Problem

Mobile still uses the agent's preview height for inline HTML pages after #22131 added live content fitting on web and desktop. A page advertised as 400px stays cropped at 400px even when its content is over 2,300px tall, with the next chat message immediately below the crop.

Change

Extend the existing inline WebView message bridge to report intrinsic content height and feed it into the shared sizing helper, including its 20,000px cap. Resize, load, font, and filtered mutation events update the frame as content grows or shrinks; reports are coalesced and deduplicated. When the viewport fits but the root box excludes positioned overflow, measure descendant bounds with ancestor clipping instead of dropping back to the smaller root box.

Let LegendList measure HTML rows instead of overriding them with a fixed preview size, so the following message moves with the page. Clear the live measurement on load errors and WebView process restarts so replacement pages and unavailable pages use the preview fallback. Fullscreen keeps its existing scrolling behavior. Update MCP tool guidance to describe content fitting on mobile as well as web and desktop.

Scope and approval

Focused mobile parity fix for the established behavior in #22131, which is already merged; no stacking dependency. The fixed preview size is the underlying bug in both the inline frame and list row. No new setting, contract, native dependency, or gesture-lock behavior. The existing Android WebView patch remains necessary for pages taller than the 20,000px fit cap: those pages still overflow vertically and need to hand edge drags back to the feed. Ordinary fitted pages bypass that patched path.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/mobile/src/features/threads/html-render-webview-bridge.test.ts packages/shared/src/htmlRender.test.ts — 46 tests passed after rebasing onto main at 9179178f. Runs the injected bridge with controlled geometry/events for growth, shrink, width changes, font/load events, deduplication, positioned overflow after viewport growth, clipped/fixed/hidden descendants, text overflow, and malformed messages; shared tests cover height precedence and the cap.
  • vp run --filter @t3tools/mobile typecheck — passed.
  • Changed-file lint and formatting — passed; lint reports existing warnings in untouched ThreadFeed code.
  • Built native clients with mobile-native-client.ts ensure and tested Pixel 10 Pro / Android 15 and iPhone 17 Pro / iOS 26.5 against isolated backend data. Signed HTML attachments fit beyond the preview; compact/expand resize the row; conversation scrolling reaches END OF PAGE before AFTER THE PAGE; fullscreen return preserves the inline page. iOS also updates the existing page on a light/dark theme change.
  • Follow-up regression pass: a positioned element ending at 1,800px stays fitted on Android and iOS, then collapse/expand shrink and restore the row. Executing the actual bridge in a browser feedback loop reports 900px on initial overflow and after fitting, then 100px after removing the positioned element.
  • Existing fit-model limitation: historical pages whose height depends on their viewport can grow toward the shared 20,000px cap, then scroll inside the frame. This matches web/desktop. Publishing rejects viewport-height units, and the authoring guide warns against height:100% on html or body; this PR adds no mobile-only feedback heuristic.
  • Phone portrait captures only. Tablet/split layouts, physical-device gestures, and relay/tunnel routes were not verified. Android orientation automation could not confirm rotation. An existing iOS LinkingContext development warning was dismissed before capture; this change does not alter navigation.

Same fixture, device, theme, portrait dimensions, and conversation-end position before/after. Captures are cropped to the chat viewport to omit device headers.

🟠 High threads/html-render-webview-bridge.ts:8

When a positioned descendant extends beyond normal-flow content, contentHeight alternates between the overflow height and the root’s smaller bounding-box height as ThreadHtmlRender resizes the viewport, making the inline page and following messages jump repeatedly. Once scrollHeight equals clientHeight, this conditional switches to the bounding box and loses the positioned overflow; measure that overflow independently of the viewport before using the smaller fallback.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This changes the default mobile inline-HTML experience: pages now resize to live content and can substantially change thread-row and scroll behavior instead of remaining at the preview height. The implementation adds a nontrivial WebView measurement bridge and dynamic feed sizing, so the production behavior warrants human review.

Walkthrough

The change adds a shared WebView bridge for HTML content height and overflow updates. ThreadHtmlRender uses reported content height for frame sizing, and HTML render feed entries use dynamic sizing.

Changes: HTML render sizing

Layer / File(s)Summary
Measure and validate HTML render updates
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/html-render-webview-bridge.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/html-render-webview-bridge.test.ts
The inline script measures content height and overflow, suppresses duplicate messages, and schedules remeasurement after browser events. The parser validates incoming messages. Tests cover measurements, event-triggered updates, and invalid payloads.
Connect bridge reports to thread feed sizing
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/HtmlRenderWebView.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/html/tools.ts
HtmlRenderWebView uses the shared bridge and forwards validated content height. ThreadHtmlRender uses that height for frame sizing. HTML render feed entries use dynamic sizing and an attachment-based key. HtmlRenderTool documents the initial frame height and live content-height replacement.

Some HTML pages can expand into an excessively tall feed row, so the viewport-feedback safeguard should be addressed before merge.

Security architecture risk: External image Low · up to 65ac5

Inline pages can now resize their message rows, but reported sizes are validated and bounded. Existing publication permissions and navigation controls remain unchanged. Recovery-time sizing behavior is not fully established.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly added influence reaches a reader's inline attachment frame and surrounding feed layout. In the inspected message handler, height reports do not invoke publication, credential access, or another privileged operation. The publication handler continues to act as the caller and require thread scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Page-originated messages cross into native layout state only after the parser checks the expected type, boolean overflow flags, and finite positive height. The frame helper then clamps height to 80–20,000 pixels. These are shape and magnitude controls, not proof that the page reported its true geometry.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Measurement coalescing and deduplication reduce ordinary event-driven bridge traffic, while the frame cap limits geometric growth. These controls do not establish a general message-rate or CPU limit for hostile page code.

Prevent viewport-driven fit feedback from repeatedly resizing the row.

When scrollHeight remains innerHeight + k for a positive k, each frame resize can produce a larger report. Deduplication does not stop the sequence, so the row can grow to HTML_RENDER_MAX_FIT_HEIGHT.

The proposed equal-overshoot guard is too broad. It can suppress legitimate responsive growth when the viewport and measured content height increase while their positive difference stays constant. Use a safeguard that identifies frame-driven growth, or enforce the existing restriction on viewport-relative content. Add regression tests for both the loop and legitimate same-overshoot growth.

The innerHeight + k case is a known limitation of the content-fit model introduced by #22131. This mobile parity PR keeps that contract: HTML_RENDER_LAYOUT_GUIDE requires intrinsic height and warns against height:100% on html/body; HtmlRender.prepare rejects vh/svh/lvh/dvh units. I reran the focused rejection test successfully.

Historical/nonconforming pages can still grow toward the shared 20,000px cap, where vertical inner scrolling remains available. I've explicitly documented this limitation in the PR. Neither commit contains an equal-overshoot guard. Adding a mobile-only heuristic would change the established model and can suppress valid responsive, font, or asynchronous content growth. I'm retaining parity here; broader validation of viewport-dependent HTML belongs in the shared publication/fit behavior.

The separate positioned-content oscillation was fixed in 64a7b54, with a real browser resize-feedback reproduction, regression tests, and Android/iOS verification. Macroscope has automatically resolved that finding.

@PixPMusic Thanks for clarifying the shared contract. The innerHeight + k case is an existing content-fit limitation, not a mobile-specific regression. A mobile-only heuristic could suppress valid content growth. I withdraw this finding.

The positioned-content oscillation is a separate issue and does not change this conclusion.

Would you like a follow-up issue for shared validation of viewport-dependent HTML?

@coderabbitai I found the explicit maintainer decision behind this boundary. In #22131, Theo declined broadening the guard: it targets common agent mistakes, with HTML_RENDER_MAX_FIT_HEIGHT bounding cases that slip through. CodeRabbit withdrew that finding and recorded the intended scope.

This mobile port reuses that validation and cap. The distinct positioned-content oscillation is fixed in 64a7b54 and was verified in a browser feedback loop and both native clients. There is no equal-overshoot heuristic in this branch. Please assess the remaining viewport-dependent case against the established maintainer decision above.

@PixPMusic Thanks for clarifying the maintainer decision. I checked both linked comments in #22131.

The validation intentionally targets common agent mistakes, not all viewport-dependent CSS. The maintainer explicitly accepted HTML_RENDER_MAX_FIT_HEIGHT as the 20,000px bound for cases that pass validation.

This confirms the shared contract described in the supplied learning. The remaining viewport-dependent case does not justify a mobile-only safeguard or broader validation in this PR. I withdraw this finding. The separate positioned-content oscillation does not change that assessment.

The latest CodeRabbit review covers 2273c59e7494a87a9dffdf2a1fcb430d29cc3996 and reports no actionable comments. Its merge-risk summary still repeats the viewport-feedback concern that was withdrawn in this thread after checking Theo’s decision in #22131.

This mobile port preserves the shared intrinsic-height authoring contract, common viewport-unit validation, and 20,000px frame cap. Historical viewport-dependent pages can reach that cap and scroll internally; this limitation is documented in the PR. The separate positioned-content oscillation is fixed, and both load errors and WebView process restarts now clear the retained measurement. No additional mobile-only growth heuristic is needed for parity with the accepted shared behavior.

@PixPMusic i kept your implementation and commits, merged current main, and pushed the takeover fixes to this branch. main still had both preview-height caps; i found no focused overlapping fix. the final diff still covers the same five files. main's shorter tool guidance is preserved while describing mobile content fitting.

review found additional grow/shrink loops around positioned pseudo-elements and body overflow propagated to the viewport. the bridge now preserves that overflow, including positioned root pseudo-elements, and reports cleared pages so the shared 80px minimum applies. the existing test file covers these regressions; no new test files or dependencies were added. fullscreen and the existing native gesture patch remain unchanged.

verification:

  • blacksmith: 50 focused bridge/shared tests passed. the new regression cases failed before their fixes.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, graphql, mobile/server/scripts typechecks, and adjacent tests passed. existing warnings remain in unchanged feed code.
  • chrome executed the actual injected scripts with the same original fixture at 390px width: main stayed at 400px; the candidate fitted to 2,484px, compacted to 359px, and restored 2,484px. positioned overflow stayed at 900px, then shrank to 100px after removal. clearing the page reached the client minimum of 80px.
  • ci: all checks completed without failures on 2fbf805295c738ea9d383fdb1cd96bc7712f33db. macroscope correctness passed; approvability requires human review. coderabbit remains paused and has not reviewed the takeover commits.

unverified: this vm has no attached native device. native feed-row placement, touch/gesture handoff, fullscreen return, theme changes, rotation/tablet layouts, and relay/tunnel paths need native regression verification and maintainer approval. the original contributor's native captures remain in the pr body, but were not reproduced here. chrome evidence below verifies the bridge and fixture only; viewport resizing emulates the native height callback. the recording shows fixture interactions in a fixed browser viewport, not a native client.

main bridge: original fixture capped at 400px

candidate bridge: same fixture fitted to 2484px

Verified in a real dev environment

No changed app behavior could be verified on this Linux Boat VM. Inspected the description, complete diff, commit authors, discussion, and checks for head 2fbf805295c738ea9d383fdb1cd96bc7712f33db. The PR is open, and its PR commit list contains no commits authored by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. GitCafe maps this to https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/22274. Reported CI is 31 successful, zero failing, zero pending; this is not runtime proof.

The changed runtime path is React Native ThreadFeed -> ThreadHtmlRender -> HtmlRenderWebView: live height reports resize inline HTML and allow the list to measure its row. The server change describes that behavior in MCP guidance; it does not add a browser implementation of the mobile path.

Attempted the repository's native verification prerequisite:

text
1device_list
2Agent device access is turned off for this environment.

The mobile verification skill requires stopping when device access is unavailable. No substitute browser harness or mocked WebView was used. No screenshots or recording were captured because no changed client behavior could be exercised. No code, branches, labels, or PR metadata were changed. No dev servers were started.

Not verified

Main's original mobile clipping, PR live growth/shrink and following-row placement, positioned overflow, fullscreen return, theme updates, load-error/restart fallback, the 20,000px cap and nested scrolling all remain unverified. Neither Android nor iOS was available through the required device tooling. No main worktree, install, provider turn, or PR server was started after discovering this prerequisite blocker. Web Playwright checks would not exercise the changed native WebView or LegendList sizing.

To verify, enable an Android device host, then run main and this exact head sequentially against isolated state, create a project and Codex gpt-6.1-sol turn through the app, publish intrinsic-height HTML with interactive growth/shrink, and inspect inline row placement plus fullscreen and overflow behavior. Capture matching main/PR screenshots and an interaction recording. iOS and remote/relay/tunnel paths also remain unverified.

Result: unverifiable, not a runtime pass or a demonstrated defect.

Verified on Android emulator (API 35) against a real dev server

Verified head 2fbf805295c738ea9d383fdb1cd96bc7712f33db in T3 Code Dev on the t3 Android emulator, API 35, 1080x2400 portrait. Installed the matching native client from the shared cache, ran the PR backend on port 13773 with isolated .t3 state and Metro on 8081, reversed both ports with adb, and paired the native app. Created a real project and two threads through the server CLI. Both Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns completed through the local proxy; the first published the signed HTML attachment with the real html_render tool. No mocked provider, demo database, or replacement WebView was used.

Reproduced the original crop using github/main at 0160c448f61bf24244411781ccc47829a1a51a17, its matching cached native client, and Metro on 8082 against the same backend and exact same conversation/attachment. With the expanded page advertised at 400px, main shows section 1 and a sliver of section 2 immediately before AFTER THE PAGE. The PR fits all six sections and positioned overflow ending at 2300px before that reply. Both screenshots show the conversation end on the same emulator, theme, and dimensions.

On the PR, tapping Compact shrinks the native feed row and moves the following reply up beneath END OF PAGE. Expand restores the full page; swiping on the inline page scrolls the conversation to section 6, the footer, positioned overflow, and then the reply. The expanded page remains stable while scrolling. Fullscreen opens and scrolls; Android Back returns to the inline page.

No code changes were needed. Existing head CI reports 31 successful checks, zero failing, zero pending. This runtime pass supplements those checks. The emulator crashed once during the main comparison bundle load; restarting with 2 GiB guest memory and two cores allowed the comparison and final native recording.

main: expanded HTML cropped before the following reply

pr: section 6, footer, and positioned overflow precede the reply

pr: compact page shrinks and the following reply moves up

android compact, expand, feed scroll, fullscreen, and back recording

Not verified

iOS cannot run on this Linux VM. Physical-device gestures, rotation/tablet/split layouts, theme changes, load-error/WebView-process-restart fallback, empty-page/root-pseudo-element edge cases, pages above the 20,000px cap and their nested scroll handoff, and relay/tunnel routes were not exercised. Web and desktop were outside this native verification pass. No claim of merge readiness; this does not resolve the branch's current-base conflicts or replace maintainer approval.
