Hiding a revealed account email immediately replaced it with the scrambled placeholder while blur was still near zero, briefly showing readable random text.

Keep the real text during the existing blur transition, then swap the placeholder when the filter completes. An effect-scoped 400ms fallback handles suppressed or canceled transitions and cleans up on reveal, completion and unmount, preventing an earlier hide from finishing a later one.

Validation:

  • Existing ProviderInstanceCard browser suite: 3 → 4 tests. Both redaction regressions fail on main; all four pass after the fix. Tests cover partial blur, native completion, theme-suppressed transitions, rapid hide/reveal/hide and canceled completion.
  • Scoped lint, formatting, web typecheck and diff checks pass.
  • Real Provider Settings in Linux Chromium: repeated natural 150ms hide/reveal cycles retain the email through partial blur and substitute the placeholder only at full blur. Theme transitions disabled: fallback completes hiding.
  • The browser received a temporary developer@example.com fixture through its existing config atom. No real account or server credentials were changed.
  • Shared component covers provider/source-control Settings, Codex setup, Usage and composer account labels. Web and desktop share it; native Electron, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android were not run. Mobile uses separate UI.

Before — readable placeholder flashes during hiding:

Before: placeholder is visible before blur

After — real text blurs before substitution:

After: real text remains during partial blur

These are crops from the actual recordings at the start of hiding, with the same fixture and viewport. No transition timing was overridden.

Thanks @DominikScholz for the original #19010. Contributor history is preserved with current main merged. The rebuild replaces manual timer bookkeeping with scoped effect cleanup and leaves the placeholder helper unchanged.

Walkthrough

RedactedSensitiveText now tracks hidden, hiding, and revealed states. During hiding, the real value remains visible until the filter transition ends or a 400 ms timeout completes. The redacted placeholder appears only when the value is hidden.

The component tracks hidden, hiding, and revealed states. Clicking switches between revealed and hiding. A filter transition end or 400 ms timeout changes hiding to hidden. The placeholder appears only when hidden.

Priority: External image Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~8 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: External image Low · up to 6ceeb

Hiding a revealed email now fades out before the placeholder appears. A custom transition longer than 400 ms could show the placeholder slightly early. This is a small visual issue and is safe to merge with owner awareness.

Security architecture risk: External image Minimal · up to 6ceeb

The change preserves the existing reveal interaction and does not grant access to additional data or privileges. Hiding now blurs the displayed value before replacing it, with a fallback when the transition does not complete. No material security regression was identified.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is sensitive text displayed by existing client-side consumers, including provider account email. Visibility state and timers belong to individual component instances; the inspected change does not expand tenant, environment or service authority. The supplied dependency mapping does not establish an exhaustive consumer count.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Blur and placeholder substitution are visual privacy controls, not an authorization boundary. Before this PR, the component already received the real value and allowed it to be revealed locally. The change adds no new recipient, executable interpretation of the value or privileged action.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The state guard makes repeated completion harmless while hidden or revealed, and each click cancels the stored timeout. Missing transition events have a scheduled fallback. Pending timers are not cleared on unmount, but their callbacks target only the removed instance's local state; no cross-instance mutation or security-relevant failure propagation was identified.

Add a fallback when the hide transition does not finish.

hiding changes to hidden only from the filter transitionend handler. During theme changes, the repository can set transition duration to zero, so the event may not fire. The component can then remain in hiding and render the real value instead of the placeholder. Add a timeout that changes hiding to hidden, and clear it when visibility changes or the component unmounts.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not let the fallback preempt a longer filter transition.

If a caller passes a className with a filter duration over 400 ms, this timer switches to hidden before filter completes. That replaces the real text with the placeholder mid-transition. Derive the fallback from the computed transition timing, or enforce a maximum duration below 400 ms.

No caller sets a transition duration: all eight pass only layout or typography classes (w-fit, max-w-full truncate, break-all, font sizing), and the button's own transition uses the 150 ms default. The timer is cleared as soon as the blur ends, so it only takes effect when transitionend never arrives. Keeping it as a fixed fallback rather than reading computed timing.

@DominikScholz Thanks for clarifying. With no caller overriding the 150 ms transition, the 400 ms fallback does not interrupt the blur. The effect clears the timer when transitionend changes the state to "hidden".

I withdraw this finding. Keeping the fixed fallback is reasonable.

5Learning: In apps/web/src/components/settings/RedactedSensitiveText.tsx, the fixed 400 ms timeout is intentionally a fallback for a missing filter transitionend event. The component uses the default 150 ms transition, and callers do not customize transition timing. Do not require computed transition timing solely because className could hypothetically override the duration.

🟡 Medium settings/RedactedSensitiveText.tsx:62

A stale 400 ms timeout can finish a later hide early, replacing the real value with the placeholder while its blur is still fading in and causing a flash during rapid toggles. The timeout from the first hide is never canceled or associated with that hide; cancel it when visibility changes or guard the callback with a hide-generation identifier.

No longer relevant as of 6ceeb682c4a20ecdb6ba2015dbc1cffd8544659b

Fixed in 6ceeb682c4: each click now clears the pending fallback timer, so a hide-reveal-hide within 400 ms no longer lets the first timer swap the placeholder in mid-blur. Checked in the app: the second hide now swaps at full blur after ~150 ms, and the suppressed-transition fallback still finishes at ~400 ms.

thanks @DominikScholz. keeping the real email until the filter finishes is the right fix, and the original history is preserved.

i merged current main into this branch and resolved its deleted-test conflict by retaining only the two redaction regressions. they now render the shared component through the current disposable helper and use its fake timers. production behavior keeps the original three visibility states and cleaned-up 400ms fallback. no unrelated provider-card tests were restored.

verification: both regressions failed on main before the fix. vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith, including format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks and browser tests. two independent reviews approved head c61c570544e2c8c9dc1bde532d92e17893454fc7 without findings. real provider settings in system chrome passed repeated reveal/hide, rapid reversal, suppressed-transition fallback, light/dark and 720/1280px checks. the browser's server-config subscription supplied developer@example.com; credentials were unchanged.

unverified: native electron, mobile and other operating systems. web and desktop share this component; mobile uses separate ui. screenshots hold the existing filter at 10ms for a matching comparison; recordings show natural repeated toggles at the existing 150ms duration. uploaded videos were played and seeked in chrome.

before: main substitutes a readable placeholder at the start of hiding

after: the email remains while blur starts

before: repeated reveal and hide flashes the placeholder

after: repeated reveal and hide blurs before substitution

all 10 reported checks are green and github reports no conflicts. macroscope still requires human approval for the shared concealment behavior and effect-budget suppression. coderabbit's current push review was rate-limited; the two independent final-head reviews above cover this pass. ready for maria's review, with that approval still outstanding.
