Problem

classifyRelayClientOutput sends every cloudflared INF line to debug except Registered tunnel connection. cloudflared logs Unregistered tunnel connection at INF when a connection shuts down, so at the default Info level that line never reaches any log, boot-service.log included. After a Connect flap the logs show the re-registration and nothing about the connection that went away. #16331 point 3 describes this.

Change

The classifier now returns "unregistered" for an INF line containing Unregistered tunnel connection, and the output observer logs it at info as Relay client tunnel connection unregistered. It uses the same attributes as the other branches, so the connector token is still replaced with <redacted> in output.

Unregistration is not treated as registration. It does not resolve the registration deferred, does not signal tunnelConnected, and does not reset the rejected-registration counter. The warning-token check runs first, so this cannot lower an ERR/WRN/FTL/PNC line to info. Every other INF line stays at debug, Starting metrics server and Initiating graceful shutdown included.

Scope and approval

Refs #16331. The triage comment, posted by Grok on behalf of @juliusmarminge, lists "Narrowly raising registration/unregistration INF lines in classifyRelayClientOutput to Info" as one fix option and expects a narrow match on registration lifecycle lines. Registration already logs at info, so this PR adds only the unregistration half. It does not touch the issue's other gap, persisting connector output to disk, so the issue should stay open.

Verification

  • New classifier fixtures: the unregister line returns "unregistered". The routine INF lines and a DBG line with the same text stay "debug". The existing registration, metrics-server and warning fixtures are unchanged and pass.
  • New runtime test: it feeds the real CloudManagedEndpointRuntime a synthetic connector stream with a routine INF line, an unregister line carrying the connector token, and a registration line, with the minimum log level at Info. The unregister event logs at Info before the registration, the token appears only as <redacted>, and the routine line is not logged.
  • After merging main 05696c636e, both new tests fail with the production fix reverted (expected 'debug' to be 'unregistered', and the unregister log missing) and pass with the fix restored. ManagedEndpointRuntime.test.ts: 18 passed. Main's deleted pre-existing smoke tests remain deleted.
  • I checked the message against cloudflared's source: connection/control.go logs Unregistered tunnel connection with Info() and connIndex/ip fields. The cloudflared 2026.8.2 binary contains the same string.
  • vp lint and vp fmt --check on both files: clean.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit in apps/server: passes (0 errors).

I did not run a live cloudflared tunnel through a flap. That would need a real Connect tunnel and connector token.

Explanation

The title "fix(server): retain relay unregister events at normal log level" matches the main change. The PR makes cloudflared "Unregistered tunnel connection" INF lines log at info instead of debug, so the title is specific and follows conventional commit style. It is concise, has no file list or vague terms, and a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section explains the missing unregistration log at the default Info level and cites issue #16331. The Change section explains the classifier and observer changes and that unregistration does not affect registration state. The Scope section links the triage comment, explains why this is a narrow fix, and states the issue should stay open. The Verification section lists the fixtures, the runtime test with a revert check, lint, format, and type checks, and notes that a live cloudflared tunnel flap was not tested. The template's optional agent attribution line is present. The description is complete and specific.

Make the test prove that unregistration does not complete registration.

The fixture sends unregistration and registration in one queue batch, then waits on tunnelConnected. The later registration line can satisfy that wait. The test never checks connector.registered.

A future unregistered branch that logs and resolves connector.registered can therefore pass this test. That deferred controls the registration-timeout recovery path. Feed unregistration in a synchronized batch and assert that the timeout still requests recovery, then feed registration and retain the existing log and connection-signal assertions.

thanks @only21mil. the narrow classifier branch preserves warning handling, token redaction and registration signaling. i kept your commits and implementation, merged current main to resolve the classifier conflict, kept main's shorter comment, and added cases proving ERR/WRN/FTL/PNC unregistration messages remain warnings. the final diff is two files; no UI changes.

verification:

  • reproduced the bug against current main: the existing unregistration classifier test fails with expected 'debug' to be 'unregistered'.
  • all 18 ManagedEndpointRuntime.test.ts tests pass, including the info-level logging, redaction and registration-timeout regression.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed passes format, lint, both knip checks, graphql, affected typechecks and focused tests.
  • a local real-runtime subprocess check with synthetic connector output passes info-level unregistration, warning output, token redaction, routine-line filtering, registration signaling and shutdown.
  • two independent read-only reviews approve head 6e037808389b02b77fcf5190db2f71ff0c579bc5 without findings.

runtime transcript:

text
1Info Relay client tunnel connection unregistered
2 output: ... INF Unregistered tunnel connection token=<redacted>
3Warn Relay client reported a transport warning
4 output: ... WRN transport warning token=<redacted>
5Info Relay client tunnel connection registered
6runtime subprocess path: info lifecycle, warning, redaction, debug filtering, registration and stop passed

unverified: a live cloudflare tunnel through a real flap, which requires a real Connect tunnel and connector token. connector output persistence remains outside this fix, as in the original scope.

review disposition: retaining the existing token-redacted connector diagnostic fields in response to the minor raw-output finding. observeConnectorOutput redacts connectorToken before constructing shared attributes; registration already logs those attributes at info and warnings log them at warning. this branch deliberately promotes only the specific INF unregistration event and uses that same mechanism. the finding gives no additional secret emitted by cloudflared's unregistration event. changing the runtime's diagnostic field policy is outside this narrow logging fix. known limit: the shared sanitizer redacts the connector token, not arbitrary unrelated strings supplied by a connector.

all 28 checks passed on 6e037808389b02b77fcf5190db2f71ff0c579bc5.

  • confirmed this pr is open at 6e037808389b02b77fcf5190db2f71ff0c579bc5; none of its six commits are authored by @juliusmarminge or @t3dotgg.
  • created ../main from freshly fetched github/main (570d4b03ee), ran vp i, and started its real dev server in the background. checked out the exact pr head, ran vp i, and started its real dev server with isolated .t3 state.
  • used repository playwright 1.60.0 and /usr/bin/google-chrome to pair with both real clients and navigate to connections settings. enabled the documented public connect configuration from .env.example.
  • main's real t3 connect status reports authorization missing and relay not provisioned. on the pr, t3 connect link --headless successfully downloaded, verified, installed and activated real cloudflared 2026.10.0, then waited for account approval. the browser reached the real account sign-in form. no authorized connect account is available on this vm. cancelled the pending authorization.
  • no source changes or pushes. existing head ci reports 28 successful checks; these do not prove the changed behavior.

command transcript

real connect authorization requires an account sign-in

Not verified

the original missing unregistration log was not reproduced on main, and the pr's info-level unregistration log was not exercised. a real provisioned connect tunnel is required. without authorization there is no cloudflared connection to flap, so reconnection, warning handling, routine-log filtering and connector-token redaction also remain unverified through the live path.

no new project or codex provider turn was created: a provider turn cannot provision the missing connect tunnel. no synthetic connector was substituted. native ios/android, desktop shells, macos/windows and remote-device tunnel access were not exercised. no interaction recording is offered as proof of the changed behavior because it could not be reached.

result: unverifiable. rerun with an authorized connect account and provisioned tunnel, reproduce a real flap on main, then repeat on this exact head and inspect the info-level server logs.
