fix(web): dragging inside an inline HTML page no longer flickers and cancels#22338
Problem
Dragging inside an inline html_render page flickered and never worked; the same page dragged fine full screen. Measured in Chromium with real mouse input: picking up a row grows the page 28px, the bootstrap reports the new height, the inline frame resizes the iframe, and the iframe's window fires resize. The page cancels its drag on resize, as many drag scripts do, and snaps back, so the frame shrinks again. Each press runs one grow/cancel/shrink cycle. Full screen never resizes the frame, so it never cancels.
While a thread streams, a second problem appears: live-follow scrolls the frame out from under a held pointer (the frame top moved about 460px mid-drag), so the drop lands in the wrong place.
Change
- The bootstrap holds height reports while a trusted pointer is pressed and measures once after the last release. The frame keeps its height for the whole gesture, then fits as before.
pointercancelorblurends a hold whose release never arrives, so autofit can't get stuck. - The page also posts
t3/notifications/pointer-held.HtmlRenderDocumentturns it into the existingonFullscreenChangehold. That turns offmaintainScrollAtEndand keeps the row mounted until release, as full screen already does. The image viewer and the press now share one combined hold, so neither can clear the other's. A page can at most pause following for its own row, so the hold isn't gated on user activation, which a touch press doesn't have yet. - The page layout guide now tells agents to cancel gestures on resize only when the width changes. That covers keyboard drags, which a pointer hold can't.
The bootstrap is baked in at publish time, so already-published pages keep the old script until they're re-rendered. Mobile renders pages top-level and ignores the page's size reports, so it's unaffected. MCP App frames use their own bootstrap and are unchanged.
Scope and approval
A focused fix for an obvious bug: interactive html_render pages couldn't be dragged inline. It changes no settings, contracts or providers.
Verification
vp test run src/components/chat/HtmlRenderFrame.browser.test.tsx src/components/chat/HtmlRenderDialog.browser.test.tsx(apps/web): 9/9 passed, three runs in a row. The new test presses with real CDP mouse input on a page that grows on press and cancels on resize. It fails without the fix: a 260px size report arrives mid-press.vp test run src/htmlRender.test.ts(packages/shared): 29/29 passed.- A throwaway harness, not committed, re-bootstrapped the affected page and ran 10 real-mouse scenarios, all passing:
HtmlRenderFramealone, the fullMessagesTimelineidle, and streaming below the frame (the frame top stayed fixed through 21 streamed renders, and follow resumed after release). Controls with the old bootstrap still cancel. Normal autofit still grows the frame for a keyboard-opened<details>, timer growth, and growth during a press, which is reported once on release. - In a dev server's Browser panel, the page dragged inline with no size report and the frame held at 800px during the press; the old bootstrap resized it 800 β 827 β 800 mid-press. That panel's drag releases too quickly to show the cancel itself, so the held-press failure is covered by the tests above.

Merge Risk: External image Low Β· up to 4c0b4
A navigation during a drag can temporarily pin the timeline row and pause live-follow. Reset the hold when the iframe loads a new document.
Security architecture risk: External image Low Β· up to cc031
The change preserves page isolation and does not grant access to application credentials or privileged actions. Its effects are bounded to retaining one page row and pausing timeline following. Recovery remains uncertain when a pointer release is missed or the embedded document navigates while held.
Retained concerns
- Low Β· reliability Β· inferred: The new host hold has no independent recovery when the child misses its terminal event. An uncaptured outside release or document replacement that does not deliver blur could leave height reporting suppressed or the host hold active, retaining the row and disabling timeline following beyond the gesture. This is a bounded failure-containment concern, not a verified security exploit; browser-specific reproduction remains unresolved.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
- observed β A valid hold from the embedded page affects its originating timeline row. The timeline stores one selected fullscreen row ID, retains that row, and pauses list-wide following while the ID is set. This path does not confer service, environment, credential, or data-store authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred β Code in the iframe can directly post held:true without a genuine gesture and omit the matching false message. The bootstrap's trusted-event check cannot authenticate such messages to the parent. This newly permits indefinite row retention and a pause in timeline following without activation, but the inspected sink remains bounded UI state rather than a privileged action.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed β Current-frame source binding excludes unrelated windows from setting this component's hold. It identifies the embedded window, not trusted bootstrap code within that window. Unlike existing image requests, the new hold intentionally has no focus or activation requirement, accommodating touch initiation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed β Capture-phase release and cancellation listeners, child blur cleanup, and host effect cleanup on unmount provide recovery paths. The host iframe load handler does not reset pointerHeld, leaving recovery after document replacement dependent on child notifications or other lifecycle events.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed β Consider host-owned recovery tied to document replacement and a verified outside-release strategy, so a lost child event cannot indefinitely retain host lifecycle state. Any reset should preserve an independently active image hold and legitimate long gestures.

Explanation
The title names the main change: dragging inside an inline HTML page no longer flickers or cancels. The changeset holds iframe height reports during pointer presses, which matches the title's fix. The title uses the conventional commit format, is one sentence, and avoids vague wording.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section gives a clear reproduction and environment. The Change section explains the bootstrap hold, the pointer-held notification, and the layout guide update. Scope states it is a focused fix. Verification lists specific tests, runs, and results, plus a note on what was not checked. The description does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval in the Scope section, though the template asks for that. It also does not include before/after screenshots or a recording for a UI change, though it describes the timing behavior in detail. The model and harness line is present. The missing issue link and missing visual evidence are gaps, but the description is mostly complete, so the check passes.

@Zeus-Deus, your diagnosis and pointer hold fixed the right mechanism. i kept your commit, merged github/main, and updated the existing pr through 4c0b4f02e610fe4502ff3357cf35ec1a05b225e1.
height reports still wait during a press, and the timeline hold still combines with the image viewer. release cleanup now preserves pointer ids and covers the parent document, managed sibling frames, blur, and re-entry with no buttons pressed. normal and guest frames share one bridge. pages retain control of pointer capture. i kept main's current message listener and test lifecycle, and omitted the proposed layout-guide wording change.
verification:
- blacksmith: 21 focused tests, formatting, lint, both knip checks, and three react compiler checks passed. regression cases cover in-frame release, outside release, two touches, sibling frames, and guest frames. sibling and guest cases fail without their respective fixes, then pass with them.

held: true β false, and later growth resizes the frame from 297px to 415px. captures use a seeded tool result through the real attachment and frame path. uploaded clips play and seek. - all 28 pr checks passed on the final head, with no conflicts. the latest bot review reports no actionable comments; all three addressed inline threads are resolved. unverified: live-follow during provider streaming, a live guest-share URL, electron/native clients, physical touch, and relay/tunnel connections. browser tests exercise the actual guest component. existing published pages need rendering again to receive the new baked-in bootstrap.

Reset the hold when the iframe loads a new document.
The hook clears held only when the frame posts held: false. If the page navigates while a pointer is held, the new document starts with no pointer state and never posts held: false. One way this happens is implicit form submission, such as Enter in a text field, which sandbox="allow-scripts allow-forms" permits. A page script that navigates during a press can also cause it. The parent keeps pointerHeld true, so BrowserDocumentFrame keeps onFullscreenChange(true) active. The timeline row stays pinned and live-follow stays paused until the next real press in the new document, or until unmount. GuestHtmlRender uses the same hook, so it has the same behavior.
Reset the hold on the iframe's load event. This clears a hold left by a navigation once the replacement document loads. The frame element is mounted for the component's lifetime, so the listener is attached to the element that navigates.
