fix(web): context menus are keyboard and screen reader accessible#18876

The web fallback context menu opened from a thread row but left focus on the row, so keyboard users could not navigate or enter submenus. This rebuild of #18876, credited to @TonybynMp4, focuses the first enabled item and supports arrows, Home/End, nested menus, Enter/Space activation, Escape, and native Tab traversal.

The change is limited to the fallback menu and its tests. Menu roles, named submenus, radio checked state, and hidden decorative icons expose the interaction to accessibility APIs. Focus follows keyboard or pointer input, closed submenus release their highlight handlers, and a replacement menu restores the original invoker. Unrelated snooze detail styling and IPC changes were removed; snooze labels retain their existing text.

Verification:

  • Tests reduced from 24 to 20 across the fallback and Electron menu suites (web 15→12; desktop 9→8). All 16 main tests remain unchanged. The four retained regression cases fail against the pinned main implementation and pass on the rebuilt head.
  • Focused tests: 20/20. Scope lint/format and web typecheck pass; one unchanged fake-DOM lint warning remains.
  • Actual isolated Linux web client: Shift+F10, enabled-item movement/wrap, Home/End, Right/Left/Escape, Enter and Space on leaf items and submenu triggers, Tab/Shift+Tab traversal, focus restoration, pointer hover, and keyboard scrolling under a stationary pointer. Trusted browser events confirmed native activation. Radio roles/checked states and hidden decorative SVGs were inspected.
  • Native Electron, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, remote/relay/tunnel modes, and screen-reader audio were not exercised. The fallback is shared by web connection modes; mobile and Electron native menus are unchanged.
  • Independent whole-diff reviews: round 1 found a pointer handoff lag after keyboard use, reproduced and fixed; the existing lifecycle test now covers it without increasing test count. The initial visible focus highlight is an intentional accessibility choice. Round 2 with GPT-6-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 found no blockers. The baseline-only focus failure was reproduced before rebuilding; current-head focus and navigation pass. Current-head web CI, lint, server tests and Macroscope correctness passed. Build/typecheck is blocked by a new main-branch test at ThreadDetailsPrRows.browser.test.tsx:236 missing openInShortcutEnabled, introduced after the pinned base by 3dd9706; both that component and test are unchanged by this PR. Failed integration job. Coordinator must handle that main-branch failure and approval. Landing and approval are handled centrally; no watcher or merge is requested.

Before — main opens the menu but keeps focus on the row:

Before: keyboard menu has no focused item

After — Space opens the named Snooze submenu and focuses its first item:

After: keyboard focus in the Snooze submenu

Before keyboard recording · After keyboard recording

Tests: GPT-6-Astra; implementation: GPT-6.1-Sol; reviews: GPT-6-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5; integration and proof: GPT-6.1-Sol, through T3 Code (Codex/Claude harnesses).

Closed submenu buttons remain in highlightUpdaters, so each later keyboard or hover refresh updates every button from every submenu opened during the session, while their detached DOM trees stay retained. Unregister each closing menu’s highlight updater when removing its DOM node.

Walkthrough

The fallback context menu now coordinates keyboard navigation, submenu focus, pointer interactions, highlighting, and focus restoration. Tests cover menu navigation, dismissal, submenu selection, pointer transitions, and replacing an open menu.

Changes: Fallback context menu behavior

Layer / File(s)Summary
Menu setup and pointer behavior

Menu labels and item data are updated. Pointer movement and keyboard-driven navigation coordinate focus, submenu behavior, and highlighting. Cleanup removes listeners and highlight state.
Keyboard navigation and submenu focus
apps/web/src/contextMenuFallback.ts
Keyboard input navigates enabled items, opens and closes submenu levels, and restores focus when a submenu closes. Initial focus selects the first enabled action.
Navigation and focus tests

Possibly related issues

  • pingdotgg/t3code#26562: The issue reports keyboard and screen-reader problems for thread actions. This change updates fallback context-menu focus and keyboard behavior, but does not change sidebar tree semantics.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#10390: The issue reports that a context menu does not move screen-reader focus to its options. This change adds focus to the first enabled item and menu semantics in the web fallback.

WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices menu or menubar keyboard interaction Tab Shift+Tab context menu

💡 Result:

1In the WAI-ARIA APG **Menu and Menubar Pattern**:
2
3- **Tab / Shift+Tab do not move between menu items**; arrow keys handle navigation within the menu.
4- From a focused item in a menu or menubar, **Tab or Shift+Tab moves focus out and closes open menus and submenus**.
5- These keys **do not move focus into a popup menu**. When a menu opens—including a context menu—the author must place focus on an item inside it. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/WAI/ARIA/apg/patterns/menubar/?utm_source=openai))

Allow Tab traversal after dismissing the menu.

When Tab or Shift+Tab closes a focused fallback menu, cleanup(null) restores focus to the invoker. The shared event.preventDefault() then cancels traversal, so the user must press Tab again to reach the next or previous page control.

Return from this branch after cleanup. This preserves intentional focus restoration while allowing browser traversal.

Replacing an open fallback menu leaves focus on the new menu when the old menu is dismissed, so the new menu later cannot restore focus to the original invoker: its captured restoration target was a button removed with the old menu. Dismiss the previous menu before capturing previouslyFocusedElement and opening the replacement.

Add a keyboard test that presses Enter and Space on focused menu items.

The keyboard tests press only arrow keys, Home, End, Tab, and Escape. No test presses Enter or Space. A regression that stops Enter or Space from selecting a leaf item or opening a submenu would not fail this suite. The PR states Enter and Space activation as a goal.

The pressKey helper dispatches a keydown event on document. It does not simulate the native click that a focused <button> produces on Enter or Space. A test that presses Enter needs that step to model browser activation.

Suggested fix

Model native button activation in the helper. Set cancelable so that defaultPrevented reflects the handler's choice.
