fix(mobile): a queued message that runs while being edited no longer returns to the composer#19927

When a queued message starts while its unchanged text is open for editing on mobile, the sent text returns to the composer as though it were unsent. Mobile now drops an untouched edit silently, matching web. Changed edits keep the existing recovery behavior: recover into an empty thread draft, otherwise preserve the occupied draft and discard the edit.

Maintainer takeover of @tris203's #19927. Merged main, retained the small recovery helper, shortened its comment, and replaced the stale-run test with successful changed-edit recovery. The original commits remain.

Verification: 8 tests before β†’ 8 after in queued-run-edit.test.ts. Removing only the clean guard fails the duplicate-text regression (1 failed, 7 passed); the restored implementation passes all 8. Tests hydrate composer state and drain pending merges/writes before inspecting recovered content. Mobile typecheck, scoped lint and formatting pass.

The asynchronous changed-edit merge and cleanup ordering already exists on main. This fix preserves it; failed draft hydration remains a separate known limitation.

Verification gate: current native UI proof is unavailable: the Device tool reports β€œAgent device access is turned off for this environment.” No iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, or Electron desktop verification was performed here. The author's earlier Android evidence applies to the original revision and is not current-head proof. A human should verify unchanged-edit closure, changed-edit recovery and occupied-draft preservation on a native client before marking this ready.

One parallel adversarial review round (Claude Opus 5.5 and Codex GPT-6-Sol) found no blocking code issues. The existing CodeRabbit async-merge concern was checked against main and answered; its review thread is resolved with the source-backed explanation above.

Maintainer implementation: Codex GPT-6.1-Sol; tests: Codex GPT-6-Astra; reviews: Claude Opus 5.5 and Codex GPT-6-Sol, through T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at ea5e01b

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable β€” This is a focused mobile bug fix that prevents untouched queued edits from reappearing in the composer while preserving existing recovery behavior for changed edits. The production scope is small and supported by targeted unit tests, with no schema, configuration, deployment, security, or billing impact.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

The change adds recoverQueuedRunEdit to handle edits whose queued run is no longer queued. The function returns a recovery status and updates the thread draft when eligible. Composer state uses the result to set an error message.

Changes: Queued edit recovery

Layer / File(s)Summary
Recover queued run edits
apps/mobile/src/state/queued-run-edit.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/queued-run-edit.test.ts
recoverQueuedRunEdit ends clean edits without restoring them. It keeps edit content when the edit text is nonblank and the thread draft has blank text and no attachments; otherwise, it discards the edit. Tests cover clean edits, occupied thread drafts, and mismatched run IDs.
Integrate recovery with composer state
apps/mobile/src/state/use-thread-composer-state.ts
When an edited run is no longer queued, composer state calls recoverQueuedRunEdit. It sets an error message for "kept" and "discarded" results.

Before / after behavior

  • observed β€” Modified behavior in apps/mobile/src/state/queued-run-edit.test.ts: The test imports add queued-edit lifecycle functions and composer-draft snapshot/text helpers.
  • observed β€” Modified behavior in apps/mobile/src/state/queued-run-edit.test.ts: Recovery tests cover untouched edits, changed edits when the thread draft already contains text, and mismatched run IDs. Their expectations distinguish "clean", "discarded", and null, and check draft contents and whether the queued edit remains available.
  • observed β€” Modified behavior in apps/mobile/src/state/queued-run-edit.ts: Imports getComposerDraftSnapshot and mergeComposerDraftContent for draft recovery.
  • observed β€” Modified behavior in apps/mobile/src/state/queued-run-edit.ts: Adds recoverQueuedRunEdit, which returns null when no edit matches runId. It ends an unchanged edit and returns "clean". For a changed edit, it merges the edit draft into the thread draft only when the edit text is nonblank after trimming and the thread draft has blank text and no attachments; it then defers attachment cleanup and returns "kept". Otherwise, it ends the edit without deferred cleanup and returns "discarded".

Await the draft merge before clearing the edit.

recoverQueuedRunEdit clears the queued-edit draft before mergeComposerDraftContent finishes. If loadPersistedComposerState() rejects, the merge stops at await loadPromise and never publishes the thread draft. The edit has already been deleted, and the caller reports "kept" as a successful recovery.

Make recovery asynchronous. Await the merge before endQueuedRunEdit, and leave the edit active when the merge rejects. The persistence-only path keeps the merged draft in memory because the atom is updated before the persistence await, but it still must not report durable recovery before that write completes.

Not changing this here. The "kept" path is unchanged from main: the effect in use-thread-composer-state.ts already ran void mergeComposerDraftContent(...) and then endQueuedRunEdit(...), and this PR moves that code without changing its behavior. This PR only changes the untouched-edit case, which never merges.

The failure also needs draft hydration to reject at the moment the run leaves the queue. By then the composer has been showing drafts from that same store, so hydration has almost always finished. Making recovery async would also open a window where the effect re-runs while the merge is in flight, which needs its own guard. If it's worth hardening, it belongs in a separate PR.

Confirmed during maintainer takeover: the changed-edit path on current main already calls the merge without awaiting it, then clears the edit. This PR preserves that ordering and changes only untouched edits, which never merge. The new recovery tests now await successful hydration and drain queued writes, and verify the actual recovered text and occupied-draft protection. Failed hydration remains a real, pre-existing hardening concern; introducing an async effect lifecycle is outside this focused duplicate-message fix.

Seems like the humans are having a chat. I'll hop back into my burrow for now. If you need me again, just tag @coderabbitai in a new comment, and I'll come hopping out!

Note

Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of @tris203

@juliusmarminge thanks for taking this over. You're right that it no longer reproduces on main. #25468 added the same rule there: an unchanged queued edit closes silently when its run starts. #24832 moved Steer/Send now out of the row you tap to edit, which is probably how the editor got opened in the steer flow I originally hit. Neither is on this branch, so I'm closing this as superseded by #25468.

Retest on main at 570d4b03eef, Android emulator (Pixel 9, Android 17), dev client rebuilt for that revision, isolated dev server with empty state, Codex, follow-ups set to Queue:

  1. Queue a message, then tap Send now in the queue sheet: it steers the turn and the composer stays empty.
  2. Open the queued message for editing, leave it unchanged, and let the turn finish: the edit closes, the composer is empty and there's no banner. This was the original bug.
  3. Change the edit with an empty composer: the changed text comes back with "That message already started. Your edit is back in the composer."
  4. Type a draft first, then change the edit: the draft is kept and the edit is discarded with "That message already started, so the edit was discarded."
