In WSL-only mode, Settings → General → t3 command now installs t3 inside the selected WSL distro, where it runs the same server and data as the app. Before, it put a Windows t3.cmd on the Windows PATH, and that command started the Windows server instead.

Live, in a disposable Ubuntu 24.04 distro with the real Linux CLI as the runtime:

text
1Install → /home/tester/.local/bin/t3, on PATH
2new login shell → command -v t3: /home/tester/.local/bin/t3
3 t3 --version: t3 v0.1.0
4 t3 pair reads /home/tester/.t3/userdata/server-runtime.json (the backend's home)
5runtime id changes, old runtime deleted → t3 still runs, from the new runtime
6Remove → deletes only its own launcher; a foreign ~/bin/t3 is left alone

Problem

A user on Twitter: the "install t3 command" button ignores the WSL-only setting. DesktopCliCommand chose what to do from platform === "win32" alone and never read the WSL settings. It has worked this way since #16683, so in WSL-only mode the button installed a command that runs a different server from the one the app uses.

Change

  • Target. DesktopCliCommand uses the same check the backend uses to decide whether it runs in WSL: WSL only is on and WSL is available. The check moved out of DesktopBackendConfiguration.ts so both read it from one place. In WSL mode, Install, Status and Remove each run one script in the distro, the same way the app already reaches WSL (wsl.exe -d <distro> --exec sh -s). The script lives in the new wslCliCommand.ts.
  • The launcher. A small marker-tagged t3 goes in ~/.local/bin, or ~/bin, preferring a folder already on a new login shell's PATH. Install never overwrites or deletes a t3 it didn't write. If another t3 would run first, it refuses, as the Linux install does today.
  • Surviving desktop updates. The WSL runtime folder changes with each desktop version, and old folders get pruned. So after its WSL preflight passes, the backend writes the exact command it launches to ~/.t3/wsl-runtime/current: the staged runtime's t3, or node plus the server script when the runtime fell back to the extracted server tree. The file is written to a temp name and renamed into place. The launcher reads it on every run. This write runs alongside the existing distro IP probe, so it adds no time to backend start, and a failed write only logs a warning. Dev builds don't write it.
  • Same data. The launcher uses ~/.t3, the WSL backend's home, unless T3CODE_HOME is set.
  • Finding the PATH. Probing the login shell's PATH is bounded at 10 s. The probe writes to a temp file under coreutils timeout, which terminates its process group at the deadline. A profile that blocks on a child process made the first version hang forever.
  • UI. The row says where it installs, for example "Run T3 Code's CLI as t3 from any terminal in WSL (Ubuntu)." and "Installed in WSL (Ubuntu) at …". The IPC state gains an optional wsl: { distro, windowsInstalled }. One sentence was added to docs/user/install.md.

Calls a maintainer may want to change:

  • An existing Windows install is left in place, and the row notes that it's still there.
  • Stable and nightly on the same distro share one current file. The last one to start wins.

Scope and approval

A fix for a reported bug. Dara (maintainer) chose the behaviour: install inside the selected distro rather than hide the button or relabel it.

Verification

  • The live run above. Also live, in disposable distros, by the author and GPT-6 Astra over two review rounds:
    • Slow login profile. With a login profile that runs sleep 60, Status took 60.5 s before the fix and 10.1–10.5 s after. A fresh Install, which probes twice, took 20.7 s, inside the app's 30 s WSL limit. No processes were left behind.
    • Fallback runtime. In a distro without libatomic.so.1 the staged runtime can't start, so the backend falls back. Install used to fail with runtime-missing. Now it installs, and t3 --version runs through node plus the server script.
    • Login shells. Real dash, bash, zsh and fish login shells all worked.
    • Odd home paths. Spaces, apostrophes, $, backticks and backslashes survived.
    • Concurrent use. 300 concurrent records during 150 launcher runs never produced a mixed target.
  • vp test run on wslCliCommand.test.ts, DesktopCliCommand.test.ts and DesktopBackendConfiguration.test.ts passes. One failure in DesktopCliCommand.test.ts, "refuses to install behind another t3 that runs first", is on main too: on Windows it splits drive paths on :. The new tests cover:
    • The launcher keeps working after the runtime id changes and the old runtime is deleted.
    • Remove deletes only what Install wrote.
    • Install refuses behind another t3.
    • A shell blocked on a fifo still returns Status within the bound, and the probe process is gone.
    • WSL-only routes Install and Remove to the distro and leaves the Windows PATH alone.
    • A failed staged runtime records the node-plus-script target.
  • vp lint on the changed files, and vp run typecheck in apps/desktop and apps/web, are clean.

Not covered:

  • No packaged desktop was run, so there's no screenshot of the Settings row.
  • sudo t3 wasn't tried.
  • DesktopWslEnvironment.test.ts runs its fixtures in the default WSL distro on Windows, so it was left for Linux CI. This PR only removes one test from it.
  • Current main is merged with a merge commit; the WSL state preserves main's required launcherPath field as null.

Manual check in a packaged build with WSL only on: Settings → General → t3 command → Install. In a new WSL terminal, t3 --version and t3 pair should talk to the app's own server. Remove should delete ~/.local/bin/t3.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This fixes WSL-only CLI installation but adds a substantial cross-platform shell launcher and persistent runtime-target handling in packaged desktop startup. It also introduces a static-analysis suppression directive in a new test, so the change warrants human review.

Security architecture risk: External image Low · up to cc24c

The change aligns the installed command with the app’s WSL backend without introducing an arbitrary-command input. Risk is limited mainly to unfiltered failure diagnostics and incomplete evidence about execution identity and recovery behavior.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: New WSL failure handlers forward unfiltered stdout and stderr into desktop logging. With log export configured, private distro paths or unexpected diagnostic content can cross into a collector; the 500-character limit bounds volume but does not filter content.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Direct filesystem effects are scoped to the selected distro execution user’s launcher directories and runtime pointer. Existing renderer-accessible WSL settings can change the selected distro. Diagnostic effects can additionally reach a configured log collector. No new tenant-wide, cloud-IAM, or infrastructure authority was identified in these paths.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported privacy concern is conditional: a failed WSL operation produces diagnostic output, the new handler copies its trailing content into a warning, and configured log export can transmit it. Neither actual credential exposure nor an attacker-triggered compromise was demonstrated. Bootstrap secrets are excluded from the recorded command, which limits the strongest plausible leakage path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — CLI IPC accepts no command parameters. Its handlers and the inspected common registration path do not perform sender authorization, but those paths and the distro-setting handler are unchanged from the PR base. Existing backend startup already executed the same preflight-selected runtime commands in WSL. Higher-level renderer-origin enforcement remains unverified rather than established as absent.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Failed pointer replacement preserves the prior complete pointer, while missing targets fail closed instead of falling back to an arbitrary PATH executable. A stale executable can nevertheless remain selected after publication failure. This is a runtime-alignment limitation, not demonstrated privilege escalation or a verified security rollback failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep WSL failure logging to normalized operation, transport-failure category, and exit status. Treat access to raw distro diagnostics as a separate, explicitly controlled diagnostic path rather than exporting arbitrary output by default.

Reuse the login-shell PATH from a fresh install.

When no owned launcher exists, install_launcher probes the login-shell PATH, and REPORT probes it again. Each probe can wait up to 10 seconds, so a fresh install can spend about 20 seconds probing before the 30-second runWslShell timeout. This leaves little time for WSL startup. Installation changes the filesystem, not the PATH, so REPORT can scan the saved PATH without probing again.

Existing owned-launcher updates, state, and uninstall still perform one report probe.

updated the original branch at 11013ca517390eaba4871aa99268a3089153a90d, preserving @SunkenInTime's commits and merging current main. the original distro installer, atomic runtime pointer, node fallback, ownership protection, and settings behavior remain.

replaced the custom polling/process-group loop with coreutils timeout, removed duplicate spans, and replaced raw shell-output logging with exit/transport status. the timeout regression now blocks on a fifo and verifies that the recorded probe pid is gone, without depending on bash or a sleep. compared the original diff against the result; no installation behavior was dropped.

verification:

  • reproduced the bug with the existing wsl-only regression against current main: it returned a windows t3.cmd path instead of the distro path.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed passed formatting, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks, and 46 tests across four existing suites.
  • current-head github checks completed without failures. two independent gpt-6.1-sol reviews approved this exact head.
  • the new generated shell scripts execute in the tests, including runtime replacement, node fallback, foreign-command protection, uninstall, and timeout cleanup.

unverified: packaged windows/wsl execution and the desktop settings interaction. this linux vm cannot run the affected native path; dev builds hide the desktop CLI row, so no valid before/after screenshot or interaction recording was captured. before approval, install from settings with wsl-only enabled, run t3 --version and t3 pair in a fresh distro terminal, then remove it. confirm it uses the app's data and preserves any foreign command.

@SunkenInTime: retained known limits are the shared stable/nightly runtime pointer (last packaged app to start wins), and up to two bounded login-shell probes on a fresh install. the second probe can observe a PATH change when a profile conditionally adds the newly created bin directory. coderabbit was rate-limited on this push; its previous logging, timeout-test, and duplicate-span findings are addressed above. macroscope still requests human approval for this cross-layer change.

Verified in a real dev environment

no changed behavior could be verified in this linux boat vm. this is an environment limitation, not a passing verification.

i read the diff, description, commits, discussion and inline reviews, then checked out exact head 1c192eb2aa434b962fb5a3d619f8c31e38bfb0f9. the pr is open, and none of its six pr commits is authored by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. git.cafe and github both identify this as #22485. git.cafe reports 31 successful checks, zero failing and zero pending; those results do not prove runtime behavior.

actual environment probe:

text
1$ uname -srm
2Linux 6.8.0-117-generic x86_64
3$ node -p process.platform
4linux
5$ command -v wsl.exe

inspected environment and source-gate transcript

Not verified

  • original bug on main and corrected install/status/remove behavior on this head. the affected path is packaged windows desktop → settings → t3 command → desktop IPC → selected wsl distro. DesktopWslEnvironment.ts:1094 returns false outside windows. DesktopCliCommand.ts:221 reports unsupported for unpackaged builds, and line 259 rejects installation. DesktopBackendConfiguration.ts:630 records the runtime target only for packaged builds.
  • settings text and interaction. SettingsPanels.tsx:372 renders the row only with the native desktop bridge; a normal web dev server has no such bridge. no screenshots or recording were fabricated by injecting bridge state.
  • neighboring behavior: existing windows installation preservation, foreign-command protection, uninstall, runtime replacement and node fallback, and pairing against the same backend home.

because this vm cannot enter the changed path, i did not install dependencies, start main/pr servers, create provider turns, or substitute standalone shell tests for integration proof. no code changed, no checks were rerun, and no task processes remain.

required next check on a packaged windows build: enable wsl only and select a distro; install from settings; in a fresh distro terminal run command -v t3, t3 --version, and t3 pair, confirming the same backend/home as the app. restart after a runtime update and repeat. remove the launcher and confirm a foreign command and any prior windows install survive. repeat on main first to capture the original wrong-target install.
