Change account could reuse Antigravity’s saved Google token and skip Google sign-in. Browser authentication now stops the instance’s sessions and owned processes, hides that token before native startup, and settles credentials after the native runtime closes.

A focused credential service owns isolation and recovery. Cancellation or failure before Google saves a new token restores the previous account; a newly saved token wins even if later authentication/model discovery fails. Recovery atomically installs the backup without replacing a concurrent writer. Sign out retires obsolete backups and reports cleanup failures. Cancellation stays nonterminal until runtime and credential cleanup finish; a restoration failure reports failed sign-in and retains the recoverable backup. API-key and other non-browser methods keep their existing behavior.

Continues @kharitonov-egor’s work in #21085, preserving contributor history and merging main. The takeover replaces the free filesystem effects with the owning service, fixes the recovery race, and updates both account-switch instructions.

Verification on 77e0962918, Linux x64, Node 24.21.0:

  • Auth/support tests: original 59 β†’ rebuilt 63, preserving all 52 baseline cases. The startup cases fail with the main controller; concurrent-write recovery fails with the original PR; disabling backup retirement makes both sign-out regressions fail. A cancellation restore failure was red before the review fix and now reports failed through both the return value and subscription; its Deferred gate also proves admission stays closed during cleanup.
  • 144 focused tests passed across Auth, support, Driver, Provider, ACP support and Antigravity adapter suites. Targeted lint/formatting, server typecheck and server export checks passed.
  • Running web app with the real pinned Antigravity ACP 1.3.0 Linux runtime (verified release checksum), isolated profile and synthetic saved token: sign-in exposes a fresh Google OAuth link while the old token is absent, Cancel closes the native process and restores the original token byte for byte, the retry/cancel path succeeds. The final head was also cancelled during startup before a link appeared, restoring the token correctly. Sanitized filesystem/process proof.
  • This uses the shared Sign in / Change account backend flow, but the UI showed Sign in because no real Google account was authenticated. Completing Google authentication, switching between real accounts, native logout against Google, Windows/macOS filesystem behavior, iOS, Android and Electron desktop were not verified. Controller/service tests cover successful replacement and logout cleanup. Atomic writes by the native token writer were not verified. Unsupported hard-link restoration retains the backup and reports failure. A persistent startup recovery error makes the instance unavailable until filesystem access is repaired and the instance recreated (settings change or server restart); native Windows filesystem verification remains a human check.
  • Screenshot font loading required a local verification font in this headless environment; no product styles were changed.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

The change adds credential backup and recovery for browser-based Antigravity sign-in. It updates sign-in, cancellation, and sign-out handling to coordinate credential cleanup, adds tests for these flows, and revises the account-change guidance.

Changes: Antigravity credential handling

Layer / File(s)Summary
Credential set-aside and restoration
apps/server/src/provider/AntigravityCredentials.ts, apps/server/src/provider/antigravityAuthSupport.test.ts
The new credentials service backs up, recovers, and discards token files. Tests cover recovery outcomes, cleanup failures, and concurrent token writes.
Sign-in and sign-out lifecycle
apps/server/src/provider/AntigravityAuth.ts, apps/server/src/provider/AntigravityAuth.test.ts
The auth flow records sign-in results and waits for cleanup during cancellation and logout. Tests cover account changes, restoration and sign-out failures, and non-browser authentication.
Driver integration and account guidance
apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/AntigravityDriver.ts, docs/user/providers-antigravity.md
The driver recovers credentials for browser authentication, wraps fresh sign-in, and discards backups on sign-out. The guide describes account changes and cancellation outcomes.

Merge Risk: βšͺ Minimal Β· up to 77e09

Changing an Antigravity Google account now sets the saved token aside so Google sign-in opens again. Cancelling before a new sign-in is saved restores the previous account. If a new token appears during restoration, it is kept rather than overwritten. Both account-change instructions in the guide now say to use Change account. No outstanding issue blocks merging; Windows and macOS filesystem behavior has not been checked.

Security architecture risk: πŸ”΅ Low Β· up to 77e09

The change preserves client ownership checks and waits for credential cleanup before reporting completion. No introduced security defect was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns external concurrent writers and platform-specific recovery behavior.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed β€” The inspected credential mutations target one provider-instance profile under the server state directory. Profile paths derive from the full SHA-256 hash of the instance ID, separating ordinary distinct instances, including case-only ID differences.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed β€” Caller-supplied callback URLs still pass validation against the pending authorization and instance. Completion requires the active flow, matching owner session, and unused callback; leaving the auth operation rejects further completion or cancellation admission.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred β€” The inspected registry-managed path counters overlapping credential owners: settings reconciliation is sequential, replacements close the previous instance scope before construction, and auth finalization awaits its sign-in fiber. This supports ordinary single-owner operation but does not establish exclusion between separate server processes sharing storage.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed β€” If multiple server processes sharing a state directory are supported, define and enforce profile-scoped single-writer ownership across isolation, recovery, and backup retirement. This is a conditional hardening proposal, not an established reachable defect.

Make token restoration conditional on the destination remaining absent.

restoreAntigravityCredentials checks fs.exists(tokenPath) and then calls fs.rename(setAsidePath, tokenPath). The Antigravity runtime starts an eagerly authenticated child process. If the server crashes before its scope cleanup runs, that child can still write a new token before startup recovery completes. On POSIX, the rename can replace that token and silently restore the previous account.

Use a no-replace or conditional rename, or coordinate restoration with the token writer. Preserve the new token when tokenPath appears during recovery.

Fixed in 77e0962918. AntigravityCredentials.recover now uses a same-directory hard link for atomic no-replace installation, preserves AlreadyExists from a concurrent writer, then retires the backup. The actual-filesystem concurrent-writer regression fails on the original rename implementation and passes here. Cancellation restoration failures also remain visible through the controller instead of being lost during interruption.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the fix. The atomic no-replace installation and AlreadyExists handling address the token overwrite race. The reported concurrent-writer regression covers the failure case.

Put the credential lifecycle on a provider-domain service.

restoreAntigravityCredentials and setAsideAntigravityCredentials are exported filesystem capabilities, not methods or private internals of an existing service. The driver calls both effects directly. Move these two operations into the owning provider service, or add a focused Antigravity credential service if no existing service owns them. Update the tests to exercise that service. This does not require moving unrelated authentication or installation logic.

Rebuilt in 77e0962918 as the focused AntigravityCredentials Context.Service. Its layer takes only the immutable profile directory; FileSystem and Path are captured from the Effect environment. The former filesystem capability helpers were removed from antigravityAuthSupport.ts, and the driver invokes the owning service for startup recovery, fresh sign-in and sign-out backup retirement. Server typecheck and export checks pass.

@juliusmarminge, thanks for the update. The focused AntigravityCredentials service addresses this finding. It owns the credential lifecycle, captures FileSystem and Path from the Effect environment, and replaces the exported filesystem helpers.
