The Pull Requests page could narrow the list by author, review and labels, but not by assignee, and there was no way to assign anyone from T3 Code.

Filter by assignee. A new assignee list filter (a login, me, or none) is applied by the host, so it reaches past the loaded page: assignee:/no:assignee on GitHub, assignee_username/assignee_id=None on GitLab. The web Filters menu gets an Assignee submenu (Anyone, Assigned to me, Unassigned, or someone from the list), and assignee: typed in the search box is read as the filter instead of a label name.

Assign from the summary. The summary tab gets an Assignees row with an assign menu, available to accounts with triage access. Fixes made while testing against a real GitLab instance:

  • The current assignees lead the menu on both hosts, read from the pull request itself. GitLab's users endpoint returns one page of 100, so before this an assignee past that page didn't appear and couldn't be unassigned.
  • When the first page isn't everyone, typing in the menu also asks the host to search (assignableUsers(query:) on GitHub, users?search= on GitLab), and the results are merged under the loaded matches.
  • GitLab Free keeps only the first id in assignee_ids. Newly chosen people are sent first, so assigning someone replaces the current assignee there instead of being silently dropped; where several assignees are allowed, everyone is kept.
  • After a change the candidates and the detail are read again, so the page doesn't keep showing an assignee the host replaced.

Not covered: mobile (no filter or Assignees row yet), and the reviewer menu's equivalent first-page limit, which I'll send separately.

Tested with focused unit tests for both hosts, the shared candidate merge and the query parser. The filter and the Assignees row were checked by hand in the web client against GitHub and a GitLab instance; the host search and the one-assignee GitLab behaviour are covered by unit tests only so far.

Screenshots

Names and titles are blurred (internal GitLab instance).

Typing in the menu also asks GitLab, which finds someone past the first page of 100: assignees-after-search

🟠 High state/pullRequests.ts:614

After unassigning a GitLab user found beyond the first candidates page, the menu still shows that user as assigned and clicking again sends another unassign: onSuccess refreshes assigneeCandidates and detail but leaves the mounted assigneeSearch result stale. Fixed: after a successful change the picker now refreshes the search result on screen, since search results are keyed by the query and the command can't reach them.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval β€” This PR adds a cross-cutting production workflow for filtering, assigning, and unassigning pull requests across the web UI, RPC contracts, authorization, caching, and GitHub/GitLab providers, including remote state mutations. Unresolved findings cover stale assignment state and misleading search errors, and the PR also changes an auth package.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

Pull requests now expose assignees on GitHub and GitLab. The change adds assignee filtering, candidate lookup, and assignment operations across provider APIs, server RPCs, client state, and web interfaces.

Changes: Pull request assignees

Layer / File(s)Summary
Assignee contracts and RPCs
packages/contracts/src/pullRequest.ts, packages/contracts/src/rpc.ts, packages/contracts/src/clientRpcPermissions.ts, packages/source-control-core/src/server/PullRequestProvider.ts, packages/contracts/src/pullRequest.test.ts
Shared contracts add assignee data, filtering, capability and permission fields, candidate and assignment inputs, and RPC definitions. Provider interfaces add optional assignee APIs.
GitHub assignee data and operations
packages/source-control-github/src/server/pullRequestListings.graphql*, packages/source-control-github/src/server/pullRequestReads.graphql*, packages/source-control-github/src/server/gitHubPullRequestJson*, packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubPullRequestApi*, packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubPullRequestProvider*
GitHub queries and mappings include assignees. The API supports assignee filters, candidate lookup, and assignment updates. Tests cover decoding, permissions, filtering, and operations.
GitLab assignee data and operations
packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/gitLabMergeRequestJson*, packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/GitLabPullRequestCli*, packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/GitLabPullRequestProvider*
GitLab decoding retains assignee actors and IDs. CLI and provider operations support filters, candidate lookup, and assignment updates. Tests cover filtering, candidate ordering, and updates.
Server authorization and service flow
apps/server/src/auth/RpcAuthorization.ts, apps/server/src/observability/RpcInstrumentation.ts, apps/server/src/pullRequest/PullRequestService*, apps/server/src/ws.ts
The service checks provider capability and viewer permissions, includes assignees in list and detail results, and invalidates assignment data. WebSocket handlers expose candidate lookup and assignment RPCs.
Client routing, queries, and assignment state
packages/client-runtime/src/pullRequestAssignees*, packages/client-runtime/src/pullRequestQuery*, packages/client-runtime/src/state/pullRequestRouting.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/pullRequests.ts, packages/client-runtime/package.json
Client runtime parses assignee qualifiers, routes the new RPCs, merges candidates, and updates candidate and detail caches after assignment changes.
Assignee filtering and detail controls
apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/*, apps/web/src/routes/_chat.pull-requests.tsx
The web UI adds assignee facets and filters, preserves assignee search state, and provides a candidate picker on pull-request details.

Merge Risk: πŸ”΅ Low Β· up to 87bb2

Assignee filtering and assignment appear mergeable with awareness that simultaneous updates from separate clients can overwrite an assignment. That concurrency case is tracked for follow-up.

Security architecture risk: πŸ”΅ Low Β· up to 868f5

Assignment requests remain tied to the selected repository and authenticated host account. GitHub has explicit triage checks; GitLab relies on host enforcement. Remaining uncertainty concerns GitLab permissions and concurrent assignment updates, rather than a demonstrated privilege escalation.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred β€” Each new request reaches candidate metadata for the selected repository or changes one pull request's assignee state using the routed host credential. GitLab's replacement write can affect the complete current assignee set, not only the identifier selected by the caller. The inspected operations do not modify repository roles, credentials, or deployment configuration.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed β€” Candidate lookup requires orchestration-read scope. Assignment is registered with source-control-write consent, and the command framework checks consent at both the origin and routed destination. Provider capability and viewer checks remain additional controls before host access.
  • inferred β€” GitLab candidate lookup is not proven to require assignment authority. However, the base already offered read-scoped reviewer lookup through the same project-users endpoint with viewer permission granted. The new host search expands discovery beyond the first page, but available evidence does not establish disclosure outside the selected credential's project visibility or a newly bypassed authorization control. Effective low-privilege host behavior remains a coverage gap.

Override invalid assignee URL values.

If the parent route retains ?assignee=123, this validator omits assignee instead of clearing it. PullRequestAssigneeFilter can then receive a number and call toLowerCase(), which can fail during render. Return assignee: undefined for invalid values.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟑 Minor | ⚑ Quick win

Show the host-search failure instead of "Nobody who can be assigned matches that."

The error prop uses only candidatesQuery.error. Here is how a host-search failure reaches the user:

  • The first page has truncated set, and the user enters a query.
  • searchResult fails, so searchResult.isPending is false.
  • No row from the loaded page matches the query, so candidates is empty.
  • The isPending expression evaluates to false.
  • The picker shows noMatchLabel.

The user then sees "Nobody who can be assigned matches that." when the host did not answer at all. Pass the search error when searchesHost is true and no candidates are visible.

Exclude results from the previous search query.

If the candidate list is truncated and a user changes a completed search, searchQuery retains the old text for 250 ms. Line 59 then passes the old host results to mergeAssigneeCandidates, which does not filter those results against the new query. The picker can show and select an unrelated candidate. Fixed in dc0463d092: host results are merged only once the debounced query matches what's typed, so rows from the previous search no longer show or get picked.

@TonybynMp4 Thanks for fixing this in dc0463d092. The query-match guard addresses the stale host results described in this finding.

Preserve the notice for truncated host-search results.

GitLab can return truncated: true for a nonempty assignee search. The current condition does not check that flag, so the picker can hide the notice when more matches exist. Include searchResult.data?.truncated in the condition.

Fixed in 20cfde9985: when the host search itself comes back truncated, the menu keeps the notice and asks to keep typing. The reviewer menu on #22489 got the same fix (051a7973dc).

@TonybynMp4 Thanks for fixing the truncated host-search notice in 20cfde9985 and applying the same fix to the reviewer menu in #22489.

Serialize assignee updates per merge request.

PullRequestService.setAssignees directly invokes the provider. The GitLab provider reads assigneeIds and sends the complete assignee_ids set. Concurrent calls can read the same set, and the later PUT can remove the earlier call’s assignment. Add keyed serialization for each merge request. If multiple server instances can handle the same request, use shared coordination or a conflict-aware update strategy.

Not changing this here. Client commands are already serialized per environment (concurrency: serialPerEnvironment on setAssignees), so one client can't race itself. GitLab offers no add/remove endpoint for assignees, only a replace of the whole set, and the existing reviewer and label writes use the same read-then-replace. Two separate clients or the GitLab UI writing at the same moment is still possible, but a server-side lock wouldn't cover the GitLab UI either. If we want that, it should be its own change across all three writes.

@TonybynMp4 Thanks for clarifying. serialPerEnvironment prevents one client from racing its own assignee updates. The remaining race concerns separate clients or external GitLab writes. A server-side lock would cover only the server-mediated writes.

I agree that concurrency handling across assignee, reviewer, and label updates belongs in a separate change. I won’t press for an assignee-only lock in this PR.

Would you like a follow-up GitHub issue for that broader work?

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, packages/client-runtime/src/state/pullRequests.ts configures setAssignees with concurrency: serialPerEnvironment, which prevents one client from racing its own assignee commands. GitLab assignee, reviewer, and label writes use read-then-replace operations. Cross-client concurrency handling should be considered across all three writes as separate work; server-side locks cannot coordinate external GitLab UI writes.

9
10Evaluate and mitigate lost updates across GitLab assignee, reviewer, and label mutations as separate reliability work.
11
12These mutations use read-then-replace operations. Two clients can read the same initial state, apply different changes, and send complete replacement sets. The later write can overwrite the earlier change.
13
14The client configures `setAssignees` with `concurrency: serialPerEnvironment`, which prevents one client from racing its own assignee commands. This does not coordinate separate clients. Server-side serialization can coordinate writes through that server, but cannot coordinate changes made directly in the GitLab UI.
15
16This issue is a follow-up to PR #22381, not a requirement for an assignee-only lock in that PR.
17
18## Required work
19
20- Audit the GitLab assignee, reviewer, and label read-then-replace flows.
21- Identify the supported server topology and concurrency boundaries.
22- Evaluate a consistent strategy across all three mutations. Consider keyed serialization for server-mediated writes and investigate host-supported conflict detection or other mitigations where available.
23- Document the remaining limits for external GitLab writes. Do not present server-side locking as protection against GitLab UI changes.
24- Implement the selected mitigation, or document the evidence and trade-offs if a safe mitigation is not available.
25
26## Affected areas
27
28- `packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/GitLabPullRequestCli.ts`: assignee and reviewer read-then-replace operations.
29- GitLab label mutation implementation.
30- `apps/server/src/pullRequest/PullRequestService.ts`: mutation dispatch and any server-side coordination.
31- `packages/client-runtime/src/state/pullRequests.ts`: existing client serialization.
32- Relevant provider and service tests.
33
34## Acceptance criteria
35
36- Deterministic tests demonstrate overlapping writes for assignees, reviewers, and labels.
37- The selected strategy has tests for the concurrency boundaries it claims to protect.
38- Existing add/remove behavior and GitLab single-assignee behavior remain intact.
39- Multi-server behavior and external GitLab UI limitations are documented.
40- Any remaining lost-update risk is explicit.

@TonybynMp4 Follow-up issue: #22545. It covers concurrent GitLab assignee, reviewer, and label updates as separate reliability work.

The issue exists, but assigning it to you failed because of an integration permission error. No change is required in this PR for that follow-up.

This PR does not currently meet the contribution guide's prior-approval requirement. Adds assignee filtering and assignment mutations on GitHub/GitLab. No explicit maintainer direction/scope approval is supplied for these new PR workflows. Please obtain explicit upstream maintainer approval of the direction and scope in the relevant Ideas discussion and link the approval comment when requesting reconsideration. For a substantial bug fix, establish the failure and intended behavior through maintainer issue triage. Verification and draft status do not replace that requirement.

Pushed 6793f59, following the Ideas discussion for assigning (https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/discussions/26746). Filtering is covered in https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/discussions/14336.

  • The assignee menu now saves when it closes, like GitLab's dropdown. Picks go into a draft, and closing sends the whole set in one request with one toast.
  • PR details carry the host's assignee limit. GitHub is 10. GitLab reads allowsMultipleAssignees over GraphQL, so it's 200 on paid tiers and 1 on Free. With a limit of 1 the label reads "Assignee" and a pick replaces the current one. At a higher limit, new rows are disabled once you reach it. Both providers also refuse a list over the limit.

The label and reviewer menus are unchanged. This waits on approval of the discussion, and I'm happy to split filtering and assigning into separate PRs.
