office files open from attachment chips, workspace files, and agent saved-path links in the files viewer. word now uses betteroffice worker layout with paper-sized pages, fit-to-width, page counts, and selectable text. excel uses a virtualized canvas with styles, number formats, merged ranges, widths, frozen panes, sheet tabs, keyboard selection, and formatted copy. powerpoint uses opencode's font and text handling, scrollable slides, speaker notes, and previous/next navigation. review fixes preserve final-slide navigation, bounded image accounting and tile size, cross-tile sheet text, header selections, sheet-switch cancellation, linked destination cells, theme fonts, and worksheet metadata/namespaces. shared docx metadata is counted once, so a complete document no longer shows the old limited-preview notice; genuine truncation notices remain. worksheet relationship paths, shared-string relationship targets, paired metadata, CDATA text budgets, alternate attribute serialization, and empty sheets are covered too. existing font and mermaid previews remain part of this layer.

the opencode helpers are adapted to react with their mit notice. @betteroffice/docx and @betteroffice/xlsx replace docx-preview and read-excel-file; all three betteroffice engine packages have apache-2.0 notices. parsing, layout, and painting stay in isolated workers, with lazy renderer chunks, bounded reads/archives/expanded markup/cells, and exact-file grants preserved. the optional cjk font addon remains excluded, matching opencode. betteroffice 0.3.0 currently clips a merged cell across a frozen-column boundary; the wide-title screenshots show that engine limitation. mobile keeps its native handoff; desktop shell and relay/tunnel runtime checks are unverified.

blacksmith passed ci's frozen install, full check/lint, knip, all workspace typechecks, 90 existing viewer/unit cases, and the production web build. the archive limit now runs before jszip and counts directories, including archives with a falsified entry count. the real app reproduces stale docx content before the refresh fix; after it, overwriting an open docx or xlsx and pressing explorer refresh reloads the viewer without a provider turn. the uploaded recording was played and seeked through its final updated frame. same-worker production main js before/after the refresh fix: 1,102.59 kb raw in both, 360.63 / 360.64 kb gzip. heavy renderers and archive checks remain in lazy worker chunks.

Built by gpt-6.1-sol in Codex, orchestrated from T3 Code.

For .constructor, this lookup returns the inherited Object constructor instead of null, so finalizeAbsoluteMediaFileAsset accepts example.constructor as a supported preview file. The direct index access checks the prototype chain; guard the lookup with an own-property check.

Walkthrough

This change adds Office, font, and Mermaid previews, expands supported image and audio formats, and updates shared classification and server asset handling. Attachment and workspace views route supported files to preview components. Markdown recognition and composer attachment classification also change.

Changes: File preview support

Layer / File(s)Summary
Recognize previewable file formats
packages/shared/src/filePreview.ts, packages/shared/src/filePreview.test.ts, apps/server/src/assets/AssetAccess.ts, apps/server/src/assets/AssetAccess.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/files/filePreviewMode.ts, apps/web/src/components/files/FilePreviewPanel.test.ts, apps/desktop/src/ipc/methods/window.test.ts
Shared classification and MIME lookup recognize Office documents, fonts, Mermaid files, WebA audio, RTF, and additional image formats. Server asset handling accepts applicable formats. Markdown recognition includes .markdown, .mdown, and .mkd. Tests cover supported and unsupported paths.
Classify workspace images in chat attachments
apps/web/src/components/chat/composerAttachmentFiles.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/composerAttachmentFiles.test.ts
Workspace-previewable images with unsupported image MIME types are classified as files. Tests cover image classification and clipboard-paste behavior.
Define and process Office preview requests
apps/web/src/components/files/officePreviewProtocol.ts, apps/web/src/components/files/officePreview.worker.ts, apps/web/package.json, apps/web/vite.config.ts, third-party-licenses.config.json
The worker protocol defines Office open and slide requests and results. The worker validates archives, parses workbook data, and processes presentation slides. Dependencies, worker configuration, and license notices support this processing.
Load and render Office previews
apps/web/src/components/files/OfficeViewer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/files/OfficeFilePreview.tsx, apps/web/src/components/files/FilePreviewPanel.tsx
The Office viewer fetches files and sends requests to the worker. It renders Word content, workbook cells, and presentation slides, with loading, error, and navigation states. Workspace preview routing passes file URLs and metadata.
Route Mermaid and font previews
apps/web/src/components/files/AttachmentFilePreview.tsx, apps/web/src/components/files/FilePreviewPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/components/files/MermaidFilePreview.tsx, apps/web/src/components/files/MermaidViewer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/files/FontFilePreview.tsx, apps/web/src/components/files/FontViewer.tsx
Attachment and workspace views route Mermaid and font files to preview components. Mermaid rendering uses a persisted preference and source checks. Font previews validate and display font specimens.

Merge Risk: External image Low Β· up to 69323

An Office preview can briefly show stale content when its file metadata changes. Reset viewer state and address the UI-guidance violations; the remaining risk is bounded.

Security architecture risk: External image Moderate Β· up to 69323

New previews process potentially untrusted documents. Script and network isolation is explicit, but some rendering can continue outside the intended time and memory limits. Opening a crafted document could therefore stall or exhaust the application.

Retained concerns

  • Medium Β· security Β· inferred: DOCX processing leaves the worker after archive validation and performs ZIP processing, document rendering, DOM construction and sanitization on the application main thread. Neither renderWord nor its renderer receives a cancellation signal or document-complexity budget. Timeout and teardown abort fetches and terminate the worker, but cannot preempt this rendering; the abort check only prevents its eventual state commit. A crafted newly previewable DOCX can therefore consume application resources beyond the intended preview lifetime. Archive byte limits and the final sandbox constrain other risks but do not establish a responsive, disposable rendering boundary.
  • Medium Β· security Β· inferred: PPTX archive and destination-canvas limits do not bound decoded embedded-image memory. The worker returns referenced image bytes without raster-dimension or aggregate decoded-pixel limits; SlideCanvas decodes every image and retains successful bitmaps until the operation finishes. Cancellation prevents painting but does not stop subsequent image decodes. A presentation containing multiple highly compressed, large-dimension rasters can therefore exceed the intended resource envelope when opened. Bitmaps are closed after completion and the canvas is bounded, but neither control limits peak decoding allocations; browser-specific limits remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred β€” The supported attack prerequisite is control of a file that a user opens in a preview, including a local attachment or an accessible environment asset. The retained concerns affect the viewing application's responsiveness and memory. The inspected paths do not establish additional server privileges, cross-tenant access or credential disclosure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred β€” The material attack paths are resource exhaustion through DOCX rendering that cannot be preempted by the preview timeout, and excessive aggregate PPTX bitmap allocation despite small encoded images. These are source-supported availability concerns; no exploit execution or browser-specific impact was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed β€” DOCX external relationships are removed before rendering; fonts and alternative HTML chunks are disabled; generated markup is sanitized and displayed in an empty-sandbox iframe with restrictive CSP. Inspected renderer image paths load archive entries and convert them to data URLs. Font previews also use an empty-sandbox iframe and data-only font CSP. Standalone Mermaid input receives a resource/configuration filter before the existing strict, sanitized renderer. These are substantial active-content controls, not proof that all dependency behavior is safe.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed β€” Normal source replacement remounts OfficeViewer by URL. Abort checks suppress stale results, teardown terminates workers and removes registered presentation fonts, and decoded slide bitmaps are closed after completion. Archive entry, expanded-byte and XML-size limits constrain parser input. These lifecycle controls prevent several stale-state and resource-retention paths, but do not close the main-thread cancellation and peak decoded-memory gaps.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed β€” Consider an independently disposable lifecycle for expensive document rendering, explicit DOCX node/page complexity limits, and PPTX per-image dimensions plus aggregate decoded-pixel limits. Cancellation should stop further decoding work, not merely suppress its final output.

Use the shared Select primitive for the sheet picker.

apps/web/src/components/ui/select.tsx provides the shared select control. The raw <select> is styled as a form control, which violates the Web UI requirement to use the primitive when one provides that control. Preserve the numeric page index by converting the primitive's string value in onValueChange.

Move the dynamic import() out of SlideCanvas to fix the React Compiler bailout.

CI "Test Web" fails at this line. The React Compiler reports (BuildHIR::lowerExpression) Handle Import and skips SlideCanvas. reactCompilerCoverage.test.ts then fails because it requires zero bailouts. The Web UI rules state: "Every file under apps/web/src must compile." renderWord already uses import() without problems because it is a module-level function. Load the paint engine through a module-level helper in the same way.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟑 Minor | ⚑ Quick win

Use a Map for the Office MIME lookup in hostPreviewMimeTypeFromExtension.

OFFICE_MIME_TYPES is a plain object literal, so the lookup also reads inherited Object.prototype keys. The extension regex accepts .constructor. For that extension, OFFICE_MIME_TYPES["constructor"] returns the Object function, not null. The function's type says it returns string | null, but here it returns a function. In AssetAccess.ts, the media-file-exact branch then passes the if (!mimeType) check and returns that function as the asset mimeType. The other extension tables in this file use Map, so this lookup does not match them.

Already fixed: filePreview.ts:215 guards the lookup with Object.hasOwn, so inherited names cannot become MIME types. The existing .constructor and .proto regressions pass in the 101-test shared preview suite; a Map rewrite is unnecessary.

@maria-rcks Thanks for the fix. The supplied code confirms that Object.hasOwn guards the Office MIME lookup. This prevents inherited properties from becoming MIME types. A Map rewrite is unnecessary.

Replace the static inline styles with Tailwind classes.

padding: OFFICE_PAGE_PADDING is a static 20 px value, so use p-5. The theme-dependent background does not need resolvedTheme either. Use bg-[#f4f4f5] dark:bg-[#141414] and remove useTheme from SlideCanvas.

Use the shared Select primitive instead of a raw styled <select>.

This <select> uses border, radius, background, and padding classes to look like a form control. The Web UI rules forbid this pattern when a primitive provides that control. Replace it with the components/ui select component and choose a size/variant. Keep only layout classes such as min-w-0 flex-1 on the wrapper.

As per path instructions and coding guidelines: "Don't style a raw <button>, <input>, <select>, or <textarea> to look like a control a primitive provides."

Issue file-specific claims for office previews.

When a client opens an in-workspace DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX, finalizeWorkspaceFileAsset issues a directory-scoped workspace-file claim. The asset route accepts a different filename, and resolveAsset now allows the new office extensions under the same directory. A client can therefore use the signed URL for one office file to fetch another previewable office file.

Fixed in aeb2930f28: DOCX/XLSX/PPTX now use workspace-file-exact claims, including draft resources. The existing AssetAccess test exercises both issuance paths for each format and rejects sibling filenames and traversal; all 48 AssetAccess tests pass.

@maria-rcks Thanks for the fix. The supplied code confirms that Office previews use workspace-file-exact claims for workspace and relative draft resources. The resolver rejects sibling filenames and traversal paths.

Use p-5 for the static padding, but retain the runtime background style.

OFFICE_PAGE_PADDING is fixed at 20 px, which p-5 covers. OFFICE_PAGE_BACKGROUND[resolvedTheme] is computed from useTheme() at runtime, so the Web UI rule permits that inline value.

Reset viewer state when kind or sizeBytes changes without a src change.

OfficeFilePreview keys OfficeViewer by props.src, so a source change remounts the viewer. However, changes to props.kind or props.sizeBytes rerun the effect on the same instance without clearing its state. The old word, workbook, or page can then remain visible or mismatch the new file.

Fixed in aeb2930f28: OfficeFilePreview now keys the viewer by src, kind, and sizeBytes, resetting all state and cleaning up the prior worker when metadata changes. The browser regression fails with the old key and passes with this fix, proving the prior size error clears while replacement bytes are still loading.

@maria-rcks Thanks for the fix in aeb2930f28. Including src, kind, and sizeBytes in the key addresses this finding: metadata changes remount OfficeViewer, reset its state, and run the prior worker’s cleanup.

Valid Mermaid bidirectional arrows such as A <--> B are rejected, so opening a safe .mmd file displays the warning instead of previewing the diagram. The bare < alternative matches the arrow token; restrict this check to markup prefixes so supported arrow syntax remains renderable.

Fixed in 3e57a41aec. The guard now matches markup prefixes instead of every less-than sign. The real file preview renders solid, thick, and dotted bidirectional arrows, and the existing browser suite covers those plus the one-way arrow.

Fixed in 69d065fd51. Style inheritance is now resolved iteratively with hard caps on chain depth and total styles visited, checked before allocating, so a 3,000-style basedOn chain stays bounded (longest main-thread task 87 ms) and renders its body with the preview-limited warning. Latent styles no longer count, so the default python-docx, Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs templates render with their styles and no warning.

3A `<col>` range entirely beyond column 50 is rewritten onto column 50, incorrectly applying its metadata to retained column AX and potentially changing retained cells' widths or styles. The code clamps `min` and `max` independently; intersect each range with columns 1–50 and drop it when that intersection is empty.

A valid worksheet with prefixed elements is rejected during preview: cellParser.write(raw).close() throws because the reconstructed raw contains prefixed children such as <x:v> without the worksheet’s xmlns:x binding. The rebuilt row also keeps its prefixed opening tag but emits an unprefixed closing tag; preserve the source namespace and prefixes consistently when reconstructing cells and rows.

Clicking a row or column header can open a hyperlink in the clamped cell instead of only selecting the header. hit() clamps header coordinates to cell zero, and pointerUp follows that cell's link without checking whether the gesture began in a header; exclude header-origin gestures from link activation.

When a row without r starts with a cell whose explicit coordinate skips rows, reconstruction drops the original row metadata, such as its height or visibility. rowTags is keyed before row changes to position.line, so the lookup uses a different key; move the saved tag to the new row number when updating row.
