Forking a response currently creates a thread in the inherited checkout immediately, so users cannot choose to explore the conversation in a separate worktree.

Add a destination chooser to the existing response fork action on web/desktop and mobile. A project-checkout thread offers the current checkout or a new worktree; a worktree thread offers this worktree or a new worktree. Non-Git folders retain the same-folder option. Cancelling creates nothing.

The fork uses the existing conversation transfer and thread launch services. New worktrees start at the selected response's ready checkpoint when available, settle the fork request only after checkout preparation (including concurrent replays), and never start a provider turn. A ready-checkout receipt prevents incomplete or failed preparation from replaying as success. Concurrent in-flight retries must match the original launch request before sharing its result; conflicting command reuse is rejected, including changed projects, target threads, fork sources, or destinations. Without a ready checkpoint, the caller-selected base is preserved. Latest-stable forks pin their history and checkout to the same source run. Re-forking an inherited response preserves its original history boundary while using the displayed thread's selected checkout. The MCP fork tool calls the shared fork service, validates existing destinations against the source project's Git worktrees, and preserves domain failure details. Launch responses retain the existing bounded history policy.

Forks honor the existing setup wait preference. With async: false, fork readiness and the fork result wait for setup completion. With async: true, the script intentionally continues in the background, following the normal thread-launch policy. Requiring every asynchronous script to finish would override that preference. The MCP tool description now states this distinction. The existing web send gate and mobile send gate also monitor setup progress before the agent handoff.

Web and mobile open a new-worktree fork as soon as its thread exists instead of waiting for that request, so the fork shows the usual worktree setup card (fetch, checkout, setup script) while it prepares and holds sends until the checkout exists. A clean finish retires the card at once, since a fork has no agent handoff to wait for. Failed scripts, failed setup, and cancellations remain inspectable. The server names a new-worktree fork's temporary branch when it creates the thread; otherwise the open, still-unbound fork let the web branch toolbar pick a base checkout and overwrite the worktree binding.

Failed synchronous setup retains a checkout that was already bound, preserving setup output for inspection. Replaying that runless fork returns an explicit failure; a new fork is required to retry preparation. The existing web/desktop Delete thread flow offers to remove an orphaned worktree, subject to the normal source-control permission and cleanup settings. This uses the established thread deletion and worktree cleanup path.

This is a focused configuration option for the established response-fork and worktree capabilities under CONTRIBUTING.md. It controls the fork's destination at the existing entry point and reuses the existing worktree setup path. Older remote servers retain the legacy fork path for the same checkout; a changed destination requires the advertised server capability and fails before mutation when unsupported. The provider adapters and conversation transfer behavior are unchanged.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/web/src/components/ChatView.logic.test.ts apps/mobile/src/features/threads/worktree-setup-state.test.ts — 133 tests passed. The new regression failed before the visibility fix and covers streamed/recorded successful fork completion without a provider turn, while retaining failed scripts, failures, and cancellations. Existing normal-launch handoff tests still pass. Client-runtime typecheck and targeted lint/formatting passed (existing lint warnings only).
  • vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts — 65 tests passed. A new regression holds checkout open and verifies the fork already carries the branch it is created on; it failed before the server fix. ChatView.logic.test.ts and the mobile setup-state tests still pass; web, mobile, client-runtime, and server typechecks passed.
  • Real web client, isolated .t3 state, synthetic Fork demo repository with a 4-second blocking setup script: forking into a new worktree opens the fork while it prepares, shows setup progress and script output, then clears the card when the worktree is ready and stays bound to it. Current-checkout and current-worktree forks show no setup card.
  • vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/core.test.ts — 80 tests passed. Nine regressions reproduce conflicting command reuse during checkout and verify that rejection leaves the original fork and checkout intact. An equivalent request with cloned nested values still shares the original preparation. Deferred-based setup regressions verify that blocking setup withholds the fork-ready receipt and launch result until completion, while asynchronous setup permits accepted replay without creating another worktree or setup process. MCP registration cases preserve public dispatch and command rejection reasons, reject malformed wrapped causes, keep internal failures private, and map the typed workspace validation error to invalid_request. New regressions cover a pending accepted replay after the original caller disconnects, failed synchronous setup after workspace binding, unavailable checkpoints, an advancing latest-stable source, and rejection of unregistered MCP destinations before creating a thread.
  • vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadForkService.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadFork.execution.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadWorkflows.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/operations/commands.test.ts packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.test.ts — 140 tests passed. Covers destination binding, checkpoint selection, replay without duplicate worktrees, failed provisioning, async setup, and existing fork behavior.
  • vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadTransportPerformance.test.ts — 52 tests passed after bounding fork launch responses; the final launch-service run also passed after removing the unused start-agent setup stage.
  • MCP core registration and workflow tests passed. vp test run apps/server/src/mcp/OrchestratorMcpToolkit.integration.test.ts — both integration tests passed when run alone. An earlier concurrent run hit the existing 60-second integration timeout.
  • TMPDIR=/private/tmp vp test run packages/contracts/src/environment.test.ts apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/operations/commands.test.ts — 48 tests passed, including advertised capability, legacy history preservation, and rejection before mutation on older servers. The first run hit an existing macOS /var versus /private/var temporary-path assertion; rerunning with the canonical temporary directory passed.
  • Scoped typechecks passed for t3, @t3tools/web, @t3tools/mobile, @t3tools/client-runtime, and @t3tools/contracts. Targeted lint and formatting checks passed; lint reports existing warnings in the large surrounding files.
  • Real web client in T3's desktop Browser panel, macOS, with isolated .t3 state and a synthetic Git repository: reproduced the immediate fork on the baseline, then checked cancel, current checkout, new worktree, and both choices when re-forking inherited history in an existing worktree. Git and persisted thread bindings confirmed separate/reused checkout paths, an unchanged source, and zero provider runs in each fork.

The reference is the reporter's Codex desktop screenshots; direct ChatGPT app access was unavailable to the computer-use tool. Native mobile execution and relay/tunnel connections were not exercised. Mobile shares the choice builder and destination command, and was typechecked.

📝 Walkthrough

Thread forking now supports selecting the current checkout or a new worktree. Launch contracts carry fork source and workspace details. The server prepares worktree forks and checks readiness before message dispatch. Web, mobile, and MCP paths use workspace-aware fork behavior.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a3751

Workspace-aware forks retain the intended checkout choices and readiness behavior. The inspected launch and client-state paths reveal no outstanding issue that should block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a3751

The new readiness check does not distinguish preparation-owned completion from an ordinary client mutation. A client already permitted to operate threads could therefore undermine the guarantee that checkout preparation finishes before further work is admitted. Existing authentication and project checks limit exposure; no additional host privilege or unauthenticated access was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new fork readiness decision is not bound to its preparation owner. Preparation emits an ordinary thread.metadata.update using launchCommandId:fork-ready, while the public command interface accepts that same command kind and client-selected ID. An accepted same-target metadata receipt can therefore satisfy the readiness predicate without proving checkout or synchronous setup completion. This weakens the failure-containment boundary around forked work. The inferred attack requires existing orchestration-operate authority; end-to-end premature provider execution was not reproduced.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified readiness manipulation requires an authenticated session with orchestration-operate scope and targets pending forks in that server environment. It concerns preparation and dispatch integrity within existing thread authority, rather than a demonstrated expansion of host privileges or tenant access.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller that knows the launch command ID can submit a metadata update for the fork target using the expected fork-ready ID. Metadata acceptance produces the same kind of receipt used by preparation, and the new readiness predicate does not distinguish those producers. This establishes a control-provenance gap; premature provider execution and resulting workspace effects remain unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The shared launch service requires the fork source to belong to the selected project. MCP existing destinations must resolve to a Git worktree registered under that project. The ready gate also checks target-thread identity, preventing a different thread's accepted receipt from satisfying it.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Synchronous setup must complete successfully before normal fork readiness is emitted. Asynchronous setup intentionally continues after launch readiness. Cancellation cleanup attempts worktree removal before clearing its binding, preserving ownership information if removal fails.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Represent readiness as a preparation-owned durable transition bound to the launch, target, and prepared workspace. Prevent public command producers from minting that transition; an accepted generic client-command receipt should not serve as its authority.

LoaderCircleIcon renders without animate-spin. While a fork is pending, the selected choice shows a static circle. The user then cannot tell that the request is still in progress. The worktree path can take a long time, so this matters there.

Addressed in 55eb69315ab8de5c89dbb8d778e432f4f6c76190 using the existing Spinner component. It animates the pending choice while visible, pauses when hidden, and respects reduced-motion preferences. Existing visible-animation tests, targeted lint, and formatting pass. The scoped web typecheck reports the same missing react-test-renderer errors reproduced on a clean upstream main checkout at e2cc34f1e; the updated dialog adds no typecheck errors.

@voltcrash Thanks for the fix. Using the existing Spinner addresses the static pending icon and preserves reduced-motion support. The reported typecheck errors are separate from this change.

During that time the user can leave the fork screen and open another thread or screen. A late failure then moves the user back to the source thread from that other screen.

The web flow in ChatView.tsx (lines 5866-5876) navigates back only if the current pathname is still the fork route. Apply the same check here. Read the focused route and navigate only if its threadId is targetThreadId.

Addressed in 55eb69315ab8de5c89dbb8d778e432f4f6c76190. A failed early-opened fork returns to its source only while the currently focused route is Thread with that fork's thread ID and environment ID. Leaving for another thread, screen, or environment preserves the current navigation. Scoped mobile typecheck and the existing navigation/worktree setup tests pass.

@voltcrash The updated guard addresses this finding. It returns to the source thread only when the focused Thread route matches both the failed fork’s thread ID and environment ID. Other navigation remains unchanged.

Keep fork preparation active until setup reaches a terminal state.

ThreadLaunchService explicitly gives forks no preparing run, so sendQueuesBehindSetup does not protect this path. If pendingResult.finally(...) clears forkWorkspacePreparingAtom before the first setup snapshot arrives, the composer enables submission. onSend can then enter the normal dispatch path and call startThreadTurn while asynchronous setup still runs.

Clear the atom from the setup stream’s terminal snapshot, not from launch-request settlement.

@coderabbitai I checked the outside-diff finding on 18c07f5. I am leaving the request-settlement cleanup in place because the proposed terminal-snapshot wait would override the existing setup wait preference.

A successful fork response is already the checkout-readiness boundary: launch awaits preparation before recording :fork-ready. async: false awaits script completion; async: true intentionally lets the script continue after preparation returns. This distinction is also documented in the unchanged PR description.

If the first setup snapshot arrives after a successful response, the checkout is therefore already bound and any blocking script has completed. Starting a turn while an explicitly asynchronous script continues is allowed. Web/desktop and mobile use the same readiness boundary for their local preparation flags. Holding those flags until a terminal snapshot would force asynchronous scripts to block work.

Validation: vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts -t "waits for a fork's setup|honors nonblocking setup" — 2 passed. The blocking regression checks that neither the result nor the readiness receipt exists before completion; the asynchronous regression checks the bound checkout and accepted readiness receipt while setup is still running. Please reassess this finding against that intended behavior.

@voltcrash You are correct. I withdraw the outside-diff finding.

I checked 18c07f5 and the two regression tests. launch awaits fork preparation before recording :fork-ready. With async: false, preparation waits for script completion. With async: true, the checkout is bound before the response, but the script can continue.

The tests cover both readiness boundaries. I inspected the assertions; I did not rerun the tests.

My proposed terminal-snapshot wait would override the setup wait preference. Clearing the local preparation flag when the request settles does not establish the race I reported. No change is needed for this finding.

Thanks for clarifying the intended behavior.

  • fix(server): hold fork sends until workspace readiness78619e3
Synced from GitHub

@coderabbitai The updated summary's cross-client readiness concern is valid and is addressed in 78619e3cea7d1f5acd57177c721372f1ddf2105b.

A new-worktree fork now persists its preparation command ID atomically with thread creation. The orchestrator rejects message.dispatch until that thread has an accepted :fork-ready receipt. This protects every sender through the shared server command path, including another client, MCP, and scheduled work. The guard does not depend on a local atom or progress subscription. Forking again clears the source fork's readiness command so it cannot become the new fork's authority.

The earlier response about request settlement still applies to the initiating client's timing: the successful response already waits for checkout and any blocking setup. This fix covers the separate interval before that response, when another sender can see the fork shell. It preserves async: true: once the checkout is ready and the background script has started, a message can start while that script continues. Failed blocking setup never records readiness and remains blocked.

Validation: 154 tests passed across ThreadLaunchService.test.ts, ThreadForkService.test.ts, ThreadFork.execution.test.ts, and packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.test.ts. Deferred-based regressions hold checkout or blocking setup open and submit an independent message; both tests fail without the guard because the premature message is accepted. With the guard, no run, checkpoint scope, or provider effect is created, and a subsequent send starts in the prepared worktree. The asynchronous regression also starts a real durable run while the setup snapshot is still running. Server and contracts typechecks, targeted lint (existing warnings only), and formatting pass.

The PR title and description are unchanged.

@voltcrash Thanks for the clarification. I checked 78619e3 and consider the cross-client readiness concern addressed.

The implementation now:

  • Includes workspacePreparationCommandId in the fork creation command.
  • Rejects message.dispatch unless the corresponding :fork-ready receipt is accepted and belongs to the target thread.
  • Prevents a new fork from inheriting the source fork’s preparation command ID.

The regression assertions cover independent sends during checkout and blocking setup. They check that rejected sends create no run, checkpoint scope, or provider effect. They also check that a later send uses the prepared worktree. The asynchronous regression checks that a run can start while the setup snapshot remains running.

This fixes the interval before the initiating request returns. It does not change the earlier conclusion: request-settlement cleanup remains correct, and asynchronous setup must not require a terminal snapshot.

I inspected the code and assertions. I did not rerun the reported 154 tests.

i know that this exceeds the 500-line requirement set for external contributors, but I really want this feature added in T3 Code as it benefits everyone

Wrap the fork dialog handlers with useStableCallback.

onForkWorkspaceSelected and the inline onClose arrow are passed as props to ForkThreadDialog. Both get a new identity on every ChatView render. ChatView renders on every streamed event. Elsewhere in this component, every handler that is passed as a prop is wrapped (onForkFromRunStable, onComposerSendStable, and others). The repository rule requires the same pattern here.

123-165: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Move the existing-worktree validation and fork-launch sequence into a service method.

The t3_thread_fork handler now performs several service operations:

  • It reads the project from ProjectService.
  • It validates the worktree with assertProjectWorktree, which uses GitVcsDriver and FileSystem.
  • It calls ThreadLaunchService.launch with the inherited source configuration.
  • It reads the event sequence for the target thread.

The web/WS launchThread path calls ThreadLaunchService.launch directly and does not run the existing_worktree membership check. MCP therefore enforces a fork rule that other entry points do not. A method such as ThreadLaunchService.forkThread (or an equivalent method on the existing fork service) can own the worktree validation and source-configuration inheritance. The handler then only decodes the input, calls that method, and maps its typed errors. This change also removes the four new tool dependencies from ThreadForkTool.

As per coding guidelines: "A transport handler does three things: decode the request, call one service method, and map the service's typed errors to the transport's error. Nothing else."

Clear forkSource when the fork starts.

ThreadRouteView reuses the unkeyed ChatView instance when the thread route changes. A new-worktree fork navigates after waitForThreadShell resolves, before pendingResult settles. The source selection therefore remains in forkSource while the target thread is open. Returning to the source remounts ForkThreadDialog, which resets its local busy state and allows a second fork.

7Clear forkSource at the start of onForkWorkspaceSelected, after validating the
8active thread and source selection and before starting the fork, so the source

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @voltcrash

Valid. Fixed in a375134: ChatView now clears forkSource as soon as the route leaves the thread that opened it, so returning to the source cannot remount an idle dialog while a fork is pending. I kept the dialog open until the fork navigates rather than clearing it at the start, so the "Preparing worktree…" state stays visible in the meantime.

@voltcrash The supplied code clears forkSource when its threadKey differs from routeThreadKey. This prevents the dialog from reopening on return while preserving “Preparing worktree…” until navigation. That addresses the finding without clearing the dialog at fork start.

  • fix(web): a pending fork's dialog stays closed after leaving its threada375134

Re the t3_thread_fork nitpick (move worktree validation into a service method): not taking this one. The handler matches t3_thread_launch in mcp/toolkits/project/handlers.ts, which runs the same assertProjectWorktree check in the MCP layer before calling ThreadMessageIntake.launchThread. That check exists because agents can supply any worktreePath. Web and mobile clients only offer the thread's own checkout or a new worktree. Moving it into ThreadLaunchService would put fork-only and MCP-only rules into the shared launch path and bring back the extra service method this change removed. All fork behavior, including replay, readiness gating and source pinning, stays in ThreadLaunchService.launch.
