Problem

preview_snapshot fails after 10 seconds on a desktop tab the Browser panel isn't showing. Over a week of nightlies, 93 of 252 snapshots from one user failed this way, across 12 threads. Successful ones took 0.1 to 0.7 s. A preview_evaluate on the same tab right after a failure returned in 4 ms.

The snapshot always took a screenshot, even when the agent set neither includeImage nor save. That's the default, and nothing reads the image then. A hidden tab draws no frames, so Page.captureScreenshot never answers and the snapshot fails, though its text was ready in 50 ms.

preview_snapshot on a hidden tab: before, the text is ready in 50 ms but the snapshot waits on the screenshot and fails at 10,008 ms; after, the screenshot isn't requested and the snapshot returns in 50 ms

Change

  • Tool: preview_snapshot asks the host for a screenshot only when includeImage or save is set.
  • Server browser: without one, the snapshot skips Page.captureScreenshot and the screencast pause around it.
  • Contract: PreviewAutomationSnapshot.screenshot is optional. Only the server browser builds snapshots and only this tool reads them, so no client changes.

Snapshots with includeImage or save on a hidden tab still fail. Making those tabs draw is #18873. The two changes touch different parts of the capture code.

Scope and approval

Refs #16567. The maintainer triage confirms the failure: an offscreen desktop guest never answers Page.captureScreenshot, and the triage notes a snapshot captures even when includeImage is false. This fixes that for the default, image-free call only. Host eviction after timeouts (#16921) and the broker printing its own 15000 ms budget instead of the host's 10 s message are separate and not changed here.

Verification

  • A new test drives real headless Chromium through a CDP session whose Page.captureScreenshot never answers. The tree and refs come back, and no capture is requested. On main it fails after 10,045 ms with "The page was too busy to capture a snapshot in time."
  • MCP tests check that only includeImage or save calls ask the host for a screenshot, and that a reply without one returns the text alone.
  • In headless Chromium with begin-frame control, so no frames are drawn, requestAnimationFrame never fires and a bare Page.captureScreenshot stays pending. A text-only snapshot returns in 50 ms. The default one fails at 10,008 ms.
  • vp test run on ServerBrowserPage.test.ts, McpHttpServer.test.ts and ServerBrowser.test.ts: 90 passed. Server and contracts typecheck, scoped lint and format pass.
  • Not run in the packaged desktop app. The hidden-tab behavior in Electron comes from the fixtures in #16567.

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes the default preview_snapshot behavior: screenshots are no longer captured or returned unless explicitly requested via includeImage or save. The change is focused and tested, but the product-default change warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Preview snapshot requests disable screenshot capture unless includeImage or save is true. Snapshots and MCP responses can omit screenshot data when capture is disabled or unavailable.

Changes: Preview snapshot screenshot handling

Layer / File(s)Summary
Optional screenshot capture
packages/contracts/src/previewAutomation.ts, apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowserPage.ts, apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts, apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowserPage.test.ts
The snapshot contract allows screenshot data to be absent. The browser skips screenshot capture when requested. The test verifies that the page remains readable without invoking screenshot capture.
MCP screenshot selection and response

The preview handler disables screenshots unless includeImage or save is true. The HTTP response includes screenshot metadata and image content only when screenshot data exists. Tests verify host inputs and response fields for image-enabled and text-only calls.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b7f5e

Text-only snapshots can return without waiting for a screenshot. No merge-blocking issue was identified; normal checks remain appropriate.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b7f5e

Text-only snapshots avoid unnecessary image capture without changing the inspected access checks. However, they also bypass existing capture serialization, allowing concurrent readers of the same tab to interrupt one another’s snapshots.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Text-only snapshots bypass the per-tab capture lock previously used by every snapshot. Observer requests can consequently overlap another session’s capture on the same tab and invalidate its reference generation, causing that capture to fail. This weakens failure containment between readers sharing a tab. Generation validation still fails closed, so the evidence does not establish stale-reference execution or privilege escalation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified contention requires overlapping requests against the same page’s reference state. A caller already permitted to read that tab can interfere with another in-flight snapshot; the evidence establishes a shared-tab availability effect, not new access to other threads or greater browser-control authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Saving still requires save=true and available PNG bytes. The existing writer generates the filename beneath the configured browser-artifacts directory using a sanitized hostname, time, and random suffix; the request does not supply a destination path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Concurrent generation invalidation fails closed: the earlier capture rejects instead of returning a superseded reference set, and its retry is suppressed after another snapshot starts. This contains the identified race to failed snapshot work rather than establishing an unsafe action path.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the save-only result description.

When save=true and includeImage is false, McpHttpServer.ts returns only url and screenshotPath. It does not return screenshot dimensions. Change “when includeImage or save is set” to describe the image-inclusive result only.

✅ Addressed in commit 46705eb

Note

Written by claude-opus-5-5 on behalf of Byntham

Fixed in 46705ebb42. The description now names screenshot dimensions only with includeImage. Its later sentence already says save alone returns just the url and screenshotPath.

@Byntham Thanks for the fix. The updated description limits screenshot dimensions to includeImage and keeps the save-only result as url and screenshotPath.
