Problem

On Android, a sideways swipe across an inline HTML block can start scrolling the conversation as soon as the finger drifts vertically. It stops following the finger even when the gesture is almost horizontal.

scroll-before-pr

Change

The Android WebView patch waits for the platform touch threshold, then keeps a horizontal gesture with the WebView until the finger lifts. This applies even when the page only overflows horizontally.

The existing nested-scroll setting still controls vertical gestures. Pages with no vertical overflow pass them to the conversation. Taller pages keep them until their scroll edge. Multi-touch and zero-range iframe handling remain in place.

Scope and approval

This is a focused fix for an obvious scrolling bug in existing inline HTML blocks, submitted without a prior issue under the small bug-fix exception. It follows the vertical-scroll work in #17211, which closed #16989. Those addressed vertical trapping; this PR addresses horizontal swipes interrupted by slight vertical drift.

The gesture change is Android-only. The inline HTML overflow detector and vertical-scroll setting are unchanged. Full-screen HTML continues to receive its vertical gestures without a scrolling parent. Web, desktop, providers, and wire contracts need no changes. The lockfile changes are the regenerated WebView patch hash and dependent peer hashes.

Verification

The Samsung Galaxy S23 recordings below show manual testing of the before and after builds on a physical device. The emulator checks below used a rebuilt Android development client with the updated native patch.

  • Verified straight and slightly diagonal vertical swipes in both directions over the horizontal table still scroll the conversation. The diagonal swipes move 500 physical pixels vertically and 35 sideways, about 4 degrees off vertical.
  • Made the test page taller and verified slightly diagonal vertical scrolling stays inside it until its bottom edge, then passes to the conversation.
  • Passed mobile typecheck, focused lint and formatting, and git diff --check.

The native build used a local generated CMake cache correction to link the bundled Android Oniguruma library. No build-system changes are included. iOS and live MCP iframe/pinch interactions were not exercised.

Horizontal scrolling

The emulator video shows identical scripted swipes before and after, at their original speed. Both recordings include Android's native touch pointer and trail. Before, the conversation moves and the two swipes reach March through May. After, the conversation stays still and the same swipes reach June through August.

Walkthrough

The Android WebView patch changes how touch gestures are classified and when the parent can intercept them. The inline HTML component comment describes the updated horizontal and vertical drag behavior.

Changes: Android WebView gesture handling

Layer / File(s)Summary
Gesture interception and documentation
patches/react-native-webview@14.0.1.patch, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/HtmlRenderWebView.tsx
The patch obtains the platform touch-slop threshold, tracks gesture state, and evaluates parent interception for every touch event. It preserves multi-touch and horizontal gestures, and yields vertical gestures based on nested scrolling and the WebView’s scroll edge. The component comment describes the updated behavior.

No new privileged access or content interface was identified. The change is limited to Android gesture handling, but cancellation and subsequent parent handoff were not verified against platform behavior.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The behavioral scope is broader than inline HTML blocks because interception now runs regardless of nested-scrolling status. The changed mechanism governs touch ownership within Android WebViews; no added credential, service, data-store, or native bridge authority appears in the compared changes.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing page-reported overflow messages are parsed for the expected type and boolean fields before changing scrolling configuration. Existing navigation and external-window handling remain unchanged. The gesture patch consumes motion geometry and scroll state rather than adding message-based native capabilities.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep horizontal gesture ownership until release.

If a horizontal swipe later accumulates more vertical than horizontal displacement, Line 44 changes its classification. On a page that yields vertical drags, the parent can then intercept and cancel the WebView’s touch stream before the swipe ends. Latch horizontal intent after the touch threshold, and clear it on ACTION_UP or ACTION_CANCEL. Android sends subsequent events to the parent after interception. (developer.android.com)

COMMENT FROM gpt-6-astra

The handoff described here is possible, but retaining horizontal ownership after the drag becomes predominantly vertical is outside this fix's intended behavior.

This PR makes the existing direction check from #17211 run for horizontal-only pages as well. While cumulative horizontal displacement exceeds vertical displacement, the WebView keeps the gesture. If vertical displacement catches up, the existing vertical handoff rules apply. We are deliberately preserving that direction-based policy rather than locking the gesture until release.

The reproduced bug occurs during shallow diagonal horizontal swipes, with 700 pixels of horizontal movement and 48 pixels of vertical movement. The current patch keeps those swipes in the WebView. Native emulator verification also covered vertical swipes over horizontal-only blocks, internal vertical scrolling in blocks overflowing in both directions, and handoff at both vertical edges.

Adding a touch threshold and a horizontal latch would change the policy for direction-changing drags and restore the extra state removed from the smaller fix. Resolving this as a proposed behavior change, not a failure of the scoped fix.

@none23 Thanks for clarifying the intended policy. I withdraw this finding.

The supplied code keeps the gesture while cumulative horizontal displacement exceeds vertical displacement. If vertical displacement catches up, the existing vertical handoff rules apply. A touch threshold and horizontal latch would introduce a separate behavior change. They are not required for this scoped fix.

Horizontal ownership is not latched until release. If vertical displacement catches up, the existing vertical handoff rules apply. Extending this direction check to horizontal-only HTML blocks should preserve that policy; a touch threshold and horizontal latch are separate behavior changes.

COMMENT FROM gpt-6-astra

Manual testing favored the previous gesture-lock behavior, which is restored in d3999d2e81. Once horizontal intent passes the touch threshold, the WebView keeps the gesture until release. The direction-based policy described in my earlier reply no longer applies to the current head.

@none23 Thanks for clarifying the updated policy. The supplied code matches your description: after horizontal movement exceeds touchSlop and vertical displacement, horizontalGesture keeps the gesture in the WebView until release. The next ACTION_DOWN resets that state.

The earlier learning about direction-based handoff no longer describes the current policy.

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, the Android gesture policy in patches/react-native-webview@14.0.1.patch retains horizontal gesture ownership until release once horizontal intent exceeds the platform touch threshold. Manual testing favored this gesture-lock policy. This supersedes the earlier guidance to reclassify gestures continuously from cumulative horizontal and vertical displacement.

@none23 thanks for isolating the missing interception for horizontal-only HTML blocks and retaining horizontal ownership after the platform touch threshold. i kept your implementation and commits intact, then merged current main (f0dd86f16482) without rebasing or force-pushing. the new head is 7619c4d053ad5e8cd7e11768ff2ea6c54308c054.

two independent source reviews found no code issues across the WebView callers. i found no simplification that justified changing the gesture policy or rewriting your code. the patch, HTML component, and propagated lockfile hashes remain unchanged from your previous head.

verification passed on a Blacksmith worker: vp run check:changed (patch validation, format, lint, knip, and typecheck), plus all 11 tests in packages/shared/src/htmlRender.test.ts. all 27 reported CI checks are now successful, with none pending or failing. no new test files were added; there is no existing native gesture test file for this patch.

native interaction review remains unverified this run. device access is disabled and adb has no attached device. desktop Chrome cannot exercise Android's Java interception path, so i captured no substitute browser evidence. your existing device recordings remain in the PR body, but i cannot claim they verify this run. before merging, a rebuilt Android client still needs diagonal horizontal swipes followed by vertical feed scrolling, both vertical document edges, pinch, and MCP iframe scrolling checked. the gesture-lock policy also still needs maintainer approval. web, desktop, iOS, providers, and wire contracts have no behavior changes in this diff.

Verified in a real dev environment

no changed runtime behavior could be verified on this linux boat vm. i inspected the current diff, description, discussion, commit authors, and check status at head 7619c4d053ad5e8cd7e11768ff2ea6c54308c054. the pr is open and its pr commits have no authorship by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. cafe reports 27 successful checks, zero pending and zero failing; that is existing ci status, not runtime proof.

the changed execution path is android's native RNCWebView.onTouchEvent: a user opens an inline html block in a mobile thread and swipes sideways with vertical drift. the patch retains horizontal ownership after the platform touch threshold. the other source change is a comment; lockfile changes propagate the patch hash.

Not verified

the original bug on github/main, the changed behavior on the pr head, and neighboring vertical feed handoff, vertical document edge handoff, pinch, and iframe scrolling remain unverified. there is no usable android device here. the repository's mobile verification skill explicitly requires stopping verification when device tools or devices are unavailable. no worktree install, dev server, provider turn, substitute chrome recording, or screenshot was produced: chrome and web provider turns cannot execute this android java interception path. existing contributor recordings were not treated as verification from this run.

verification needs a rebuilt native android client for both revisions, real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns producing matching wide html blocks, and native swipe checks with before/after captures. ios was also not exercised. no source edits, pushes, labels, or pr state changes were made.
