Summary

Changing the default model's effort in Settings could replace the saved model. The Model row displayed resolveDefaultProviderModelSelection, which substitutes another ready provider when the saved one is turned off, unavailable, or missing. The effort control then wrote that substitute, including at All environments scope.

The row now keeps the saved model, notes that its provider is turned off, unavailable, or not on this environment, and hides effort until that provider can run. Choosing a different model on purpose still works.

Verification

Base 3b95e7831b11b17627dff16843bc087bfca397ec (upstream/main). Head 1ce968ca29b12436b1b089c5ea1c1cf1814bc579. Node v26.12.1. Linux 6.12.94+ x86_64.

git diff --shortstat upstream/main...HEAD — 6 files changed, 281 insertions, 18 deletions (299 changed lines).

The hidden-model sequence saves Opus 5.5, hides it, turns Claude off, and returns to General. Settings still store claudeAgent / claude-opus-5-5 and the row says Claude is turned off. The trigger showed Claude Sonnet 5.5 before and Claude Opus 5.5 after. retainedModelWhileProviderLocked asserts that the trigger label is Opus 5.5 when the provider is turned off or unavailable, and that it stays unset when the provider can run, so the first visible option remains the fallback. The redundant effort helper and its three tests were removed per review.

Limitations: General settings, light theme, default viewport, with the saved provider turned off and Opus hidden. Project scope, multiple environments, a missing provider, narrow width, and dark theme were not captured.

Real web app (vp run dev per worktree), isolated .t3 seeded with vp run migrate-dev-db plus .evidence/pr-22193/seed.mjs; driver, seed and diff scripts are in .evidence/pr-22193/. Each recording has a timestamped steps file; defaultModelSelection was read from settings.json after each run (persisted.log).

What else changed

  • Nothing beyond the fix. At 390 px the new note wraps to its own line and pushes later Settings rows down about 22 px, with no overflow.
  • Composer diffs (including the healthy control) come from the two checkouts, not the PR: detached HEAD shows "Select ref" in the git panel, and the draft age differs (29m vs 30m). The composer trigger is identical in both builds.
  • While the saved provider is off, effort can no longer be edited in Settings (the picker is hidden).
  • The unavailable note uses the instance id ("claudeAgent is unavailable."), not the display name.
  • Residual gap (R1f): a saved model hidden via hiddenModels on a healthy provider is still replaced when effort changes, in both builds.

Environment: Ubuntu 24.04.5, Linux 6.1.102; dev servers on Node v26.12.1 (vp run dev), drivers on Node v24.22.1; Playwright 1.60.0 headless Chrome for Testing 148.0.7778.96; 1440×900 and 390×844 at DPR 1, light and dark.

Verification log
  • Proof audit pass 1 (claude-opus-5-5): fixture matrix derived from the diff (matrix.md). Settings → General → Model is the only changed write path; the composer never writes the saved default.
  • Proof audit pass 2 (claude-opus-5-5): SUFFICIENT. Frames extracted at narrated timestamps matched the steps files and persisted.log for all 9 rows; still attributions checked. R1a rebuilt from the committed scripts in both builds; final values matched pass 1. Notes: SHAs appear on still captions, not in the mp4s (the rebuild ties R1a to them); R1e was run four times, all unchanged.
  • Tests: vp test run src/components/chat/ProviderModelPicker.logic.test.ts src/components/settings/ProjectDefaultsSettings.logic.test.ts (apps/web): 2 files, 8 tests passed.
  • Evidence commits: f2ded46 adds .evidence/pr-22193/; a4578c8 switches its imports to namespace style after Lint flagged them on f2ded46 (vpr lint exits 0 locally). No changes to app code.
  • CI: pending on a4578c8 at the time of writing.
  • Unverified: matrix rows P1 (composer trigger label when the saved model is missing from a turned-off provider; the draft resolved to Codex in both builds) and R3b (still); the provider-status race before the server catches up is covered only by the unit test. Mobile and desktop shell not touched by the diff.
  • Model/harness: Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5) via Claude Code in T3 Code; step agents claude-opus-5-5 via T3 delegate_task.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a4578

The change keeps the saved default model when its provider is off or unavailable. The remaining open items are small robustness and permission gaps in the added evidence scripts, plus one unverified picker edge case. Address or accept them before merging; none is likely to break the shipped settings behavior.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e37e9

The change protects saved choices from accidental replacement without expanding access or changing how settings are saved.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An effort edit can affect every connected environment selected by the existing scope. The PR changes which saved selection supplies that value, but does not expand the target set, privileges, or settings ownership.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The change prevents a runtime fallback provider from becoming authoritative saved configuration solely through an effort edit. Explicit model replacement continues through the existing picker callback and validated settings mutation path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing client command configures serial settings updates per environment. Server persistence also serializes updates, reloads current state before applying a patch, rejects parse failures, and uses an atomic-write helper before publishing the new state. Its protected persistence block attempts secret-change rollback on materialization or write failure. These controls are unchanged by the selection fix.

Add coverage for an absent provider with no model options.

When no active entry or model option exists, ProviderModelPicker displays props.model. The existing missing-entry test supplies a fallback option, so it does not cover this branch. Add a case with options: [], includeEntry: false, and a saved model, then assert that the saved model label is rendered. This is a useful regression test, not a current production defect.

  • Merge branch 'main' into cursor/default-model-effort-164448952d19

Reproduced the original issue on Linux in the real web app at ed9b7ca9: saved Claude Opus 5.5 → disabled Claude → changed the displayed Codex effort to High → re-enabled Claude. Persisted default remained Codex GPT-6-Astra High. Main recording.

At PR head 8952d199, the 10 focused logic tests pass locally. I also merged that head with current main locally, without publishing or changing the contributor branch. The ordinary disabled-provider flow preserves Opus and hides effort; re-enabling restores the same model. Integration recording.

One remaining display mismatch is reproducible on that integration: save Opus 5.5, hide it using its model-picker visibility switch, then disable Claude and return to General. Settings still stores claudeAgent / claude-opus-5-5, but the row says “Claude is turned off” and displays Sonnet 5.5. ProviderModelPicker falls back to the first visible option even though the presentation resolver retained Opus. Keep the retained selection visible while locked, without changing the existing hidden-model fallback when the provider is usable. This is a display gap; effort remains hidden, so this sequence does not overwrite the saved model.

Hidden-model recording.

Saved Opus is displayed as Sonnet while Claude is disabled

Environment: Chrome 154 on Linux, 1280×800 CSS pixels, DPR 2, light theme, default browser font scaling, no device emulation. These are targeted interaction recordings, not the complete before/after proof set. Remaining proof matrix: unavailable/missing provider, project scope, multiple environments, narrow width and dark theme remain unverified.

Both independent reviews returned FIX_FIRST. The cross-provider effort helper is also redundant under the component’s effort-lock guard; the original callback can remain after removing that helper and its three unreachable-state tests. No sensitive-surface changes found. CI currently has 27 successful checks.

GitCafe checkout cannot resolve this cross-fork PR’s source repository (DOMAIN_FAILURE: The server did not provide the source repository for this cross-fork pull request; feedback fb_6ehfzdtl25w4). Existing commits are preserved; no replacement PR was opened.

@juliusmarminge Both points are addressed in 1ce968ca2:

  • The picker now keeps showing the saved model (for example, Opus) while its provider is turned off or unavailable. When the provider can run, it still falls back to the first visible option.
  • I removed the redundant effort helper and its three tests, so effort changes go through the original callback again.

Verification and the before/after captures are updated in the description.

Fail when image comparison fails.

If compare cannot read a screenshot, || true treats the error as an expected difference. The script can then report success without a valid diff image. Accept only the expected “images differ” exit status, and stop if compare or montage fails. ImageMagick distinguishes comparison errors from differing images by exit status. (legacy.imagemagick.org)

Create $out before redirecting output into it.

The shell opens "$out/$row-before.out" before node starts. run-row.mjs creates outDir only after it starts (mkdirSync at its Line 33). If $out does not exist, such as on the first run with the default /tmp/ev-22193, the redirect fails. The node command does not run. The script then reports a nonzero exit for both builds on every row, and nothing is recorded.

Add mkdir -p "$out" before the loop.

Guard malformed PID files before sending signals.

Number("") is 0, so an empty PID file can make process.kill(-pgid, "SIGTERM") target the caller’s process group. This is a narrow race: run-row.mjs and stills.mjs stop the server before starting it, but an interrupted startServer write can leave an empty file for a later stop, and stop.mjs can race with startup. Validate that pgid is a positive safe integer before either signal. Write the PID file through a temporary file and rename it atomically.
