Active threads in the current sidebar keep their creation/re-entry or saved arrangement order, while their age labels show the last user message. A row showing 3m can therefore sit below one showing 10h, with no way to sort by that label. The legacy sidebar offers message sorting, but switching to it loses the current sidebar's Settle controls and settled shelf.

This adds an opt-in Last message order to the current sidebar and mobile thread list. Configured order remains the default.

  • Web and desktop: Sort active threads beside Search, with Configured order and Last message choices.
  • iOS and Android: Settings > Thread behavior > Sort active threads by last message. Both the phone list and tablet sidebar use it.
  • Message order matches the row's last-user-message timestamp, with update and creation fallbacks. It ignores saved arrangement keys without rewriting them. Switching back restores the arrangement.
  • Pinned and parked sections retain their own ordering. Active moves are disabled while message sorting is selected; lifecycle drops into Active remain available without order-key writes. Settle, Un-settle, Pin and Snooze stay available.
  • The Working section retains its existing return-time order while enabled. The saved message-sort choice applies again when it is disabled.
  • Each device persists its own choice through its existing client-preference store. There are no server RPC, capability or shell-payload changes, so local, remote and relay connections use the same existing data.

Related: #16412 and Ideas discussion #6964. The previous opt-in implementation, #15216, is closed and unmerged. This is a fresh implementation on current main.

This uses the focused configuration-option exception in CONTRIBUTING.md: the established capability is ordering active threads, the option selects their display order, and it preserves the product default, saved arrangement and existing section workflows. No maintainer direction approval is claimed.

Verification

487 focused tests pass:

sh
1vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadSort.test.ts apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.logic.test.ts apps/mobile/src/features/threads/threadListV2.test.ts packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts apps/mobile/src/lib/storage.test.ts

Coverage includes the 2m-versus-10h regression, restoration of saved keys, empty and malformed timestamps, deterministic multi-environment ties, preference persistence, Working-section precedence and lifecycle-drop planning without arrangement writes.

Typechecking passes for web, mobile, contracts and client-runtime. Targeted lint reports no errors, with existing warnings in the touched files. Formatting and diff checks pass.

Browser verification used an isolated development server and five synthetic thread fixtures. Configured order placed Review release notes (10h) above Fix recent checkout issue (3m). Last message reversed those rows, kept the pin and settled shelf in place, closed the menu after selection, persisted across reload, and restored the saved arrangement when switched back. Settle remains visible on hover with message sorting enabled. The fixtures are presentation evidence, not coherent event histories for backend lifecycle testing.

Sort menu | 16-second recording

Not exercised: native iOS/Android runtime, desktop packaging, remote/relay sessions, or pointer drag gestures. Mobile ordering and move planning were unit-tested and typechecked; the browser pass exercised the shared web UI.

Model: GPT-6.1-Sol (high reasoning). Harness: Codex in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds an opt-in last-message sorting workflow across web and mobile, including persisted settings and changed active-thread reordering behavior. Existing defaults remain unchanged, but the cross-platform shared-runtime and interaction changes are broad enough to merit human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds device-local last-message sorting for active threads across mobile and web. Sorting uses the latest user-message timestamp, with update and creation timestamps as fallbacks. Active threads cannot be manually reordered in this mode. The Working section retains its return-time ordering.

Changes: Active thread sorting

Layer / File(s)Summary
Sorting logic and setting contract
packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadSort.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadSort.test.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts
Adds active-thread sorting by message recency, with update and creation timestamps as fallbacks. Adds the web setting with a disabled default and tests its decoding and patch behavior.
Mobile sorting preference
apps/mobile/src/persistence/mobile-preferences.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/use-thread-list-v2-shelf-preferences.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsThreadsRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/lib/storage.test.ts
Adds the mobile preference, exposes its loaded value, provides a settings toggle, and verifies preference persistence. The toggle is disabled while the Working section is enabled.
Mobile thread ordering and moves
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/threadListV2.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/threadOrder.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadArrangementSheet.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/home/*, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadNavigationSidebar.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/threadListV2.test.ts
Applies last-message sorting to active lists and disables active-thread reordering in that mode. Lifecycle moves can insert threads into Active without changing saved order keys. The Working section keeps its return-time ordering.
Web sidebar sorting and controls
apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.tsx, apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/sidebar/SidebarThreadHeader.tsx, docs/user/thread-sidebar.md
Adds a sidebar sort menu and uses the selected ordering for active threads and drag behavior. The documentation covers the sorting option, device-specific preferences, and Working-section behavior.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 30599

On servers without reorder capabilities, some users cannot move threads to Active from the arrangement sheet, but can still use the thread-list actions. This is a bounded issue to fix or accept before merging.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 30599

Last-message sorting remains opt-in and does not replace thread permissions or environment-specific controls. Saved arrangements are preserved. No material security risk introduced or worsened by this change was identified.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Influencing message recency can change a thread's displayed position, but the reviewed sorting path does not derive mutation authority or target identity from that position. Mutation targets remain explicitly scoped to an environment and thread.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The sort preference is not an authorization substitute. Mobile checks operation scope before moving a thread and checks each required lifecycle capability. Web checks operation scope for the moved thread and any order-assignment targets before dispatching scoped commands.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The mobile recency branch sets its move-busy guard before awaiting mutations and clears it in finally. Web stops subsequent operations and clears the corresponding optimistic projection on a reported failure or interruption. Neither reviewed sequence compensates earlier successful lifecycle writes; backend atomicity and idempotency remain unverified.

Allow lifecycle moves when reorder capability is absent.

When last-message sorting is enabled, the Active planner accepts a pinned, settled, or snoozed thread without a reorder capability. On a server with no pin or active reorder capability, this disabled check still blocks the drag gesture and accessibility section action. Allow the handle when sectionActions contains a permitted lifecycle move, even if neither reorder capability is available.
