Problem

A one-time pairing code is issued as 12 uppercase characters, and the server matches it byte for byte. A code typed in lowercase gets 401 from /oauth/token, and the client shows "The environment credential is invalid." The mobile Add Environment code field sets autoCapitalize="none", so typing the code shown on the desktop gives lowercase letters unless the user holds Shift for each one.

Repro on main: run t3 auth pairing create, then in Settings > Connections > Add environment enter the host and the code in lowercase. It is rejected. The same code in uppercase pairs.

Change

PairingGrantStore.consume uppercases the credential before the pairing-link lookup when it has the issued format: 12 characters from the pairing alphabet, in any case. The pattern is built from the existing PAIRING_TOKEN_ALPHABET and PAIRING_TOKEN_LENGTH. Both the consuming UPDATE and the lookup that explains a failure use the folded value.

Seeded desktop bootstrap credentials and rotating desktop tokens are checked before this step and still match exactly. A lowercase credential that is not in the pairing format, such as a hex bootstrap token, passes through unchanged. No client, contract or schema change.

Scope and approval

Part of #4889 (its 2026-10-09 triage comment asked whether it was still relevant; the +1 on 2026-10-16 confirms it is). That issue reports manual pairing rejecting a code that was typed differently from how it was issued. This PR fixes only the letter case part. It does not strip separators (the placeholder no longer suggests hyphens), and it does not touch the false timeout the issue also reports, so it does not close the issue.

It qualifies as a small focused fix of an obvious bug. The server issues codes in one case and rejects the same code in the other, and the production change is 11 added and 2 changed lines in the function that matches the code.

Prior PRs: #7123 by @Rishet11 normalized a typed code (case, dashes and spaces) in the web and mobile clients and was closed under the verification requirement, asking for before/after screenshots and a recording of code entry and successful pairing. Its review also showed that uppercasing on the client breaks the lowercase hex desktop bootstrap credential, which shares the /pair field. This PR moves the fix to the server, limits it to the pairing-code format, and adds the browser recording below. Credit to @Rishet11 for the original diagnosis.

Verification

New tests in apps/server/src/auth/PairingGrantStore.test.ts:

  • "accepts a one-time token typed in lowercase": issues a token, consumes it in lowercase, then checks that the uppercase original is rejected because the token was used.
  • "matches a seeded desktop bootstrap credential exactly": a seeded lowercase credential that fits the pairing format still matches only in its own case.

With main's PairingGrantStore.ts and the new tests: 1 failed, 11 passed (UnknownBootstrapCredentialError on the lowercase consume). With this change: 12 passed.

Test run on main with the new tests: the lowercase test fails; on this branch all 12 pass

Other checks, from apps/server on Linux x64, Node 24.22.0:

  • vp test run src/auth/: 12 files, 125 tests passed.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit: exit 0, no diagnostics for the changed files.
  • vp fmt --check and vp lint on both files: clean.

Browser check, driven through T3's browser panel. The client is a dev build of this branch at localhost. The target is a second server on 127.0.0.1:41500 with fresh state, run from main and then from this branch. Each target issued its own code with the CLI:

The CLI issues an uppercase code on main and on this branch

Before, main as the target. The lowercase code is rejected (POST /oauth/token 401). The same code in uppercase then pairs, so the code itself was valid:

Main: the lowercase code is rejected with "The environment credential is invalid."

Main: the same code in uppercase adds demo-server

Recording on main: lowercase rejected, then uppercase accepted

After, this branch as the target. The lowercase code pairs (POST /oauth/token 200) and demo-server shows Connected:

Branch: the code typed in lowercase

Branch: demo-server added and Connected

Recording on this branch: lowercase code entry and successful pairing

Not checked:

  • iOS and Android clients. The fix is on the server, so every client benefits, but I did not pair from a phone.
  • A pairing URL (/pair#token=) with a lowercased token. It goes through the same consume call, but I only drove the manual form.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes production authentication behavior by accepting lowercase versions of issued pairing codes while preserving exact matching for seeded credentials, with regression coverage for both paths. Because the change is in the authentication package and broadens credential acceptance, it warrants human review.

Walkthrough

PairingGrantStore uppercases credentials that match the pairing-token format before consuming and looking up pairing links. Tests cover lowercase one-time-token use, single-use behavior, and exact-case matching for seeded desktop bootstrap credentials.

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Attacker-controlled input gains additional case representations for existing pairing credentials, not additional grant authority. Issuance still generates credentials from the same uppercase alphabet, and successful consumption inherits the selected row’s stored subject and scopes.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Pairing-code shape is not sufficient for authentication. The persistence UPDATE still requires a matching credential, no revocation or prior consumption, a future expiry, the required proof-key binding, and requested-scope eligibility before marking the link consumed.
  • inferred — Concurrent or repeated case variants converge on the same credential before the atomic UPDATE. The consumed_at condition preserves single-use behavior, while the subsequent lookup only explains rejection and cannot issue a grant.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The direct browser-session and access-token exchange paths consume the credential before downstream issuance, without local compensating restoration. An issuance failure can therefore leave a link spent; this ordering predates the PR and is not a newly introduced recovery weakness.

Ensure the lowercase test uses a token containing a letter.

issueOneTimeToken() can generate an all-digit token. For that token, toLowerCase() returns the original value, so the test can pass if case normalization is removed. Issue tokens until one contains an alphabetic character.

thanks @only21mil. kept your format-limited server-side folding and exact desktop credential matching. merged current main without rewriting your commits, shortened the normalization comment, and folded lowercase coverage into the existing single-use test. deterministic letter-containing tokens address the earlier all-digit test concern without a retry loop. the final diff remains two files.

verification:

  • current main: the consolidated regression failed with UnknownBootstrapCredentialError (1 failed, 6 passed). chrome rejected the lowercase code with 401; oauth rejected lowercase while accepting the original uppercase code.
  • updated source: all 26 focused tests in PairingGrantStore, EnvironmentAuth, and auth/http passed through blacksmith. vp run check:changed HEAD passed format, lint, knip, graphql validation, affected typechecks, and adjacent tests. the checked files are byte-identical to this commit.
  • chrome accepted the exact lowercase code rejected before. oauth issued a usable access token for lowercase, then rejected the original code as already consumed.
  • two independent gpt-6.1-sol reviews found no defects at 55bf8d46e8904ac43b9fafc44bac3b6457b0a103.
  • github ci passed build/typecheck, lint, all eight server test shards, the test aggregate, and the final check. platform-inapplicable jobs skipped. coderabbit could not review this head because the organization review budget is exhausted; its check is green with that limitation. human approval of the auth change remains outstanding.

unverified: native mobile, desktop builds, remote/tunnel connections, and opening a lowercased pairing url. no client, contract, or schema changes.

before and after use the same manual pairing form, code, viewport, and environment data. loading waits are trimmed from the recordings; these are functional checks, not timing measurements.

before: lowercase code rejected on main

after: the same lowercase code opens the app

Verified in a real dev environment

Verified unchanged head 55bf8d46e8904ac43b9fafc44bac3b6457b0a103 on this Linux Boat VM. No fix or push was needed.

  • Reproduced on github/main (5e9d56416f) in a separate /home/user/main worktree after vp i. The real web pairing form rejected a CLI-issued code typed in lowercase. The same code in uppercase authenticated and opened the app.
  • Checked out the exact PR head, ran vp i, and started vp run dev in the background with isolated .t3 state. Ports were web 5733/server 13773; main used 8693/16733. Drove the actual web app with the repository's Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome.
  • Lowercase entry in /pair authenticated successfully. Through that authenticated UI, added a project pointing at the real /home/user/main Git checkout, selected Codex gpt-6.1-sol, and submitted a real provider turn. The provider ran rg -m 1 '^#' README.md and replied pairing verification passed. No mocks, fixtures, or demo turns were used.
  • Paired again with another lowercase code and reopened the persisted provider conversation. The recording shows code entry, successful pairing, and that conversation.
  • Neighboring behavior: uppercase OAuth exchange still returned 200; reusing the uppercase original after lowercase consumption returned 401. Reusing the code consumed by the web client also returned 401.
  • Blacksmith: all 26 tests in PairingGrantStore.test.ts, EnvironmentAuth.test.ts, and auth/http.test.ts passed. vp run check:changed 7510e5e43c6cb40d454530c9aaa9a8fbb43ab1bf passed format, lint, both knip passes, GraphQL validation, affected typechecks, and adjacent tests after fetching the missing shallow-worker history. Existing PR checks report 28 successful, 0 failing, 0 pending.

Running-server transcript (tokens omitted):

text
1POST /oauth/token, issued code lowercased 200
2GET /api/auth/clients, using the issued bearer 200
3POST /oauth/token, uppercase original after consumption 401 invalid_credential
4POST /oauth/token, original consumed by web pairing 401 invalid_credential

Before: main rejects a valid issued code in lowercase. Main and head use separately issued real codes; this is a server authentication change, with no styling change.

main: lowercase pairing code rejected

After: the lowercase-paired session completes a real Codex turn in the project added through the UI.

pr head: real gpt-6.1-sol turn after lowercase pairing

lowercase code entry, successful pairing, and reopening the provider conversation

Inspected the captures and checked uploaded video playback through the T3 preview player, including seeking. The recording is functional evidence, not a performance measurement.

Not verified

  • Native iOS/Android and packaged desktop clients: this VM is Linux and no native client was exercised.
  • Remote/relay/tunnel connections, the Settings add-environment form, and lowercased /pair#token= links: this pass drove the local web manual pairing form and real OAuth endpoint.
  • Seeded/rotating desktop bootstrap credentials were not exercised in a desktop runtime; exact-case behavior is covered by the passing auth tests.

Verification performed with gpt-6.1-sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.
