree’s PR lookup head. A regression test checks that status does not attach a merged release PR from the non-default base branch.

GitManager recognizes the configured gh-merge-base when identifying a base branch. The regression test checks that status reports feature/from-dev, returns no PR, and does not query GitHub with --head dev.

The fix covers the common case where the base is stored as a plain branch name. Unusual base formats, or a base changed shortly after a lookup, could still attach the wrong PR to a worktree briefly. Consider addressing these before merge.

Normalize gh-merge-base before comparing it with the upstream branch.

If feature/from-dev tracks origin/dev and gh-merge-base is refs/heads/dev or origin/dev, this comparison returns false. resolvePrBase accepts those base forms at Lines 2028-2048. The lookup then searches for a PR headed by dev and can attach its merged release PR to the feature branch. Compare resolved branch names, including the applicable remote, instead of comparing the raw config value.

Account for gh-merge-base changes in the PR lookup cache.

If gh-merge-base changes while the branch and upstream remain unchanged, freshGitState: true refreshes Git-state reads but does not invalidate the PR lookup entry. The unchanged key can therefore return the cached head context and PR until the entry expires.

Include the resolved base value in the cache key, or invalidate the entry when a fresh read detects a changed base. The stale window is bounded, but open-PR results remain cached for 60 seconds and no-open-PR results for up to 5 minutes.

Note

πŸ€– Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo

Not changing either. T3 writes gh-merge-base only as a bare branch name (base.branchName at apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.ts:3821, currentUpstream.branchName at :2621), and gh stores it the same way, so refs/heads/dev or origin/dev only come from hand-edited config. The value is written once, at worktree creation before any status lookup, or on first publish only when empty, and that publish also retargets the upstream that is part of the cache key (apps/server/src/git/GitManager.ts:1170), so a stale entry for a changed base does not occur through T3.

@t3dotgg Thanks for clarifying the write paths. I withdraw both findings.

  • T3 writes gh-merge-base as a bare branch name. My normalization finding assumed config forms that T3 does not write.
  • T3 writes the base before lookup, or on first publish when empty. First publish also changes the upstream in the cache key. My cache finding assumed an independent base change that does not occur through T3.

No change is needed for these findings.

5Learning: In apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.ts, T3 writes branch.<branch>.gh-merge-base as a bare branch name from base.branchName during worktree creation or currentUpstream.branchName on first publish when the config is empty. Worktree creation writes the value before status lookup. First publish also retargets the upstream, which is included in the PR lookup cache key in apps/server/src/git/GitManager.ts. Do not flag raw gh-merge-base comparisons or missing merge-base cache-key fields solely on scenarios involving hand-edited config or independent base changes that these T3 write paths do not produce.
