fix(gitlab): look up a pasted repository URL by its project path#20275
GitLab repository lookup encoded a pasted URL as the project ID, so Add Project failed while group/project worked. Lookup now extracts the project path, removes a matching configured web install root once, and preserves SSH namespaces. This addresses #7849.
The CLI still selects the server. Web results must match the pasted hostname, effective port, and repository path (ignoring case) before the client offers a clone. This prevents another port or installation on the same host from silently selecting a different repository. SSH transport ports remain separate from web ports. Bare project paths retain their existing behavior.
Maintainer takeover of #20275, building on @only21mil, @CyberStefNef, and @IzonIcy. Contributor commits are retained and main is merged. The rebuild replaces nested Effect dispatch with a linear service method and removes redundant historical test cases.
Verification on headless Linux:
- Original added coverage: eight executed cases across three definitions in one existing file. Final coverage: seven cases across three definitions; nine main tests preserved.
- Main with the first reduced suite: 9 pass / 6 fail. Original implementation: 14 pass / 1 wrong-port failure. First rebuild with the follow-up suite: 14 pass / 2 failures for wrong installation and scheme-less HTTP config. After the case follow-up (15 pass / 1 fail before the one-line comparison fix): all 166 GitLab tests across six suites pass.
- Targeted lint/format, scoped GitLab typecheck, and diff checks pass. Independent reviews found a wrong-install-root case, an HTTP configuration regression, and rejection of case-variant paths; all are fixed. Round three of independent whole-diff reviews returned no bugs from Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol. An optional stricter assertion was declined because the existing regression test already fails if path validation is removed.
- Running web app: full HTTPS URL, bare path, SCP, SSH port 2222, HTTP/HTTPS install-root inputs, and a mixed-case HTTPS project path reach the clone destination step. Wrong hostname, web port, and returned project path are rejected. This uses a fake
glabsubprocess with public GitLab project JSON and synthetic self-hosted responses. No clone was performed.
Test and integrated verification proof. Browser verification used the worktree's isolated state. The real-data snapshot could not migrate because the installed build's migration history differs from this checkout; no live database was changed.
Before the review fix: the pasted /other/team/app.git URL incorrectly offered /gitlab/other/team/app from the selected installation. This is the first rebuild, not main.
Before: wrong installation offered for cloning
After: the same input and fixture are rejected.
After: wrong installation rejected
Final full-URL success, including a mixed-case input resolved to the canonical project:
Full GitLab URL reaches the clone destination step
Not verified: a real authenticated glab, a real self-hosted GitLab, actual cloning, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, or Electron desktop. Separate SSH/web hostnames, canonical-path redirects, percent decoding, URL subpages, and the separate subfolder config key remain outside scope. Current head 88781118cd passed lint, build/typecheck, package tests and all eight server shards. Web CI failed twice on the unchanged WorkflowOpeningBlock syntax-highlighting assertion (8047 other web cases passed); CI run. This gate remains blocked. The configured CodeRabbit review request returned a service rate limit, so its older review does not cover this head. Independent current-code reviews are clear; a new configured-bot review remains outstanding. Human approval of the host/install-root semantics remains required before merging.
Tests: GPT-6 Astra (high); implementation: GPT-6.1 Sol (high); reviews: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol. Coordinated with GPT-6.1 Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

Approvability
Verdict: Approved at 0d9fea2
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable β This is a focused GitLab repository-lookup fix with limited runtime impact: pasted URLs are converted to project paths, install roots are handled, and mismatched hosts are rejected safely. The accompanying tests cover the new URL, install-root, and host-validation behavior.

Walkthrough
GitLab repository lookup now derives project paths from repository URLs, accounts for a matching configured install root, and checks whether the resolved host and path match the requested URL.

Merge Risk: External image Low Β· up to 8c4aa
Repository lookup is mergeable with a bounded caveat: a host-mismatch error may suggest a configuration command that does not resolve the problem. Correct the guidance and strengthen the install-root test when practical.
Security architecture risk: External image Low Β· up to 07c84
The lookup adds host, web-port and repository-path checks without letting a pasted URL select the authenticated GitLab server. No introduced security defect was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns real CLI configuration behavior and the existing trust placed in server-provided clone URLs.
Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
- inferred β The demonstrated PR-specific influence is repository selection within the existing CLI environment. Downstream cloning still uses the existing Git and SSH authority; the inspected change does not grant input control over CLI credential-host selection or add deployment privileges.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred β An inconsistent API response could pass web-identity checks while supplying a different SSH clone destination. However, the base already accepted that SSH field without independent identity validation, and the unchanged clone service already preferred it. This is an existing provider-trust assumption, not an established introduced or worsened attack path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed β Repository input remains encoded inside a single projects endpoint argument. The added rejection checks run after the API response but before clone URLs are released. Inspected tests explicitly expect host-mismatch errors for another hostname and another web port.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- inferred β For parsed web URLs, failure to obtain usable install-root configuration can cause lookup failure, but it does not remove the final returned host and path checks. The fallback therefore preserves the inspected identity gate rather than silently accepting a different returned web path.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch pull-request-07. I will keep this PR and contributor history, merge current main, reduce the tests to focused behavior coverage, and rebuild the pasted-URL lookup with server-port validation. Independent tests and adversarial reviews will run before publication; no merge is planned.

@coderabbitai review
Maintainer takeover is now at 88781118cd. The original commits are preserved and main was merged. Independent whole-PR reviews by Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol returned no bugs in round three. The body contains current test and integrated web proof, including effective web ports, wrong install roots, and canonical path casing.
The initial CI run passed lint, build/typecheck, package tests, and all eight server shards. The sole failure was the unchanged WorkflowOpeningBlock browser syntax-highlighting assertion, alongside a worker initialization timeout. Failed jobs have been rerun once. No merge is planned.
